From these two shows came the songs "Typically English", "Gonna Build a Mountain", "Once in a Lifetime", "What Kind of Fool Am I?", "On a Wonderful Day Like Today", and "Who Can I Turn To (When Nobody Needs Me)?".

Was nominated for Broadway's Tony Award five times: in 1963, three time for "Stop the World - I Want to Get Off," shared with collaborator Anthony Newley as Best Author (Musical), Best Composer and Lyricist and for book music and lyrics as part of a Best Musical nomination; in 1965, again with Newley, as Best Composer and Lyricist for "The Roar of the Greasepaint - The Smell of the Crowd;" and 32 years later, in 1997, on his own as Best Book of a Musical for "Jekyll and Hyde." He wrote the lyrics to Frank Wildhorn's music, but only the lyricist's book was nominated. Unfortunately, he never won a Tony Award.
