- Pictured with Don Miller, Elmer Layden, and Jim Crowley on one of fifteen 32¢ US commemorative postage stamps in the "Celebrate the Century" series, issued 28 May 1998, celebrating the 1920s. Together they were known as the "Four Horsemen of Notre Dame".

- Played in one game in the National Football League, as a tailback with the Brooklyn Lions in 1926, their only season in the league.
- Inducted into the Madison (Wisconsin) Sports Hall of Fame in 1966.
- Head football coach at Villanova University (1925-1935) and University of Wisconsin (1936-1948).
- Inducted into the University of Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame in 1994.
- Inducted into the Stark County [Ohio] High School Football Hall of Fame in 2002 (inaugural class).
- Inducted into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame in 2016.
