Mentored several artists who went onto make long running popular manga serials, including Eiichirô Oda, creator of "One Piece" (1997-Present) and Hiroyuki Takei, creator of "Shaman King" (1998-2004).

On November 21, 2017, Watsuki Nobuhiro, real name Nishiwaki Nobuhiro, was indicted in Tokyo on charges of child pornography, after the police found DVDs containing naked girls under the age of 18. Since possession of child pornography had become illegal only in 2015 in Japan, the mangaka was summarily indicted on February 27, 2018 and fined ¥200.000 for the act of "simple possession of child pornography", according to Japanese law. He resumed his work with Jump Square on July 2018, which was on hiatus since December 4, 2017.
