Prime Video’s 2025 screen life take on War of the Worlds was supposed to bring H.G. Wells into the digital era, but instead it crashed spectacularly. It launched to a rare 0% on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics called its all-monitor setup dull and said the heavy Amazon product placement undermined any suspense.

Even a brief stint at No. 1 in Prime Video’s Top Ten couldn’t stop audiences from tuning out. But despite the movie crashing and burning, the cast didn’t walk away empty‑handed. Ice Cube and his co‑stars still pocketed hefty checks. Crown of Shadows, also know as The Reign of Queen Ginnarra (the title under which it played film festivals), is a dark, Gothic medieval horror film from director Lawrie Brewster – credited on the DVD from High Fliers as Richard Campbell – and writer Sarah Daly who’ve previously worked together on other Hex Studios productions such as Lord of Tears, The Devil’s Machine, Dragon Knight and The Slave and the Sorcerer.

This latest effort comes from the companies new “strand”, Hex Elder Myths and combines both Brewster and Daly’s past experience in both horror and and action, taking tropes and stereotypes from both genres, fusing medieval fantasy with Lovercraftian horror to deliver what is a sword and sorcery epic. And I don’t use the word epic lightly, because this film runs a whopping 142 minutes!
