The Best New Artist category is easily one of the most anticipated awards at the Latin Grammys. Last year, for the first time ever, there was a tie between rising Mexican singer-songwriter Silvana Estrada and Angela Alvarez, a 95-year-old Cuban grandmother whose relatives had submitted her album — proving anything can happen. For the 2023 ceremony, which takes place on Nov. 16 in Seville, Spain, 10 artists representing different genres and distinct musical cultures are vying for the award. The list includes acts from countries such as the U.S., Mexico, Venezuela, Spain, and more.

Queer representation on the small screen has certainly come a long way over the past two decades, not only in terms of quality but also quantity. Back when I was a baby queer in the early 2000s, “The L Word” was pretty much all I had to see parts of my experience on TV, save for the rare gay subplots of popular teen shows — never forget Marissa’s brief but extremely hot dalliance with Olivia Wilde on “The O.C.” The stereotyped gays of “Sex and the City” and “Will and Grace” were replaced over the years by more fleshed out and nuanced queer characters across the LGBTQ+ spectrum, and, finally, we’ve seen some actually well-written trans characters played by trans performers. Isabel Torres, the Spanish transgender actress who played LGBT icon Cristina Ortiz “La Veneno” Rodríguez in the 2020 HBO Max miniseries “Veneno,” died Friday after battling lung cancer.

“Today, February 11, 2022, we say goodbye to Isabel,” her family wrote in Spanish on her Instagram account. “Although her family and friends deeply feel her loss, we know that wherever she goes she will have fun as only she knows how. Thank you for all the messages of affection and concern. She has left feeling very loved and embraced.”

The actress, whose Spanish films include “Fotos,” and “Camino a la locura,” played the oldest version of “La Veneno'”in the HBO series, with younger versions played by Daniela Santiago and Marcos Sotkovszki.

“I think in it there was a lot of me, and in her there was a lot of all of us,” Torres told The Advocate in January 2021 of portraying the trailblazing transgender star.

Pedro Almodóvar has dropped the first official trailer for “Madres paralelas,” which is set to open this year’s Venice Film Festival.

“Madres paralelas” is led by long-time Almodóvar favorite Penélope Cruz who is joined by key cast members Aitana Sánchez-Gijón (“Boca a Boca”) and Milena Smit (“Cross the Line”), “Veneno” duo Israel Elejalde and Daniela Santiago, and two more Almodóvar regulars in Julieta Serrano and Rossy de Palma, co-stars of the Oscar-nominated “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown.”

“Madres paralelas” — “Parallel Mothers” in English — turns on a trio of mothers, played by Cruz, Gijón and Smit, and expands Almodóvar’s previous depictions of womanhood by turning the film’s focus on imperfect mothers.

Directors Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo were meeting with television executives in their native Spain when they were asked to name someone they’d love to make a biographical series about.

“They probably expected us to say someone like Julio Iglesias, but one of us said, ‘La Veneno,’” Calvo tells Variety during a Zoom interview from the couple’s home in Madrid. “It was like a revelation. One man was looking down at his papers and looked up and was like, ‘What did you say? Who?’ And I was just like, ‘She was a transgender woman. She was famous, but she was a prostitute. And then she went to jail.’ We started to develop this TV show in our heads.”

HBO Mas has five more international series to its roster, including “The Great Pottery Throw Down” from the producers of “The Great British Bake Off.”

HBO Max will get the first three seasons and the upcoming fourth season of the competition series, which air on the BBC and Channel 4 in the U.K.

Additionally, HBO Max will be home to all seasons of the Italian crime series “Gomorrah,” based on Roberto Saviano’s bestselling book that examines the account of the decline of Naples under the rule of the Camorra, including its prequel film, “The Immortal”; “Veneno,” a Spanish language co-production between Atresmedia Studios, Suma Latina and HBO Max about Cristina Ortiz, Spain’s most famous trans TV personality; and Season One of unscripted relationship series “Singletown,” which sees five couples press pause on their partnerships and embark on an extraordinary adventure back to the single life.
