A few weeks after Walter Salles’s “I’m Still Here” made history as the first-ever Brazilian film to win an Oscar, the country continues its great momentum with “Raul Seixas: Let Me Sing,” the first Brazilian series to ever play France’s Series Mania, the largest TV event in Europe. Like Salles’s film, the project is an original production of Globoplay, the freemium streaming service of Brazilian media giant Globo, and tells the story of one of Brazil’s greatest music stars, Raul Seixas.
The eight-episode series will have its world premiere in the International Panorama Competition, where it will run for best series, director, actor, actress, and the Student Award. “Raul Seixas: Let Me Sing: is created by Paulo Morelli (“City of Men”), who co-directs with his son, Pedro Morelli (“Brotherhood”), under banner O2 Filmes, where Paulo Morelli partners with Andrea Barata Ribeiro and Fernando Mereilles.

U.K.-based Blue Finch Films has acquired worldwide rights to the supernatural horror film “A Mother’s Embrace” from director Cristian Ponce.
Set in 1996, the story follows Ana, a young firefighter responding to an emergency at a retirement home during Rio de Janeiro’s worst storm. As her team attempts to evacuate the elderly residents, Ana uncovers sinister undercurrents and must confront her own past trauma to escape.
The film marks Ponce’s second feature, following “History of the Occult,” which won awards at Mar del Plata. He co-wrote the screenplay with Gabriela Capello and André Pereira. Pereira and Mariana Muniz produced through their Lupa Filmes banner.
Brazilian actor Marjorie Estiano, known for her International Emmy-nominated role in Globo’s “Under Pressure” and Locarno winner “Good Manners,” stars alongside Chandelly Braz and Javier Drolas.
Ponce said: “For me, the idea of evil based on the presumption of good was very important.

A few years ago, I had the chance to visit the set of the Brazilian horror film The Trace We Leave Behind (a.k.a. O Rastro), which didn’t quite get the big international release it was originally supposed to, but did turn out to be a cool movie. You can read my review at This Link. The Trace We Leave Behind turned out so well, I’m very glad to hear that producer André Pereira has made a new horror film, this time teaming up with History of the Occult director Cristian Ponce for A Mother’s Embrace.
Variety got their hands on a couple first-look images from A Mother’s Embrace, and those can be seen at the bottom of this article.
Directed by Ponce from a script he wrote with Pereira and Gabriela Capello, this film is set in 1996, during one of the biggest storms to ever hit Rio de Janeiro.

Netflix has shared details on its next Brazilian original series, “O Cangaceiro do Futuro,” a comedy caper starring Edmilson Filho and Chandelly Braz which will hit the platform later this year.
Glaz, which previously collaborated with Netflix on “Get the Goat,” produces the series, which was created by Halder Gomes, a writer-director-producer who has worked many times with “O Cangaceiro do Futuro” lead Filho, achieving popular success in both theatrical features and TV.
Filming has already wrapped on the series, which shot in the rural town of Quixadá, in Ceará, Northeast Brazil, before wrapping in São Paulo. The show’s shoot and incorporation of talent such as Gomes, from Caerá capital Fortaleza, are examples of Netflix’s “goal to expand to all regions of Brazil,” as Elisabetta Zenatti, VP, Brazilian Content, announced last November.
The series turns on Virguley (Filho), a jack-of-all-trades-master-of-none who is struggling to make ends meet in the big city,...
