Was the first actor to be involved with three different productions of "Zorro", and also the first Latino to play the role of Zorro for television. He was the voice of Zorro/Don Diego in the animated series The New Adventures of Zorro (1981) (which was broadcast as part of The New Adventures of the Lone Ranger (1980)). He then starred as the elderly Zorro/Don Diego--the only actor to have portrayed both characters--in the series Zorro and Son (1983). Then he was Don Alejandro, Don Diego's father, in Zorro (1990) for three of its four seasons.

Of Puerto Rican descent, he was born in New York City but resided in Puerto Rico as a teenager and collegiate before returning to the mainland on an acting scholarship to the Pasadena Playhouse in the late 1950s.

Former Western/Italian movie actor Cameron Mitchell took him under his wing, when he was age 34. Their friendship lasted for 23 years until Mitchell's own death on July 6, 1994 at age 75.

In 1972, Darrow co-founded the Screen Actors Guild Ethnic Minority Committee with actors Ricardo Montalban, Carmen Zapata and Edith Diaz.

Was a guest at the 2012 Memphis Film Festival's "A Gathering of Guns 4: A TV Western Reunion" at the Whispering Woods Hotel and Conference Center in Olive Branch, Mississippi.

Was a guest at the Western Film Fair in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 1997 and 2005.

He played Don Diego de la Vega/Zorro in The New Adventures of Zorro (1981) and Zorro and Son (1983) and his father Don Alexandro de la Vega in Zorro (1990). He was the only actor to have portrayed both characters.

Upon his death, he was cremated and his ashes were scattered at sea.

He was a lifelong Democrat.

Attended and graduated from Academia del Perpetuo Socorro in Miramar, Puerto Rico.

Received his Bachelor of Arts degree in theater arts from the University of Puerto Rico.
