Never prepared for interviews. His reasoning was that the average audience member knew little or nothing about a given show guest, so he preferred to begin as they would begin, and learn about the guest during the course of the show.
I never think of access or good will. I just want a good interview. I want guests to be informative and entertaining. I've never been concerned about someone's liking me tomorrow.
