Mbc Group, Image Nation partner on Hwjn feature, series

Middle East-based companies O3 Productions (part of Mbc Group) and Image Nation are partnering on a series of adaptations of Ibraheem Abbas’ novel Hwjn.

The two companies will co-produce and co-finance an Arabic-language feature film, a TV spin-off title The Delusionists, and are plotting two further TV series based on the novel, details of which will be announced at a later date.

“American Honey” took the top prize at the 2016 British Independent Film Awards, which was held on Sunday at London’s Old Billingsgate.

“American Honey” was named Best British Independent Film, and also scored three additional awards (including Best Director for Andrea Arnold). Barry Jenkins’ “Moonlight” was the night’s only non-uk winner, picking up honors for Best International Independent Film.

The 19th annual Bifa ceremony, hosted by Jennifer Saunders, also presented Clare Binns with the Special Jury Prize for her “unstinting efforts in bringing independent film to new audiences.”

Naomie Harris was also presented the Variety Award by Danny Boyle, in recognition of the global impact she made this year in helping to focus the international film spotlight on the UK.

Update: Andrea Arnold’s American Honey scooped four prizes at the British Independent Film Awards tonight in London. Those include the top nod for Best British Independent Film as well as Best Director for Arnold, Best Actress for breakout Sasha Lane and the Outstanding Craft prize for Robbie Ryan’s cinematography.

A road movie about law-breaking teenagers chasing the American Dream, American Honey co-stars Shia Labeouf. The pic was shot in the U.S. Midwest and won huzzahs in Cannes where it debuted last May, taking the Jury Prize. That set a trifecta for Arnold who had previously won that honor with Red Road and Fish Tank. A24 took Stateside rights and Focus acquired key international territories during the festival.

The film will be screened in 25 Vue, Odeon and Everyman cinemas across the UK on December 11, as the first in the BIFA Independents screening series supported by the BFI.

Ken Loach’s I, Daniel Blake leads this year’s British Independent Film Awards (Bifa) nominations, which were announced this morning by British actors Ophelia Lovibond and Douglas Booth in London.

Loach’s timely social drama - which won Cannes’ Palme d’Or earlier this year - was nominated in seven categories including Best British Independent Film, Best Director and Best Screenplay.

Co-stars Hayley Squires and Dave Johns are each nominated twice – for Best Actress and Best Actor and will also go head to head in the Most Promising Newcomer category.

The other nominees in the Best British Independent Film category are American Honey (six nominations), Couple in a Hole (two nominations), Notes on Blindness (six nominations) and the Under The Shadow (six nominations).

Other titles with receiving multiple nominations but in other categories included Adult Life Skills (six nominations) and zombie...

For 96 minutes, here is Moazzam Begg, sitting in a mock-up interview room, describing how a lad from Birmingham wound up in Guantánamo Bay. Personal and political quickly interweave. Begg’s close-miked words, often battling against the sounds of the war machine, allow us to hear the hurt he felt in being persecuted by intelligence agencies, and in seeing his adopted home of Afghanistan obliterated after 9/11.

Documentary filmmakers will descend on Sheffield in the coming days to offer a window on the past, present and virtual future. Michael Rosser reports

The 23rd Sheffield Doc/Fest (June 10-15) kicks off today and promises to be one of its most eclectic to date, with its typically diverse line-up of documentaries from around the world complemented by big name speakers and a major showcase of virtual reality content.

Its 160 feature and short films will be bookended by opening film Where To Invade Next, from Oscar-winning Us director Michael Moore, and The Seasons In Quincy: Four Portraits Of John Berger. Moore and actress Tilda Swinton, a co-director on the latter doc, will both be in Sheffield to present their films.

Moore’s film and accompanying Q&A will also be live streamed to 120 cinemas across the UK through distributor Dogwoof – the second time Doc/Fest has done this, following Pulp: A Film About Life, Death & Supermarkets...

The UK premiere and Q&A will be live streamed to 114 cinemas across the UK through distributor Dogwoof. It marks the second time Doc/Fest has streamed its opening, following Pulp: A Film About Life, Death & Supermarkets in 2014.

There are a total of 27 world premieres, 15 international, 19 European and 52 UK premieres with documentaries from 49 countries including Mexico, Cuba, China and Peru.

The UK firm will raise around $310,000 (£200,000) in UK production finance for Microwave International: Shakespeare India; projects, teams, mentors announced.

Media investment firm Bob & Co is the latest company to invest in Film London’s mentoring and development scheme Microwave International: Shakespeare India.

Bob & Co will raise UK production finance for the project through an Enterprise Investment Scheme (Eis).

The scheme’s aim is to finance one feature with significant Asian and British Asian involvement with up to $780,000 (£500,000) and to theatrically release the film in 2016.

Andy Brunskill, of Bob & Co’s subsidiary Sums London, brokered the deal and will executive produce the selected feature.

Bob & Co will raise money through the Eis scheme, along with India’s Cinestaan Film Company, who partnered with Film London on the initiative in April.

The project will involve six teams of Asian writers, directors and producers from the UK and India honing ideas for Shakespeare-themed features in an intensive week-long microschool, which...
