Co-creator of The Monkees (1965).
Directed six performers in Oscar-nominated performances: Dyan Cannon, Elliott Gould, Art Carney, Jill Clayburgh, Lena Olin and Anjelica Huston. Carney won for his performance in Harry and Tonto (1974).
Close friends with Mel Brooks.
Received a lifetime achievement award from the Writers Guild of America on February 1, 2014.

That is the difference between me and Ingmar Bergman. I once said to [Bergman's cinematographer] Sven Nykvist, "Does Bergman have a sense of humor?". And Sven said, "Ja, ja, Ingmar has a funny nightmare.".
Don't forget, most Hollywood movies are designed to lie about sex anyway.
I find it impossible to spend much time with someone who doesn't have a real sense of humor. Humor is not just a way of looking at life. It's the way you experience things. Nobody lives life free of pain, but you can get past the pain with humor. It's what separates me from some very nice people who simply don't get the joke.
Canadians are crazy. On the deepest level, they're the most loyal people in the world. No matter how well Canadian actors do in the United States, you can call them and say, "They want you to shovel squirrel s*** in a movie in Canada." And they'll say, "It's for Canada, I'll be there." They love being Canadians.
