Cannes Review: Ari Aster’s Eddington is an Ambitious 2020 Period Piece That Works in Fits and Spurts
Image
In Eddington, Ari Aster’s latest doom spiral, the proposed building of a data center in nowhere New Mexico provides the catalyst for a long-overdue psychological breakdown. The man in question is Sheriff Joe Cross (Joaquin Phoenix), whose perceived list of ills includes a worryingly online mother-in-law (Deirdre O’Connell), a disinterested, catatonic wife (Emma Stone), a woke mayor (Pedro Pascal) with plans to build a state of the art data centre, and the familiar inconveniences of Covid-19. Should even reading that word cause discomfort, it’s nothing if not intended: since rewiring the horror genre with A24, Aster has been repositioning himself as cinema’s patron saint of debilitating anxiety. Hereditary is probably best-remembered for its brutal decapitation but, all these years later, one suspects the scariest thing for Aster was whether or not his protagonist, an artist with an imminent exhibition and a nervy benefactor, will make her deadline.

‘Eddington’ Is the Perfect Conspiracy Thriller for a Broken, Brainwashed Nation
Image
Ari Aster would like you to go back in time. The writer-director of Hereditary and Midsommar doesn’t need you to travel too far. Just five years. You probably remember a few of the details from May 2020: social distancing, social-media diatribes, swabs being thrust violently into nasal cavities, “I Can’t Breathe,” uprisings in the streets. It’s crazy to think all of this took place half a decade ago. It’s even crazier to ignore the creeping sensation that we’re still trapped in the moment when social stress fractures became chasms,...

‘Eddington’ Review: Joaquin Phoenix and Pedro Pascal Shoot Blanks in Ari Aster’s Neo-Western, Which Confuses Absurdism With Incoherence
Image
Did we all go completely nuts during those unsettlingly strange first months of Covid-19 lockdown in 2020, when cities became ghost towns and people thrust into isolation started gambling with their mental health by living online and buying whatever the social media echo chamber coughed up? That’s the assessment in Ari Aster’s Eddington, which views that collective national trauma through the microcosm of a fictitious New Mexico small town. Essentially a modern Western marbled with a vein of dark comedy, the movie is neither suspenseful nor funny enough to work as either. Mostly, it’s a distancing slog.

After the diabolically well-crafted classic horror of Hereditary and Midsommar, gifted writer-director Aster took a turn into more personal territory with the uneven Oedipal odyssey Beau Is Afraid, a tumble down a rabbit hole of neuroses full of striking nightmarish imagery and poignant confessional moments of crippled masculinity. Ultimately, though, the...

Emma Stone, Pedro Pascal, Joaquin Phoenix Walk the Red Carpet at Cannes ‘Eddington’ World Premiere | Photos
Image
Ari Aster made his Cannes Film Festival debut Friday with the world premiere of his latest psychological nightmare — this time a Western set in Covid times — on Friday. “Eddington” reunites the “Hereditary,” “Midsommar” and “Beau Is Afraid” filmmaker with the latter film’s Joaquin Phoenix. Emma Stone, Pedro Pascal and Austin Butler also star.

Aster has become known as a master of the psychological horror genre following his breakout film “Hereditary,” an intense look at the consequences of inherited family trauma, in 2018. In “Eddington,” Phoenix plays local sheriff Joe Cross in a small town in New Mexico during the 2020 Covid pandemic. Cross comes to a head with Pedro Pascal’s Ted Garcia, the town’s mayor who leads the community into a world of chaos with his questionable decision-making. The film explores the power of fake news, the fragility of community and how conspiracy theories can lead to a rabbit...

Eddington review - Ari Aster’s tedious Covid western masks drama and mutes his stars
Joaquin Phoenix
Cannes film festival

Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal, Emma Stone and Austin Butler have little to work with in this disappointing dud from the Hereditary and Midsommar director

Ari Aster now worryingly creates a losing streak with this bafflingly dull movie, a laborious and weirdly self-important satire which makes a heavy, flavourless meal of some uninteresting and unoriginal thoughts – on the Covid lockdown, online conspiracy theories, social polarisation, Black Lives Matter, liberal-white privilege and guns.

The movie looks good, courtesy of Darius Khondji’s cinematography, but has nothing new or dramatically vital to say, and moreover manages the extraordinary achievement of making Emma Stone, Pedro Pascal and Joaquin Phoenix look like boring actors. This is by virtue of its moderate script and by the unvarying stolid pace over its hefty running time which might have suited a 12-episode streamer.

‘Eddington’s’ Matt Gomez Hidaka on Being Directed by Ari Aster and Acting Opposite Joaquin Phoenix
Image
Not many would willingly relive the spring of 2020, when the Covid-19 pandemic was still in its nascent stages and we still disinfected groceries while remaining socially distant in our homes. But, for a chance to act opposite Joaquin Phoenix and Pedro Pascal, it was worth it for Matt Gomez Hidaka.

Gomez Hidaka, 27, stars in Midsommar director Ari Aster’s latest movie for A24, Eddington. The film takes place in May 2020 and is set in a small town in New Mexico where the local sheriff (Phoenix) faces off against the mayor (Pascal). The plot has been kept under wraps, but in the trailer for the film, news coverage and social media posts revisit the chaotic pandemic era, from reports tracking the virus’ spread to the rising racial reckoning and protests against police brutality that erupted in the summer. Gomez Hidaka plays the son of Pascal’s mayor.

Ari Aster's 'Eddington' Trailer Offers First Look at Pandemic-Era Western
Image
The first trailer for Eddington offers a chaotic first look at Ari Aster's upcoming A24 Western feature ahead of its premiere next month. The movie centers on the conflict between small-town sheriff Joe Cross (Joaquin Phoenix) and local mayor Ted Garcia (Pedro Pascal) in the fictional town of Eddington, New Mexico, but the first footage reveals that pressures from external factors will only intensify their personal and political standoff, including real-world issues such as the Covid-19 pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement.

The tagline that accompanied the trailer on social media read "Hindsight is 2020," referencing the tumultuous year that saw the onset of the global outbreak of the coronavirus disease and the widespread demonstrations protesting racial injustice and police brutality. "Of course, they keep looking at that lab in China. If you look at that lab in Wuhan," a voice narrates over the clips at the beginning of the trailer.

‘Eddington’ Teaser: Joaquin Phoenix Doomscrolls in Ari Aster’s Pandemic-Era Dark Comedy
Image
Ari Aster’s fourth film, Eddington, is set in May of 2020 and depicts a standoff between a small-town sheriff (Joaquin Phoenix) and mayor (Pedro Pascal) that, per distributor A24, “sparks a powder keg as neighbor is pitted against neighbor in Eddington, New Mexico.” You wouldn’t know from its official logline that the film has any connection to the Covid-19 pandemic. Not so for the film’s first teaser, which depicts Phoenix’s character doomscrolling, as many of us did, during what appears to be lockdown.

Aster’s film, which will have its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival next month, also stars Emma Stone, Austin Butler, Luke Grimes, Deirdre O’Connell, Micheal Ward, Clifton Collins Jr., William Belleau, Cameron Mann, Matt Gomez Hidaka, and Amélie Hoeferle.

Tensions rise in a small town in the teaser trailer for A24 movie Eddington from writer-director Ari Aster.

Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal, Emma Stone and Austin Butler star in the contemporary Western feature that premieres next month at the Cannes Film Festival. In addition to releasing the trailer, A24 announced Monday that the movie is set to hit theaters nationwide July 18.

Eddington centers on conflict between the mayor (Phoenix) and sheriff (Pascal) of the small town of Eddington, New Mexico. Rounding out the cast are Luke Grimes, Deirdre O’Connell, Micheal Ward, Clifton Collins Jr., William Belleau, Cameron Mann, Matt Gomez Hidaka and Amélie Hoeferle.

“If you value your life, you should think twice because the people at Eddington like guns,” Phoenix says sternly in the disorienting trailer.

Ari Aster’s “Eddington” is already creating buzz, weeks before its Cannes premiere. Aster reunites with his “Beau Is Afraid” star Joaquin Phoenix for the secretive dark comedy. Silo season 2 episodes ranked from worst to best
Image
When it comes to any TV show, some episodes are stronger than others. Silo season 2 certainly had a strong season, but how do the episodes hold up against each other?

This was a season set in two locations. We saw Juliette make it to Silo 17, learning that her own silo isn’t the only place on Earth, and that her people aren’t the only survivors. Meanwhile, a rebellion threatened to grow in Silo 18, as many in Mechanical believed that Juliette was alive and the air outside was safe.

There were some parts of the story that dragged, but by the end of the season, we were certainly left wanting more. Let’s rank the episodes from worst to best.

Quick Links Who Died in the Season 2 Finale of 'Silo'? Iain Glen Died Another Sacrificial Death in 'Game of Thrones' How His 'Silo' and 'Game of Thrones' Characters Compare

Through its two-season run so far, Silo has sadly seen several main character deaths. It started with Allison Becker (Rashida Jones), who sacrificed herself to prove what she thought was the truth. Then, it was George (Ferdinand Kingsley), whose death was the precursor to Juliette (Rebecca Ferguson) looking into things at the silo. Deaths continued to abound in Season 1, including Holston Becker (David Oyelowo), Ruth Jahns (Geraldine James), and Sam Marnes (Will Patton).

This didn’t slow down in Season 2 as the body count continued with Judge Mary Meadows (Tanya Moodie), Terry Cooper (Matt Gomez Hidaka), and the latest season finale death that left fans reeling.

10 Sci-Fi TV Shows That Have An Excellent Mystery Element
Image
Sci-fi shows create unique circumstances where one or more scientific limitations in the present world have been broken. Some of the most bingeworthy sci-fi TV shows just dive into their worlds and provide exposition about the rules of their societies and the laws of nature in their universes. Not all shows go too deep with their lore, though, and some fun and lighthearted sci-fi shows are more invested in exploring the cool consequences of the sci-fi concept instead of focusing on how the sci-fi world works and how it came to be.

But, some sci-fi shows like to spend time on why their worlds came to be and focus on the mystery element of the science fiction. Some of the best British sci-fi shows of all time are all about the mysteries of the Universe. The characters try and figure out the various anomalies that made their world the way it is,...

In Season 2, Episode 4, "The Harmonium," Robbin's Bernard kills Tanya Moodie's Mayor Meadows after she decides to "go out to clean," following in Sherriff Juliette Nichols (Rebecca Ferguson)'s footsteps.

Bernard feels forced to act to maintain control of the silo, which is on the brink of chaos. In an interview with Collider, Robbins discussed his character's motivation and the attendant implications of his actions. "I think he's doing it because he's trying to save the silo. No question. This is the tragedy of the character. He has to do things that he doesn't want to do. It's a pretty effed-up place [to be in]," he explained.

Steve Zahn Teases Emotional Off-Script Scenes in Silo Season 2
Image
In Apple TV+'s Silo, where most of the world's population has perished and the rest remain in an underground silo, most newcomers aren't exactly strangers. The exception is Steve Zahn's Solo, a reclusive man living in Silo 17 who Juliette meets on her journey outside Silo 18 in Season 2. Silo hasn't yet revealed much about Solo, keeping his storyline and importance to Juliette's journey a secret. But his one and only line in the official trailer is enough to show he's not a man to be crossed: "You try to open the door again, and I'm gonna kill you."

According to Zahn, Solo is very similar to another character of his that represented vulnerability: Bad Ape from War of the Planet of the Apes. That alone speaks volumes about the type of character Solo is, but Zahn also adds originality to Solo's character that people have never seen before. Talking to Cbr,...

Silo season 2 episode 3 review: Deceit leads to rebellion
Image
The more you lie to people, the more the lies unravel. That’s something Bernard needs to deal with in Silo season 2 episode 3. Meanwhile, Juliette just needs some answers.

Caution: This post contains Spoilers from Silo season 2 episode 3

We see in dystopian worlds that as leaders try to hold onto power, they end up causing a rebellion to happen. Bernard knows this is the case. The problem is the world that has been set up within the silo makes it impossible for him to share the truth.

It’s clear that he knows more than he is letting on. Judge Meadows also knows more considering she was once his shadow. She wishes she could forget that—and it does make me wonder why she hasn’t taken this memory loss pill that Sims mentions in the episode. I guess while she wants to forget, there’s a lot that she wants to remember.

Review: Silo season 2 grapples with escalating consequences in Episode 203, "Solo"
Image
The third episode of Apple TV+'s sci-fi show Silo is out now, and it's a doozy. The first season ended with a huge shake-up as Sheriff Juliette Nichols (Rebecca Ferguson) left the titular undergound Silo and set out into the wider world, only to discover that it was a wasteland. By necessity, season 2 has had to take a lot of time to re-establish the chess board following those events. The first episode, "The Engineer," was all about Juliette's journey into a neighboring Silo, where she found the last survivor of a rebellion that caused the deaths of thousands. The second, "Order," caught us up with everyone Juliette left behind, showing how her home Silo was turning into a powder keg as people demanded answers and the powers-that-be manipulated events to keep things calm.

In "Solo," Silo is finally able to represent all these plotlines and more onscreen in one episode.

How Heat Tape Keeps Juliette Alive in 'Silo' and What It Means for Season 2
Image
Silo had a strong start on Apple TV+, and out of the gate, the second season is just as enthralling. The sci-fi dystopian drama is based on the Hugh Howey set of novels, Wool, Shift, and Dust. The story follows a group of survivors who live in a community underground. The 144-level silo has a hierarchy just like the current world with the top brass on the upper levels and the menial workers down below. Everyone is warned that the outside is a vast wasteland and asking to go outside results in almost immediate death. A camera pointed outdoors proves just that, leaving residents fearful and obedient.

When an engineer from the lower level named Juliette (Rebecca Ferguson) starts questioning and investigating to uncover the truth, however, the result is devastating when shes forced to go outside herself. But against all odds, she survives thanks to a very specific modification to her suit.
