Cecilia Kang’s fiction debut “Elder Son” (“Hijo mayor”) has been picked up by Buenos Aires-based sales company Meikincine. The film, which debuts its trailer here, will be heading to Locarno in August, set to premiere in the Filmmakers of the Present section.

The Argentinian drama – co-produced with France – portrays the migration journey of a Korean family to Argentina in search of a better life “as they find ways to mourn what has been lost along the way.”

The story sees Lila, a young Korean-Argentinian girl, navigating the contradictions of her identity and trying to find her place in the world. Her father, Antonio, arrived in Latin America 18 years earlier, deciding to bet everything on the promise of a young immigrant’s dream.

The Locarno Film Festival (August 6-16) has unveiled the line-up for the 2025 edition, with world premieres including Radu Jude’s Dracula.

Romanian filmmaker and Berlinale Golden Bear winner Jude’s Romania-Austria-Luxembourg co-production, which competes in the international competition, is a comedy drama shot and set in Transylvania that explores the legend of Dracula through multiple lenses. Luxbox represents sales. Jude returns to Locarno after two films played out of competition last year – Eight Postcards From Utopia, co-directed with Christian Ferencz-Flatz, and Sleep #2.

HBO has picked up “Doomsday Machine,” the upcoming series starring Claire Foy as Facebook’s chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg. The series is adapted from Sheera Frenkel and Cecilia Kang’s New York Times bestselling book “An Ugly Truth: Inside Facebook’s Battle for Domination.”

“Doomsday Machine” chronicles the political and social minefields Facebook has navigated on its relentless quest for growth. The series examines how Sandberg and Mark Zuckerberg’s work are shaping the way that billions of people around the world communicate and consume information.

The series is created by Ayad Akhtar and hails from Anonymous Content and Wiip. Executive producers include Foy, Akhtar, Wiip’s Paul Lee and Josh Stern, Anonymous’ David Levine and Doug Wald, Adam Berkowitz, Elyse Cheney and Adam Eaglin. Andrew Marantz of the New Yorker is also a consultant on the project.

HBO has closed a deal for Doomsday Machine, a limited series about Facebook starring Emmy winner Claire Foy as embattled tech giant COO Sheryl Sandberg and executive producing as well. Paraguayan director Paz Encina, whose striking ecological fable and tale of the pain of exile, “Eami,” won the Tiger Award at this year’s Rotterdam Film Festival, is developing a slate of feature film projects, Variety can reveal.

The first project, “Sy,” follows the titular character – whose name means “mother” in the Guarani language – after she receives the news that she’ll give birth to a savior who will also be the son of her god. “In this project I would like to work on a woman’s dichotomy between motherhood and faith,” said Encina.

The second film, “El Único Tiempo,” tells the story of an elderly couple living in exile, where they await news of the son who disappeared during Paraguay’s military dictatorship. When their cat mysteriously vanishes one day, their search for it brings them closer to the life they couldn’t share with their missing son.

A buzzy TV series based on the book “An Ugly Truth: Inside Facebook’s Battle for Domination” is currently in the works — but the social media giant is now warning the production company behind the project for “recklessly” proceeding with development of a “false and defamatory” adaptation.

In a legal letter sent on Monday, high-powered attorney Mathew Rosengart, who is repping Facebook, puts Anonymous Content on notice with an email addressed to CEO Dawn Olmstead.

“Facebook obviously recognizes that it is a public figure and has great respect for the First Amendment and the right of journalists and film or television producers to publish stories about it,” the letter, obtained by Variety, reads, in part. “The First Amendment does not protect knowingly false statements or portrayals — or those made with reckless disregard for the truth — even about public figures.”

Facebook may be pelted of late by revelations from whistleblowers and damning internal documents made public, but the Mark Zuckerberg co-founded social media giant has decided to draw the line when it comes to the upcoming Doomsday Machine TV series.
