Most popular foreign actor in China, mostly thanks to his appearance in Valter brani Sarajevo (1972). Every New Years' Eve this film can be seen on Chinese TV.

In 1990 elected for Serbian Parlament.

Ranked #6 in Serbian newspapers "Vecernje novosti" in «Best Serbian Actors & Actresses of XX Century» list. (December 2000).

On August 1993, he received Life Achievement Award "Slavica" for his roles in Yugoslav cinematography.

In addition to his native Serbian, he has acted in Croatian, Macedonian, Slovenian, Romani, Albanian, German, English, French, Italian and Russian.

Pictured on one of a set of eight 23d Serbian commemorative postage stamps celebrating Serbian actors and actresses, issued 27 March 2019. Stamps were issued in a single souvenir sheet. Others honored in this set were Ljubisa Samardzic, Mira Stupica, Slobodan Aligrudic, Predrag Lakovic, Sonja Savic, Milorad Mandic-Manda, and Nebojsa Glogovac.

For four years in a row, three films in which he starred were nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film (Three) (1966), Feather Gatherers (1967) and The Battle of the Neretva (1969).

Seven films in which he acted were in the official competition of the Cannes Film Festival: Train without a timetable (1959), A look into the pupil of the sun (1966), Feather gatherers (1967), It will be almost the end of the world (1969), Peasant Revolt 1573 1976), Group Portrait with a Lady (1977) and Special Treatment (1980).

In 1981, he was a member of the jury at the 12th International Film Festival in Moscow, Russia (Moscow International Film Festival).

He has two children, son Miljko (1961) who is attorney and film and TV producer and daughter Jelena (1964).
