Most of the shows in this list will leave with a proper ending. Hopefully, Netflix won’t cancel as many shows as it did in 2024. However, there is speculation among fans that shows like Fubar, The Recruit, and Supacell might get the axe from the streamer in 2025.

The end is in sight for Heartbreak High. Netflix has renewed the reboot of the classic Australian comedy drama, which follows kids at a fictional high school, for a third and final season, the streamer announced Thursday.

Season 3 will see cast and creators reassemble in Sydney, Australia for the final year at Hartley High.

Season 2, released on April 11, premiered as one of the most popular shows both in Australia and worldwide on Netflix, according to the streamer. It debuted at #1 in Australia and stayed on the Global Top 10 English TV Series list for three consecutive weeks. The series also reached over 2 billion views on TikTok.

Thomas Weatherall, who plays Malakai on the show, revealed the renewal (and ending) via an Instagram video on the streamer’s Australia/New Zealand account.

“You guys have been absolutely hounding me to know what was in the letter that Malakai left for Amerie.

It's not as if she was twiddling her thumbs in Season 1, though; she absolutely had a position in the show with her stronger elements being carried into Season 2. In the first season, though, Missy's foremost role was being the friend of Sasha (Gemma Chua-Tran), as the two were paired up for a good portion of it. They both took Harper's (Asher Yasbineck) side in the friendship implosion between her and the protagonist, Amerie (Ayesha Madon), leaving the latter feeling betrayed after the discovery of Hartley High's "incest map." In Season 2, though, Missy gets quite the glow-up, as the series expands upon its most underrated character through her friendships and romantic relationships.

Think about it: Can you name a recent series that gives off Dawson’s Creek, The O.C. or even Pretty Little Liars energy? Shows that offer incredible melodrama, characters you simultaneously love/can’t stand and baffling storytelling choices in a high school setting? Not considering the supernatural ones — if only because their scope tends to reach too far beyond high school — we can count this type of all-engrossing youth drama on one hand. The teen soap output from The CW, Freeform (née ABC Family) and MTV has become all but nonexistent.

Netflix on Wednesday renewed the reboot of the classic Australian comedy drama for a second season.

The show, which is produced by Fremantle Australia and NewBe, launched September 14 on the streamer and amassed more than 42.6 million hours viewed in its first three weeks, putting it on Netflix’s top 10 lists.

The original Heartbreak High aired in Australia between 1994-1996 on Network Ten and between 1997-1999 on ABC Australia and also had a big fan base in the UK.

The reboot, which comes from Hannah Carroll Chapman, stars Asher Yasbincek, Gemma Chua-Tran, Josh Heuston, James Majoos, Chloe Hayden, Ayesha Madon, Sherry-Lee Watson, Will McDonald, Bryn Chapman-Parish, Brodie Townsend, Thomas Weatherall and Chika Ikogwe. It follows the kids at a fictional high school.

Production is now set to resume in Sydney.

The original Heartbreak High was a cult favourite teen soap, dripping with emblematically Nineties trappings: long, unwashed hair, a patchwork of plaid shirts, a dingy teen hangout run by an affectionate crank. Its depiction of Sydney life was gritty. The brooding cousin of longer-running Aussie soaps like Neighbours (Rip) and Home and Away (somehow still kicking), it arrived in the UK post-teatime with a cigarette dangling defiantly from its lip. It’s nostalgia so pure that I’m astonished it took Netflix this long to reboot the series. The new version keeps the straggly hair and plaid shirts, but adds sex, smartphones and social media. It’s a global hit, with more than 33 million hours of viewing time as of Wednesday.
