Sing-a-longs are fun events that have been around for ages. Not only do they serve as a dose of nostalgia, jamming to your favorite tunes in a space with hundreds (or even thousands) of other fans in unison, but they're also simply a fun event to experience. Hollywood legend John Travolta shocked a capacity crowd at the Hollywood Bowl’s annual Grease Sing-a-Long on 27 June by walking onstage in full Danny Zuko regalia—black leather jacket, cuffed jeans and a carefully coiffed wig—after spending weeks keeping the cameo secret from both organisers and former co-stars.

The 70-year-old actor greeted original castmates Didi Conn, Barry Pearl, Michael Tucci and Kelly Ward with hugs before leading the audience in a raucous “We Go Together” chant. “No one knew. Not even the cast,” he later wrote on Instagram, posting video of the moment to his 6.6 million followers.

Social-media footage shows the sing-along screening briefly pausing as fans erupted in cheers; Entertainment Weekly likened the reaction to “lightning in a bottle.” The Bowl’s outdoor movie night, hosted each summer since 2005, invites patrons to dress as T-Birds or Pink Ladies and belt lyrics projected beneath the shell’s iconic arches.

Grease premiered in 1978, and its popularity is still high today, 47 years later. The iconic musical starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John started a franchise that led to a sequel, a prequel series, and an upcoming film, Summer Lovin', currently in production.

Travolta, who rose to fame thanks to the role of the rebellious, bad boy Danny Zuko, is still hopelessly devoted to the role. In a new post on Instagram, the actor revealed he made a surprise appearance on Friday at a Grease sing-along at the Hollywood Bowl. The actor's appearance wasn't complete without a Danny Zuko-approved leather jacket.

Fans at the Grease Sing-a-Long screening at the Hollywood Bowl last night got a surprise when the original Danny Zuko strutted out onstage.

John Travolta posted a photo of himself in character and a video as he entered — wearing a blond wig — from stage right. The star got a standing ovation from the crowd.

He then led the assembled fans in a collective “wop-bop-a-loo-bop” before shouting, “Enjoy the show. We love you!”

Travolta noted in his post that “no one knew” he would be there, not even those already assembled on stage, which including director Randal Kleiser and castmembers Barry Pearl, Didi Conn, Kelly Ward and Michael Tucci.

“Tonight at the Hollywood Bowl, for the first time I surprised everyone at the Grease Sing-a-Long and dressed up as Danny Zuko. No one knew. Not even the cast. Thank you for a great evening,” he wrote.

John Travolta showed up in full Danny Zuko garb during the Grease screening, surprising not just the crowd of thousands but his fellow castmates from the 1978 film. According to People, these included T-Birds Barry Pearl (Doody), Michael Tucci (Sonny) and Kelly Ward (Putzie), alongside Pink Lady Didi Conn (Frenchy). Also in attendance was Randal Kleiser, who made his directorial debut with Grease.

Travolta would later take to social media to share his gratitude over the moment, posting a pic of himself as Zuko and writing, “Tonight at the Hollywood Bowl, for the first time I surprised everyone at the Grease Sing-a-Long and dressed up as Danny Zuko. John Travolta made a surprise appearance at Friday night’s “Grease” sing-a-long at the Hollywood Bowl dressed as his iconic drag racing, hip swinging 1950s bad boy Danny Zuko.

“Tonight at the Hollywood Bowl, for the first time I surprised everyone at the ‘Grease’ Sing-a-Long and dressed up as Danny Zuko,” Travolta wrote in an Instagram post Saturday, sharing a video of his appearance. “No one knew. Not even the cast. Thank you for a great evening.”

In the video, Travolta swaggered on stage as the leather-clad greaser, as the packed Hollywood Bowl erupted in cheers. Travolta then greeted the other original cast members on stage, who were stunned themselves to see him, before addressing the crowd.

“L.A! I thought you were going back to Australia?” Travolta joked, referencing the iconic line from the classic movie musical.

The team behind the ‘Life After Movies’ documentary series are back, and this time they are bringing to life the story of the much-beloved musical ‘Grease’ with the latest doc ‘Life After Grease.’

The doc is the latest feature in the ‘Life After Movies’ series. With more interviews shot beyond this teaser, and more to go, ‘Life After Grease’ will celebrate Randal Kleiser’s 1978 classic starring Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta. Filmmaker Lisa Downs has gradually been building up quite the collection of movie nerd documentaries. She’s made Life After Flash, Life After The Navigator and Life After The Neverending Story to date, where she tracks down those involved in Flash Gordon, Flight Of The Navigator and The Neverending Story and brings their stories up to date.

Her next project? Life After Grease, which – as the title suggests – sees her talking to those involved in the movie, and capturing their stories. She’s already got Grease director Randal Kleiser involved, and has filmed interviews with assorted members of the cast and crew.

There are still some interviews to capture, and the film to edit into shape, and so Lisa – as an independent filmmaker – has launched a Kickstarter...

After purchasing Olivia Newton-John's black leather jacket she wore in Grease for $243,200, an anonymous man turned right around and gave the prop back to the legendary actress and singer. Recently, Newton-John had auctioned off the jacket for charity to raise money for her cancer center, and probably thought that was the last she'd see of it.

Scheduled to air live during 2015 and featuring a young ensemble cast, Grease Live (wt) will reintroduce the great music and timeless story to an entirely new generation.

Based on the 1971 Broadway musical of the same name with book, lyrics and music by the legendary team of Warren Casey and Jim Jacobs, the 1978 hit film Grease, starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, grossed nearly $400 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing movie musical ever.

Executive producer and supervising animator Glen Keane talks Tangled

Tangled will hit the shelves on Blu-ray and DVD on March 29, which is a landmark release because Tangled is the Walt Disney Pictures' 50th animated movie. One of the driving forces behind this new spin on the Rapunzel tale is Glen Keane, who served as both the supervising animator and executive producer. Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment recently held a virtual roundtable junket with Glen Keane, to discuss his experiences working on Tangled. Here's what he had to say below.

How did you reach the amazing "organic quality" in terms of the character animation.? Did you have any special tools/techniques to improve that effect, or is it in the end just the hard work of the artists?

Glen Keane: For me it was very important to find what I call "bridge people." These are people who understand computer and hand drawn animation.

Like the roundtable Q & A posted earlier with the directors of Disney’s 50th animated film, Tangled, we were given another great opportunity to talk to someone involved with the film. In the late 70s, a TV director made his feature film directorial debut with a little musical that ended up changing the game as we know it. In 1978, Randal Kleiser's Grease was unleashed on the world and it was a smashing success. The film took in just shy of $160 million at the domestic box office which, if you count the nearly $30 million it took in during re-releases and adjust for inflation, would equate to $611.5 million today. The Big Red One: The Reconstruction is director Samuel Fuller’s (Fixed Bayonets, The Steel Helmet, Merrill’s Marauders) autobiographical account of his experiences with the legendary 1st U.S. infantry division throughout World War II. Lee Marvin leads the cast of raw recruits which include Griff (Mark Hamill, fresh from success in Star Wars), Zab (Robert Carradine, who doubles as Fuller and the film’s narrator), Vinci (Bobby Di Cicco), Kaiser (Perry Lang), and Johnson (Kelly Ward).

This version of the 1980 film was released several years following Fuller’s death, which was in 1997, as a tribute to his lasting work and the version he intended his audiences to see. When this version was released in early 2005, I was overjoyed to see the original forty seven minutes which Fuller was forced to cut by the Warner Bros. executives.
