Khan Noonien Singh, Star Trek's most iconic villain, continues to impact the Star Trek universe through his descendants, including Lt. LA'an Noonien-Singh. Khan's complex history is further explored in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, presenting a new perspective on his legacy and the struggles faced by his family. The genetic enhancements that made Khan powerful have mostly diminished in LA'an, who serves as the security chief on the USS Enterprise, but she still carries the burden of her infamous last name.
Ricardo Montalban's Khan Noonien Singh is arguably Star Trek's most iconic villain, and Khan and his family continue to affect Star Trek stories. Khan first appeared in Star Trek: The Original Series season 1, episode 22, "Space Seed," when Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and the USS Enterprise found Khan's ship floating in space. The genetically enhanced Khan had been a powerful tyrant on Earth during the late 20th century.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds handles time travel better than Star Trek: Picard. The focus on LA'an's journey and the impact of Khan's atrocities brings depth and character growth to the story. In Strange New Worlds, LA'an's encounter with Khan carries more weight than Picard meeting Renée. The moral question of whether to let Khan live or die reveals LA'an's character and fundamentally changes her. The time travel in Picard lacks focus and doesn't lead to meaningful character growth. Despite uncovering mysteries, nothing really changes for the main characters, including Jean-Luc Picard himself.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds explores the ever-popular time travel trope in season 2, episode 3, "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow", and handles it far better than Star Trek: Picard does in its messy second season. Both shows take their heroes back in time to 21st-century Earth, not too far off from when each show actually airs, and both...

Warning: Spoilers for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2, Episode 3 - "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow"Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' revelation that covert Romulan time travelers have repeatedly visited Earth's past in an effort to alter the timeline would seem to contradict an important plot point from Star Trek: Picard season 2. Warning: Spoilers for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2, Episode 4 - "Among The Lotus Eaters"Captain Batel (Melanie Scrofano) is a great girlfriend for Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, but Star Trek canon says this relationship sadly can't last. Batel was introduced in Strange New Worlds' series premiere. She is the Captain of the USS Cayuga, and Strange New Worlds season 2 later established Batel is an officer in Starfleet's Judge Advocate General's office.
Captain Batel had to follow her orders to arrest Pike's Number One, Commander Una Chin-Riley (Rebecca Romijn), in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 1's finale, and Batel served as the prosecutor at Una's court-martial in Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 2, "Ad Astra Per Aspera." Despite the friction this caused between Batel and Chris, they maintained their relationship until Pike torpedoed it in Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 4, "Among the Lotus Eaters.

Arguably Star Trek's greatest villain, Khan Noonien-Singh (Ricardo Montalban) has cropped up in several different Star Trek projects across multiple timelines. Introduced in the Star Trek: The Original Series episode, "Space Seed," Khan was a genetically enhanced human who became "the most dangerous adversary the Enterprise ever faced." In the original Star Trek canon, Khan rose to power in the 1990s along with several other genetically augmented tyrants. Soon after, wars broke out between the augments and their subjects in a conflict that became known as the Eugenics Wars.
After the events of Tos' "Space Seed," Captain Kirk (William Shatner) stranded Khan and his people on the barely-hospitable planet, Ceti Alpha V. In the following fifteen years, Starfleet never checked up on the augments, despite the fact that the orbit of Ceti Alpha V shifted, making the planet even more dangerous. This Star Trek: Strange New Worlds article contains spoilers.
At the end of the latest episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, La’an Noonien-Singh makes a shocking discovery. Hurled back to 21st-century Toronto, alongside James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley), to stop a history-changing attack by Romulans, La’an finds the holding area of her infamous ancestor, the genocidal warlord Khan Noonien Singh.
Tempted by the opportunity to not only destroy a vicious warlord but to also shake off the hatred for her name that still exists in her reality, La’an enters the room, gun drawn. However, she finds not the glowering madman played by Ricardo Montalbán in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan nor the simmering terror played by Benedict Cumberbatch. Instead, she finds a small child, whom she immediately comforts.
As sweet as this moment is, even more notable is who is playing Khan in the scene.

Warning: Spoilers for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2, Episode 3 - "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow"Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ season 2 time travel romp "Tomorrow And Tomorrow And Tomorrow" would seem to contradict a controversial Romulan retcon from Star Trek: Picard season 1. The third episode of Snw season 2 finds Lieutenant LA'an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong) abruptly sent on a mission to restore her timeline by preventing a mysterious attack alongside an alternate reality version of Captain James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley). It's an instant classic episode, largely due to Chong's masterful, dynamic performance as LA'an is forced to face her past in ways she could never have thought possible.

The following contains spoilers for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2, Episode 3, "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow," now streaming on Paramount+.
Star Trek's most famous villains aren't the Klingons, the Romulans or the Borg. Rather, it's a single human individual: Khan Noonien Singh. Strange New Worlds brings the character back again and, in doing so, fixes the most egregious mistake made in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek Into Darkness. Young actor Desmond Sivan takes on the role last played, inexplicably, by Benedict Cumberbatch.
Sivan, previously heard as a voice actor in kids' shows like Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood, is an actor of color like the person originally cast for the role. Khan made his debut back in 1967 on Star Trek: The Original Series, played by Ricardo Montalbán. He most famously reprised the role for Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, which cemented his status as the nemesis of the original USS Enterprise crew.

Captain Kirk goes back in time and has a powerful romance that ends in tragedy, a choice made for the greater good. Yes, that synopsis does describe the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds episode “Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow,” in which La’an and an alternate version of James Kirk share an adventure and a kiss in 21st-century Toronto before that Kirk dies in action.
But Star Trek fans may also recognize that synopsis as a description of one of the best episodes of the Original Series, “The City on the Edge of Forever.”
Written by Harlan Ellison, “The City on the Edge of Forever” finds Spock and Kirk traveling to 1930 to rescue an insane and time-displaced McCoy. Along the way, Kirk befriends a social worker and peace activist named Edith Keeler (Joan Collins) and quickly falls for her. But when Spock discovers that McCoy’s arrival prevented Keeler’s accidental death,...
