His father, Jacob Baer, was born in Michigan, the son of Aschill Baer and Fannie Fischel, who were Jewish emigrants from Alsace-Lorraine and Bohemia, respectively. His mother, Dora (Bales), was born in Iowa, and was of Scots-Irish descent.

He and his family moved to a farm in Livermore, California, when he was 15. Though born in Omaha, Nebraska, he always considered Livermore to be his hometown.
