With "Der Edelweisskönig" (1939) he realised his first movie as a director. Later on he shot other well-known productions as a director like "08/15" (1954), "Weil du arm bist, musst du früher sterben" (1956), "Der Fuchs von Paris" (1957), "Weisser Holunder" (1957) and "Und ewig singen die Wälder" (1959).

For some of his movies he also wrote the script and was responsible as a producer.

Paul May was married with the actress and the screen writer Ille Gotthelft.

After secondary school in Feldkirch, he entered to film industry and trained in film laboratory work.

He was able to realise again successful movies in the 60s and especially his TV productions "Die vier Schlüssel" (1965) und "Melissa" (1966) - based on novels by Francis Durbridge - became very popular and became blockbusters.

Because his father Peter Ostermayr was already active as a movie producer the young Paul May also decided to make his way in the film business and he visited the Staatslehranschalt for "Lichtbildwesen".

After the Second World War, he (Paul Ostermayr) adopted the pseudonym Paul May.

His first marriage was with the actress Annelies Reinhold.

He first gained a foothold in the film business as a cutter and he was responsible for many well-known movies as an editor.

Simultanously to his activity as a cutter he made first experiences as a director assistant from 1933.

He was the son of producer Peter Ostermayr.
