His mother, Clarice, was from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada and raised in Montreal, Quebec, Canada; his father, Irving, was an American. He became a Canadian citizen and had dual citizenship with Canada and the United States.

His surname comes from the Russian word "Chayka" which means "Seagull."

Grew up in Brooklyn, New York.

His daughter, with Susannah Hoffmann, is named Rose.
