The Weird History of Friday the 13th Comics
Gavin Jasper Sep 13, 2019

Friday the 13th boasts some of the strangest movie tie-in comics ever made. We hit the bloody highs and lows. Mostly lows.

Friday the 13th’s Jason Voorhees has been part of pop-culture for decades. It shouldn’t be surprising that he’s had his share of comic book adventures, what with him essentially being a supervillain in a story with no superheroes. Granted, he’s a one-dimensional supervillain with an incredibly vague origin story, but he’s been memorable enough to land him a dozen movie appearances. Many have told his tale in comic form and since the early '90s, he’s been represented by three different publishers.

The surprising thing to me is that the earliest Jason comic is only in the early 90s. For comparison, the RoboCop comics all stretched across the franchise’s entire existence. They were around for all four movies...

Guest Blog: Dark Horse Editor Scott Allie Interviews Author Christopher Golden
In honor of the release of Christopher Golden's Joe Golem and the Drowning City in limited edition hardcover on October 3 and Baltimore: The Play, his collaboration with Mike Mignola, on November 21, Dark Horse editor Scott Allie interviewed the award-winning author for us.

Topics covered in the interview include Golden's interpretation of the term "dark fantasy," his upcoming project with True Blood author Charlaine Harris, vampires in our current culture, his influences, the scariest thing he's written, and Lots more. Check it out below, and look for more guest blogs from Scott Allie over the coming weeks.

Scott Allie: Can you explain “dark fantasy” to me?

Christopher Golden: The easy approach would be to say it's a merger of horror and fantasy, but that's not always true. For me, dark fantasy is fantasy in which nasty things happen. For people who've read my original novels, dark fantasy would be easy to recognize.

Dennis Weaver in Duel (1971)
Comic Book Review: 'Road Rage': "Throttle" Issue #1
Dennis Weaver in Duel (1971)
In 2009, editor Christopher Conlon compiled a creatively ambitious anthology: He is Legend, published by Gauntlet Press, featured sixteen stories either based upon or inspired by the fiction of horror legend Richard Matheson. The credits are impressive to anyone with a passing knowledge of horror fiction luminaries – Nancy Collins, Ed Gorman, William Nolan, and more – but the major draw was the first published collaboration between Stephen King and his son, bestselling writer Joe Hill. Their story, "Throttle," takes its inspiration from Matheson's powerful novella, Duel, and like Duel, it's a story involving a conflict between big and little vehicles … but that's where the stories...

Idw Publishing Unveils New Mash-Up Series: Classics Mutilated
"Dread Island", the title of the debut novella from Idw Publishing's Classics Mutilated collection, caught our eye for obvious reasons. After learning that it was written by Joe R. Lansdale and doing a little more digging into what Classics Mutilated is all about, we're even more intrigued.

From the Press Relesae:

Classics Mutilated offers a different take on the current monster-lit trend by challenging a coterie of major talents to twist fantasy and horror elements with classic tales and icons, creating all-new stories. Lansdale's "Dread Island" showcases the collection's unique tone by featuring Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer in a new adventure, with bizarre fantasy and supernatural elements out of both H. P. Lovecraft and Uncle Remus.

"I wrote 'Dread Island' based on my love for Mark Twain," reveals Lansdale, "which collided with my interest in Lovecraft, and the fact that the Uncle Remus tales may have been the first stories I ever read.
