Apple TV+ has revealed a first look at season five of Slow Horses, the Emmy and BAFTA Award-winning espionage drama starring Academy Award winner Gary Oldman. Back in 2007, before he became TV’s go-to auteur for smart genre programming for grown-ups, Oscar nominated writer Scott Frank made a transition to directing with The Lookout, a twisty slab of neo-noir that features, among other things, my favorite performance from Matthew Goode, in a charmingly vicious turn.

It’s been 18 years, but Frank and Goode have finally reteamed for Netflix’s Dept. Q, a nine-episode adaptation of the first book in Jussi Adler-Olsen’s series of Danish crime novels — though I say “finally” as if there’s a there are zillions of us Lookout-istas clamoring for this reunion.

For the more casually fanatical, it’s probably more of a draw to say that after Godless, The Queen’s Gambit and Monsieur Spade, Dept. Q continues to confirm how good Frank is at well-crafted, complicated dramas that prove that you don’t need to do anything unprecedented to make a good TV show.

Gary Oldman in Slow Horses on Apple TV+ was undoubtedly the performer of the year. He captivated people in the role of Jackson Lamb, the MI5’s Slough House leader, very different from regular spy protagonists, who are all sorted and proper. Oldman displayed the perfect blend of depth and gruffness, with equal ease and conviction.

Despite his stellar performance and the immense critical acclaim for the show, Oldman hasn’t received any major award for his role. This raises major questions on the whole award and recognition format and how biased things can be at times in the entertainment industry.

Warner Bros. Discovery has announced the movies, TV shows, and live sports that will be available on the Max (soon to be called HBO Max) streaming service in June. Eli Roth’s recently-launched company The Horror Section has signed a deal with Construction Film, the German-based production banner founded by producer and actress Veronica Ferres.

The multi-year, multi-picture co-financing and production alliance — signed in partnership with Media Capital Technologies — has launched with the announcement of two genre-driven feature titles.

Leading the slate is a German-language remake of Eli Roth’s 2015 psychological crime thriller “Knock Knock,” which originally starred Keanu Reeves and Ana de Armas. Roth is set to produce. He will also write and direct an original project, “Final Cut,” a giallo feature currently in development in which Veronica Ferres will play a principal role. Exclusive: UK actor Jason Isaacs is set to join Djimon Hounsou and Ariyon Bakare in Donovan Marsh’s action drama The Bleeding Ground, due to shoot in South Africa early next year.

The White Lotus star will play an oil executive caught in a stand-off against a militant leader who is driven by personal loss and a quest for justice.

The Bleeding Ground is being produced by Jean-Luc Van Damme of Belgium’s Happy Moon Productions, with UK producer David P Kelly. The script is by UK screenwriter Mathew Bayliss.

Production is scheduled to begin in early 2026 for nine-weeks in Cape Town and Durban.

For the past few years, Netflix could fairly be accused of employing a strategy of throwing everything they've got against a wall and seeing what sticks. With new series and original films premiering on a weekly basis, viewers are both spoiled for choice and browbeaten into submission with the sheer quantity of options at their fingertips. But let's be honest, quality control hasn't exactly been the name of the game for the streamer. They traffic in numbers, pure and simple, and with enough content there's sure to be some projects that end up being winners. That's just the law of probabilities.

Hannibal sees the world-famous cannibal Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) still at large following his escape at the end of The Silence of the Lambs. The disfigured Mason Verger (Gary Oldman), Hannibal’s only surviving victim, is dead set on revenge and begins working with the corrupt and misogynistic Justice Department official Paul Krendler (Ray Liotta) to capture him.

You can’t catch something without bait, though, and Verger has the perfect person in mind to fill that role: Special Agent Clarice Starling (Julianne Moore).
