Now, according to Fremantle COO Bob McCourt, things are heating up for a return of red swimsuits, daring rescues, and plenty of lifeguard drama. During an Nem event in Dubrovnik, Croatia, McCourt shared that "We’re in advanced talks with Fox in the U.S. about the Baywatch reboot," with a series order appearing to be close at hand. He says the newfound momentum for the series stems from Fremantle's extensive efforts to bring the original series to viewers through a dedicated Fast channel, which has since become the company's second most popular offering.

Michael “Newmie” Newman, the real-life lifeguard who appeared for 10 seasons on Baywatch as one of action show’s most popular characters, has died after his long battle with Parkinson’s disease. He was 67.

Newman died Sunday at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, Matthew Felker, the writer, director and producer behind the new Hulu docuseries After Baywatch: Moment in the Sun, told The Hollywood Reporter. He was diagnosed in 2006.

“This terminal disease has allowed me a lot of thinking time, which I maybe didn’t want, but it’s brought me wisdom,” Newman told People magazine two months ago.

A onetime Iron Man competitor and firefighter who was 6-foot-5 and 250 pounds in his prime, Newman was the only Baywatch castmember who actually worked as a Los Angeles County lifeguard, having started out as a junior lifeguard in the shadow of the Santa Monica Pier when he was 10.

Newman died “from heart complications’ on Sunday, October 20, “surrounded by his family and friends,” his friend Matt Felker, who recently directed the Hulu docuseries After Baywatch: Moment in the Sun, confirmed to People.

Newman became known for his role as lifeguard Mike “Newmie” Newman in NBC’s Baywatch, in which he appeared in 150 episodes from 1989 to 2000. Newman was the only cast member on the show who was actually a lifeguard. He had worked as an L.A. County lifeguard for 20 years, beginning at age 10 as a Santa Monica Junior Lifeguard.

Hulu, which touched on the legacy of “Baywatch” as part of its 2022 scripted limited series “Pam & Tommy,” is heading back to the beach. The streamer is set to premiere the four-part ABC News Studios docuseries “After Baywatch: Moment in the Sun” on Wednesday, Aug. 28.

Matthew Felker (“Public Figure”) is the producer and director behind the project, which began production in 2019 as “Baywatch: The Documentary” before evolving into “After Baywatch: Moment in the Sun” and landing ABC News Studios as the series’ production company.

A reboot of Baywatch is now in the works courtesy of Fox Entertainment and Fremantle. According to a report by Deadline, a new Baywatch series has now been given a “significant script plus penalty commitment,” suggesting that the studios have a lot of faith in the reboot project which, much like the original, will follow the lives and adventures of a team of lifeguards who patrol the beaches of Los Angeles County, California.

Private Practice, 90210, and Spinning Out’s Lara Olsen has written the Baywatch reboot series and will serve as showrunner.

On Monday, the network confirmed a reboot of the iconic 1989-2001 series is in the works.

The project already has a showrunner attached in Lara Olsen – best known for Netflix’s brilliant but canceled Spinning Out.

Original creators Michael Berk, Douglas Schwartz, and Gregory J. Bonann have all scored executive producer credits for the one-hour drama.

Fox and Fremantle have tapped Lara Olsen (“Spinning Out”) to serve as showrunner for the new “Baywatch,” which was originally created by Michael Berk, Douglas Schwartz and Gregory J. Bonann. Fox is doubling down on lifeguard dramas with a significant script plus penalty commitment to Baywatch, a reboot of the classic beach series. The new iteration is a co-production between Fremantle and Fox Entertainment.

Deadline revealed exclusively last April that Fremantle was working on a Baywatch remake. At the time, Fox already had started conversations with the indie studio for the potential series while also developing another lifeguard drama franchise, Rescue: Hi-Surf, from John Wells Prods. The latter, a co-production between Warner Bros. TV and Fox Entertainment, was subsequently picked up to series for the 2023-24 season; it is now on track for a fall 2024 launch due to strike-related delays.

Meanwhile, Fox remained interested in Baywatch, potentially as a summer series.

The logline: Rescue 3 is an elite multi-agency task force in South California that encompasses lifeguard, firefighter and Coast Guard agencies. Each episode will center on big-action life-saving rescues involving all 3 services. Bonann, who exec produced Baywatch and is a 43-year vet of the L.A.
