Was novelist Anne Rice's choice to play Lestat in Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles (1994). More marquee value was needed for the role and the part ultimately went to Tom Cruise.

An avid runner and mountain climber/hiker who often took off on solo adventures, Sands disappeared on January 13, 2023, after he went for a hike near the Mouny Baldy area of California's San Bernardino Mountains. Local authorities and search and rescue teams conducted over six weeks of multiple ground and aerial searches, which were unsuccessful. On June 24, 2023, hikers near Mount Baldy discovered human remains. On June 27, 2023, local authorities confirmed the remains to be those of Julian Sands.

Studied at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London, where he met a journalist named Sarah Harvey (now Sarah Sands), who became his first wife.

Was introduced to his wife, Evgenia, by John Malkovich.

Was married to Guinness heiress Evgenia Citkowitz. Evgenia is the granddaughter of the late Maureen [Guinness], Marchioness of Dufferin and Ava, one of a glamorous trio of sisters.

His son Henry was born in 1985. Actor John Malkovich is Henry's godfather. Julian Sands and Malkovich became close after meeting on the set of किलिंग फील्ड्स (1984) and appeared in several projects together since.

As of 2022, he had appeared in two films that were nominated for the Best Picture Oscar: किलिंग फील्ड्स (1984) and A Room with a View (1985).

In 1991, he was scheduled to have played the role of Charles Gould in David Lean's adaptation of Joseph Conrad's Nostromo. Lean's death in April 1991 brought the production to an end.

Has two younger daughters from his second marriage: Natalya Morley Sands (b. 14/16 August 1996), and Imogen Morley Sands (b. 31 December 1999).

His early theatre days were spent with the Forum Theatre Company.
