Announced his retirement on the Johnathan Ross Show in November 2014 stating that after years of being on the road touring, he wanted to spend time with his wife whom he married aged 20. He said: "This is it, I ain't doing nothing. I'm gonna go and see my wife, give her a big hug and say I am yours".

His then-fiancée Heather fell pregnant by him in the summer of 1982 whilst they were living in Scarborough; she went on to suffer an ectopic pregnancy. As a result of the tragedy they did not consider trying for another baby until 10 years later, resulting in their daughter Mollie.
