Best known for his role as Dr. Watson (opposite Jeremy Brett as Sherlock Holmes) in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (1984) which portrayed the character as an intelligent and dynamic man as the stories depict. He was replaced by Edward Hardwicke in The Return of Sherlock Holmes (1986) and The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes (1994).

Father of actor Tom Burke, with whom he appeared on The Inspector Lynley Mysteries (2001) episode, In Pursuit of the Proper Sinner (2004).

Son-in-law of Arthur Calder-Marshall.
