On May 22, 2017, Universal unveiled its Dark Universe, a new, interconnected series of movies based on the studio’s beloved stable of classic movie monsters. They even released a photo, which looked real enough until you started to see the seams, with Johnny Depp (set to play the Invisible Man); Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde (Russell Crowe); Frankenstein’s Monster (Javier Bardem); along with Tom Cruise and Sofia Boutella, both mummies and both stars of “The Mummy,” which was set to open later that same summer and kick off the shared, monster-filled universe.

Since there had been no mention of Marvel's First Family in the almost two-decade history of the MCU, fans had assumed that Marvel Studios' Fantastic Four reboot, now titled The Fantastic Four: First Steps, would most likely be set in an alternate universe when it was first announced.
Kevin Feige would later confirm that Reed, Sue, Johnny and Ben would indeed be introduced in a different part of the Multiverse, and we may now know exactly which Earth they will hail from.
Spoilers follow.
According to scooper Mttsh, First Steps "will be set in Universe 828."
This designation has yet to be established in the MCU or in the comic books, but if it sounds familiar, it's probably because Stephen Strange and America Chavez paid a visit to Earth 838 in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. There's been some confusion about this online, but it wouldn't make much sense for...

As expected, Marvel Studios debuted another teaser for The Fantastic Four: First Steps during game 4 of the NBA Western Conference Finals last night, even though it wasn't exactly the new look at the MCU reboot fans were hoping for.
The spot reuses and mixes around a lot of footage from the recent full trailer, but there are a couple of new shots in there.
In addition to a quick glimpse of Galactus' immense shadow looming over the city, we see Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby) watching H.E.R.B.I.E. the robot flying towards what appears to be the Fantasticar launch pad we saw in that first batch of set photos.
Prior to First Steps entering production, we heard that the Invisible Woman was going to be the main focus of the movie. We're sure the other members of the team won't be given short shrift, but the story...

Though we still don't have confirmation, a new look at Marvel Studios' The Fantastic Four: First Steps is expected to air during game 4 of the NBA Western Conference Finals later tonight.
Whether it'll take the form of a full teaser, new clip or just another one of the tie-in adverts we've been seeing remains to be seen. For now, we have another promo featuring Marvel's First Family settling down to watch the game.
It looks like this is a mixture of actual footage from the movie and scenes filmed specifically for these NBA teasers, but the editing is pretty seamless to be fair.
We also have some new quotes from Joseph Quinn (Johnny Storm) from an interview with Esquire. The Stranger Things alum is looking forward to meeting back up with his First Steps cast-mates - and working with Robert Downey Jr. - when they return for Avengers: Doomsday.
“Thankfully,...

Marvel Studios has shared a new teaser promo for The Fantastic Four: First Steps as part of a promotional campaign for the NBA Western Conference Finals.
The brief clip finds Reed Richards, Sue Storm and Johnny Storm making their way to the top of the Baxter Building, where Ben Grimm and H.E.R.B.I.E. are busy preparing dinner. Johnny is eager to catch the start of the game, and considers "flaming on" to fly ahead of his teammates.
There's speculation that a new trailer might be released during tonight's game, but this has yet to be confirmed.
Check out the clip below, and we'll be sure to update if we find out more.

Some new promo art for Marvel Studios' The Fantastic Four: First Steps has been revealed on a tie-in Trix cereal box, with H.E.R.B.I.E. on the front, and cartoonish depictions of Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Human Torch, and The Thing on the back.
The box also comes with a "hidden message decoder," but the text doesn't reveal anything about the movie, and simply reads: "You're the best of us."
Ebon Moss-Bachrach was asked about his take on Ben Grimm during an interview with Financial Times, and it sounds like The Bear star was at least partially drawn to the role because it meant he could disappear into the character and bring him to life via motion-capture.
“I would say maybe he just has a sort of rock exterior, but he’s a very human person,” says the actor. “That was definitely one of the attractive things about this job,...

Universal’s innovative new theme park, Epic Universe, is officially now open in Orlando, Florida, and welcoming guests to explore five exciting new lands. One of which is Dark Universe, the highly detailed realm featuring Universal Classic Monsters.
Compared to its counterparts, the gothic village of Darkmoor makes for one of the smaller lands available to explore. But what it lacks in square footage, it more than makes up for in its impressive level of immersion. Every detail matters, from shops to interactive taverns, in Dark Universe’s epic lore and storytelling centered around Dr. Victoria Frankenstein and Universal’s best dark ride to date: Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment.

We got a first look at Funko's initial wave of POPs for The Fantastic Four: First Steps (beware of spoilers for one particular character below) earlier today, and thanks to some new images, we now have a glimpse of the 6-inch Galactus Pop.
Aside from a couple of obscured shots in the trailers and some blurry promo art, we have yet to get a proper look at this first comic-accurate (he did appear as a cloud in Fox's Fantastic Four sequel) take on the Devourer of Worlds, who will be played/voiced by Ralph Ineson.
Though this Pop is obviously not the most detailed representation of how the powerful villain will be depicted in the movie, it does give us our best look yet at the finer points of the costume and overall character design.
"I’m not someone who knows the whole lore of Marvel," Ineson admitted during a 2024 interview.

The early aughts launched a wave of horror remakes, but they’re especially known as an era full of American remakes of Japanese horror classics. One such adaptation is Takashi Shimizu‘s 2004 film, The Grudge, based on the Japanese film Ju-On: The Grudge, which Shimizu directed in 2002. It’s not often the original director is brought on for the American adaptation, so this is a fascinating film even for just that reason.
In the film, “An American nurse living and working in Tokyo is exposed to a mysterious supernatural curse, one that locks a person in a powerful rage before claiming their life and spreading to another victim.“
The Grudge stars horror icon Sarah Michelle Gellar, as well as Jason Behr (Roswell) and Clea DuVall (The Faculty). It was a massive hit upon release, raking in a reported $187.3 million on a $10 million budget. It was released when I was a kid,...

Emmy nominee Paul Feig has had no shortage of work over the past few years, between his John Cena and Awkwafina team-up Jackpot! at Prime Video, Netflix's starry The School for Good and Evil, and now Another Simple Favor, the sequel to his 2018 dark comedy thriller starring Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick. However, one script from recent memory that ultimately went unmade is still on his mind — Dark Army. Announced back in 2019, the film would've pulled from Universal's roster of classic monsters and featured some of the Bridesmaids director's original creations in a tribute to older James Whale movies. Years of attempts to get the project off the ground didn't bear fruit for numerous reasons, though, and now he's speaking out about the film and what kept the ambitious project from marching forward.

Werewolves can have a unique routine. Some like to stalk the moors in search of victims, while others aim to draw in large audiences on streaming platforms. Leigh Whannell and Blumhouse’s Wolf Man (2025) clawed into Peacock's top streaming rankings, as the film is reaching the audience it missed in theaters, proving it has (furry) legs.
A second chance to howl
The moderately budgeted Blumhouse lycanthrope film performed modestly at the box office, showing that the curse of the Wolf Man isn’t the dangers of the full moon, but the inability to become a top-tier horror movie franchise. The Wolfman (2010) was an enjoyable, albeit uneven, remake of the original Universal Pictures classic, but the concept wasn’t appealing enough to a wide audience to break even. Plans for future films ended. Blumhouse likely figured a lower-budgeted movie could do better.

Unfortunately, Leigh Whannell's film Wolf Mankicked off 2025 not with a howl, but a whimper. After reimagining one Universal Monster icon with 2020's The Invisible Man, the Saw writer took on another ambitious reboot with Wolf Man. The film experienced several delays and cast changes, with Ryan Gosling initially attached to star in the titular role before being replaced by Christopher Abbott. Eventually, Whannell's film saw the light of day, although its short theatrical run was considered a box office flop. Despite its financial struggles in theaters, the movie is now finding a second life on streaming platforms.
Wolf Man made its debut on Peacock on April 18 and has climbed the ranks of the top 10 chart on the streaming service, at one point hitting the number one spot. Leigh Whannell, the writer behind the first three Saw features and the first two Insidiousmovies, has cemented his reputation as a great, creative figure in the horror world. He made his directorial debut with Insidious: Chapter 3 in 2015 and later delivered the highly underrated action-horror film Upgradein 2018. In 2020, Whannell released The Invisible Man, which quickly became one of the most acclaimed horror films in recent years. So, expectations for his next project were reasonably high. However, his recent project, Wolf Man, failed to live up to the legacy of his earlier works. Apart from receiving unfavorable feedback from critics and audiences alike, it also fell short at the box office. Luckily, the film seems to have found the right audience and has even claimed the top spot in Peacock's streaming charts, just a few days after it debuted on the platform on April 18.

David F. Sandberg burst onto the horror scene in 2016 with Lights Out. This original film surprised everyone with its storytelling but truly impressed on a technical level, thanks to the filmmaker’s outstanding creativity in crafting suspenseful sequences marked by immersive lighting design and incredibly effective jump scares. Sandberg proved that his debut wasn’t a one-off feat of excellent cinema, following it up with Annabelle: Creation, and after a less consistent detour into the world of superheroes, the director now returns to the genre where he has always shone with Until Dawn.

Writer and director Leigh Whannell has had an impressive streak in filmography over the past few years. Besides boasting influential and successful screenwriting credits on films like the first three original Sawmovies and the first two Insidious movies, Whannell has also directed some unique (and violent) films. The director would turn his attention to a classic Universal Monsters IP in 2020, writing and directing The Invisible Man reboot for Universal and Blumhouse. His latest monster movie, Wolf Man, is now headed to streaming after being chewed up in theaters.

Ready to howl at the moon from the comfort of your couch? Wolf Man is clawing its way onto streaming, and it’s not your average werewolf flick. This 2025 horror reboot takes a big bite out of the genre, with Saw writer Leigh Whannell sinking his teeth into the director’s chair.

While the box office wasn’t exactly howling in delight, the film boasts a sharp cast and a darker, moodier vibe than your typical monster mash. If you missed it in theaters (or just prefer not to be scared in public...

Universal Pictures owns the rights to some of the most iconic villains, which the studio named the "Universal Monsters." However, it has yet to find its rhythm with the recent adaptations.
Universal was planning to launch the Dark Universe, which was set to debut with 2017's The Mummy, and create an McU-like joint universe that would feature characters like Wolf Man, Dracula, The Invisible Man, and more. However, following the release of The Mummy and its poor reception, Universal canceled the universe. Fright-Rags has added three Universal Monsters to its mini mask line: Frankenstein, The Wolf Man, and Creature from the Black Lagoon.
Sculpted by John Tatarelli Jr., the vintage-inspired vacuform plastic masks are approximately 5.5″ tall and 4″ wide — about half the size of a classic mask.
They’re packaged in retro-style display boxes designed by Kyle Crawford that measure 6.75″ high, 5.5″ wide, and 2.75″ deep.
Each limited edition collectible costs $20.
Boris Karloff stomped into the role of The Monster in 1931’s Frankenstein, Lon Chaney Jr. transformed for the part of Larry Talbot in 1941’s The Wolfman, and the Gill Man in 1954’s Creature from the Black Lagoon was played by Ben Chapman on land and by Ricou Browning underwater.

The new take on The Wolf Man has scored a streaming date on Peacock. The horror story directed by Leigh Whannellwill be making its way to the streaming platform on April 18. Three months after the Blumhouse production hit the big screen, audiences will be able to experience the frights in the comfort of their homes. Wolf Man was yet another chapter in the history of Universal bringing their classic horror icons back for new stories meant to make a young generation of viewers fall in love with the genre. And it all begins with a terrible curse that can be transmitted from one host to another.
Wolf Man follows Blake (Christopher Abbott) and Charlotte Lovell (Julia Garner). The couple is attempting to raise their daughter in peace, when they learn about a strange creature lurking in the woods. Blake and Charlotte's marriage was headed towards disaster by the time the movie begins.

When Robert Egger's Nosferatu hit theaters, it did more than bring a classic horror monster back into the mainstream. It also brought back a love of gothic horror that hadn't been seen since the '90s, as well as a love for all things classic and vampire. Aside from that, Universal's Epic Universe has done something similar with its Universal Monsters-centric Dark Universe. With all that in mind, it's clear that the world is in a state where gothic and vampiric horror have reached a new high and there are even more chances to capitalize on the idea.
It's no secret that the original 1922 Nosferatu was an unauthorized remake of Dracula that was nearly lost to time after every copy was almost destroyed.

Not all of the classic Universal Monsters were based on classic stories. While Frankenstein and Dracula came from the minds of Mary Shelley and Bram Stoker, The Wolfman, and previously Werewolf of London, was based on folklore dating back centuries rather than fiction. While the character has had a hard time coming back into the limelight with the disappointing Wolfman from 2010 and even more disappointing Wolf Man from 2025, the myth has done well for itself even while not being as in the public favor as the Zombie or Vampire. Those original films may not be based on books but that didn’t stop writers from creating their own stories or studios from adapting them. This includes the likes of Hammer Studios Curse of the Werewolf being adapted from The Werewolf of Paris and The Wolfen getting turned into the 1981 movie Wolfen. Speaking of 1981, there were two other rather small werewolf...

Following a successful reinvention of The Invisible Man, writer-director Leigh Whannell set his sights on another classic Universal monster with Wolf Man.
Among the special features on the newly released physical media editions is an audio commentary by the ever-jovial Whannell, with much of the insight directed toward aspiring filmmakers.
Here are nine things I learned from the Wolf Man commentary track…
1. Blue Velvet influenced the opening shot.
The opening shot of the movie, in which ants attack a wasp, proved to be difficult both logistically and practically.
“Quite difficult to wrangle insects. We had to get an insect wrangler in New Zealand,” which stood in for Oregon. “And of course, these ants are attacking this wasp, but this wasp has to live. You have to free the wasp. It was definitely one of those shots that you have to fight for in a movie.”

The Universal Monsters have seen a resurgence of sorts on the big screen in the last half decade, with remakes like The Invisible Man and Wolf Man terrifying audiences alongside reimaginings like Renfield and Abigail. With that have come new collectibles from the likes of Funko and Neca. This has all helped introduce a new generation of fans to these classic horror villains. However, while popular characters like Dracula and Frankenstein's Monster have gotten most of the spotlight, one of the more underrated gems from that gothic era was the Creature From the Black Lagoon. Now, after 70 years, the 1954 creature feature is getting some scaly love from Mondo with a new haunting figure.

The first look features merchandise from the “How To Train Your Dragon” Isle of Berk, the Wizarding World of Harry Potter’s Ministry of Magic attraction, Universal Monsters Dark Universe, and Mario and friends from Super Nintendo World.
Isle of Berk
Based on the popular “How To Train Your Dragon” IP.
This area is huge. It’s easily the size of two lands and will be amazing! The merchandise is just as amazing and what I’m looking forward to the most! Plus my daughter is going to flip over it.
The Loungefly bags are fantastic!
First up, we have some cute pillows, bags, a t-shirt, and plush based on various dragon characters from the films.
The Deadly Nadder is featured on the shirt. I love the 90s feel it has.

After such high-profile flops as 2010’s The Wolfman and 2017’s The Mummy, the latter of which failed to launch Universal Pictures’s intended Dark Universe franchise, came a rare standout amid the studio’s ongoing project of rebooting its classic horror movies: Leigh Wannell’s The Invisible Man, which reframed the 1933 film (based on H.G. Wells’s novel) as an extreme case of stalking and gaslighting. While this ostensibly feminist spin on the story earned the film some appreciation, its pointed topicality was less compelling than Wannell’s masterful orchestration of suspense and, during the middle stretch, use of a single location.
Now, Wannell has been given the reins to Wolf Man, nominally based on the 1941 version with Lon Chaney Jr. that, along with its sequels, proved to be one of the most influential entries in Universal’s monster cycle. As with The Invisible Man, there isn’t much tying...

It's hard to find a studio that isn't dying to get their own hit crossover film nowadays, especially when compared to the likes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and its numerous successes. Blumhouse’s reinvention of Wolf Man is set to tear onto 4K Uhd, Blu-ray, and DVD on 21st April 2025, bringing Leigh Whannell’s modern take on the iconic Universal monster straight to home audiences. Dubbed “a frightening and heartrending new horror take” by Total Film, and compared to The Shining and The Howling by The Telegraph this gripping new vision blends psychological dread with brutal creature horror. It even managed to score four stars in our review upon release.
Directed by The Invisible Man’s Leigh Whannell, Wolf Man follows Blake (Christopher Abbott), a man seeking a fresh start as he moves his wife Charlotte (Julia Garner) and daughter Ginger (Matilda Firth) back to his childhood home in Oregon. Their attempt at a quiet new life is shattered by a savage animal attack, forcing the family to barricade themselves inside as something lurks in the shadows. As the night drags on,...

New films are commonly being shuttled off to home formats within days of appearing in cinemas. Here’s where we are in 2025…

They discussed the elements of the film that stood out to them, and how they developed Eli's character before dropping him into his father Gabe's twisted world. Plus, they dished on working with Chicago Fire star Dermot Mulroney,...

Miles Teller is doing the press rounds to promote his new genre-mashup, The Gorge, and with the first trailer for Marvel Studios' Fantastic Four: First Steps hitting last week, questions inevitably turned to the actor's role as Reed Richards in 20th Century Fox's Fant4stic.
Josh Trank's Ff movie was a notorious bomb, and not something the director or cast have been particularly enthusiastic to discuss over the years.
As you might expect, Teller wasn't too eager to talk about his brief tenure as Mr. Fantastic while chatting to THR, but he did reveal that he watched the trailer for the MCU reboot, and is excited to see the movie later this year.
“I don’t wish anybody to be a part of a bomb … I just wish them the best," Teller said. "I saw the little trailer and I thought it looked fantastic, I’m very excited for them.

Few literary characters have left as lasting an impact on sci-fi and horror cinema as Frankenstein's monster. Since Mary Shelley first unleashed her tragic creation onto the world in 1818, filmmakers have happily taken on its themes of hubris and the blurred line between life and death. Over the decades, Frankenstein has been adapted, reimagined, and parodied in countless ways, with some versions staying true to Shelley's original vision and others taking creative liberties that reshape the story entirely.
In fact, the story is a perfect archetype for all kinds of interpretations. With two major adaptations on the horizon -- Guillermo del Toro's long-awaited take and Maggie Gyllenhaal's unique reimagining -- now is the perfect time to revisit the best Frankenstein movies ever made. From classic Universal horror to modern reinterpretations, these ten films prove that Frankenstein’s monster is truly immortal.

Clowns have been known for being more frightening than funny for the longest time in the horror genre. There is a reason why the fear of clowns has its own term, "coulrophobia." What was once a cheerful figure with a big red nose and balloon animal artistry that served as entertainment for children's birthday parties has morphed into an evil monster with a talent for terror. The mention of clowns in horror conjures up popular picks like Stephen King's iconic Pennywise and, more recently, Art the Clown, and while these infamous figures are frightening, there are far more clowns to fear in the genre.
The It and Terrifier movies will scratch that clown horror itch, but there are so many underrated horror movies with clowns that are just as scary and perhaps even a little silly. When looking for actual scares, The Houses October Built and Clown are excellent...

Quick LinksWolf Man 2025 Had a Much Different Rumored DirectionThis Unused Horror Remake Script Was Perfect for Analog HorrorRyan Gosling's Wolf Man Had a Much Better Design
The 2025 remake of Wolf Manhas been out for a few weeks in theaters, but moviegoers and critics alike haven't been howling its praises. The movie received a mixed reception at best, and its box office intake so far is perhaps even worse. Already available for digital download, the movie's quality is made disappointing given what could have been.
Originally, Ryan Gosling was attached to star in the 2025 Wolf Man remake, and the plot was much different. This direction could have tied into an increasingly popular horror subgenre, namely one with a lot of marketing cache with younger viewers. Add in what could have been a far more impressive werewolf design, and the unmade film makes the finished product an even bigger silver bullet to the genre.
