It’s rare to see a fantasy film this ambitious emerge from the low-budget landscape. Yet The Reign of Queen Ginnarra, directed by Lawrie Brewster, defies expectation and takes a mighty, sword-wielding swipe. At a time when even mid-range studio pictures play it safe, this brave, often bonkers slice of medieval melodrama dares to summon dragons, cosmic horrors, and dynastic treachery, all wrapped in a swirling cloak of Lovecraftian darkness.

At nearly three hours long, it plunges headfirst into the dark waters of medieval fantasy, horror, and political tragedy. It’s full of jagged edges, wild tonal shifts, and occasional lapses in polish, and yet, for all its imperfections, it remains compulsively watchable.

Crown of Shadows, also know as The Reign of Queen Ginnarra (the title under which it played film festivals), is a dark, Gothic medieval horror film from director Lawrie Brewster – credited on the DVD from High Fliers as Richard Campbell – and writer Sarah Daly who’ve previously worked together on other Hex Studios productions such as Lord of Tears, The Devil’s Machine, Dragon Knight and The Slave and the Sorcerer.

This latest effort comes from the companies new “strand”, Hex Elder Myths and combines both Brewster and Daly’s past experience in both horror and and action, taking tropes and stereotypes from both genres, fusing medieval fantasy with Lovercraftian horror to deliver what is a sword and sorcery epic. And I don’t use the word epic lightly, because this film runs a whopping 142 minutes!

Laurence R. Harvey has joined the cast of Megan Tremethick’s forthcoming uncanny horror project, Spoiling You. The accomplished actor—renowned for unsettling performances in The Human Centipede series—takes on the role of a devoted fanatic of Asmr performer Miss Mutter. This wild and unpredictable character unleashes chaos in the film’s chilling narrative. Tremethick, who also stars in the film, contributes both on screen and behind the camera to bring the story to life. The film is co-written by producer Lawrie Brewster, adding his distinctive storytelling expertise to the project.
