John Wesley Shipp in The Flash (2014)

John Wesley Shipp

Discussion: Who Do You Think Is The Best Live-Action Flash?
Image
Barry Allen's version of The Flash has had quite a few live-action interpretations, but unlike fellow DC crimefighters like Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman, very few of his entertainment ventures have become mainstream.

In total, there are three live-action versions of the character that have hit it big with audiences: 1990's The Flash TV series starring John Wesley Shipp; 2014's The Flash TV show, starring Grant Gustin, and the Dceu version played by Ezra Miller, who appeared n 2016's Suicide Squad, Justice League, Zack Snyder's Justice League, Peacemaker and his own standalone film, 2023's The Flash.

The fact that there are only three versios of him that have reached mainstream success got me thinking about who the best adaptation of Barry Allen might be. So, I wanted to turn the question to you. Who is your favorite live-action Flash? To keep things interesting, every single live-action take on the character counts.

Image
The CW's The Flashhas had many surprising things happen throughout its nine seasons. Now, its stars have revealed some things they did not see coming in the fan-favorite Arrowverse series.

Grant Gustin, Carlos Valdes, and John Wesley Shipp were part of The Flash's MegaCon panel, and the trio each responded to Cbr's question about what surprised them most in the show. "I didn't know I would be Savitar," the Flash/Barry Allen actor said about Season 3's big bad.Savitar was a god-like speedster with a grudge against Barry. He tormented the hero and even murdered his future wife, Iris West. It is eventually revealed that Savitar is indeed an evil, scarred version of Gustin's superhero in full embrace of his dark side.

The Flash Star John Wesley Shipp Recalls 'Immediate Connection' With Grant Gustin
Image
The CW's The Flash Star John Wesley Shipp has talked about the immediate connection he had with his co-star and fellow Barry Allen actor Grant Gustin. Shipp starred as the titular DC character in 1990's The Flash CBS series before returning to play Gustin's father, Henry Allen, in the Arrowverse.

The Flash franchise veteran Shipp discussed the length of his tenure as the Scarlet Speedster and his relationship with his co-star Gustin at Megacon. In response to Cbr's question about how long he has been involved with the character, he stated, "35 years. As many years as Grant Gustin has been alive." Shipp continued, "It was an immediate connection. This is a guy who's a truthful actor. He knew I'd been the Flash, and I knew what he was taking on." In addition to playing Barry Allen in CBS' The Flash and Henry Allen in The CW's iteration, Shipp also starred as Jay Garrick,...

Chad Michael Murray's 10 Best Movies And TV Shows
Image
The best Chad Michael Murray movies and TV shows include a mix of young adult releases, and in recent years, more adult drama fare. Murray got his start as an actor after he graduated from high school and won a modeling scholarship, which helped him pick up an agent. He moved to California and quickly earned a role in the MTV drama series Undressed. This helped lead to his breakout role on The Gilmore Girls as Tristin DuGray.

After another recurring role in Dawson’s Creek, Murray’s popularity exploded when he grabbed one of the leading roles in One Tree Hill. This also led to several film roles, mostly in young adult movies like Freaky Friday and A Cinderella Story. He hasn’t slowed down since aging out of many of those young adult releases, earning some great roles in movies like Fruitvale Station and TV shows like Marvel’s Agent Carter and Sullivan’s Crossing.

DC characters we want to see in a potential Injustice 3
Image
There are many things that DC Comics fans are longing for, but a third Injustice video game is definitely on that list. It's something we've been discussing since completing Injustice 2 and, with that having come out in 2017, it's been some time indeed.

With that in mind, let's do some more theorizing, this time about which characters could appear in Injustice 3 if it happens. To be honest, there are so many DC characters that haven't been used in the Injustice games that it would be impossible to list them all, so let's look at some of the ones that I want to see the most and the ones that fans have been clamoring over for years.

Magical characters

Let's begin by talking about the magical characters of the DC Universe, because most of them haven't received much attention in these games. While characters like Swamp Thing and Shazam were playable characters in the previous games,...

During the DC Comics crossover Absolute Power, Amanda Waller made the world think heroes were committing crimes worldwide. Then, her Task Force VII stole powers from heroes and villains across Earth Prime and kept them for themselves. With Nightwing leading, the heroes attacked Waller and took their planet back.

Now that the series is over, here's everything you need to know about the finale of Absolute Power and how it affects DC Comics.

Grant Gustin's version of The Flash movie comes to life in a stunning DC concept trailer. 2023 marked the worst year for the Dceu movie timeline as Warner Bros. Discovery had several box office disappointments with their final films in the franchise. The Arrowverse is already having a huge say in the careers of actors like Grant Gustin and Melissa Benoist. Many actors will forever be known for their Arrowverse work. The impact that key characters had on fans should not be overlooked.

At one point, Arrowverse actors should return to DC in the same or different roles as legacy actors. Look at the return of John Wesley Shipp in The Flash, as well as Helen Slater and Teri Hatcher in Supergirl. They are examples of great actors who had past roles in DC and returned to the world after a long time off.

Christopher Reeve's Superman & Michael Keaton's Batman Are Joined By A Full '90s Justice League In Epic DC Art
Image
Fan art imagines a 1990s Justice League team-up with Reeve's Superman and Keaton's Batman alongside other iconic heroes. Modern DC live-action projects pay tribute to 90s Justice League actors like Shipp and Reeve through different roles. Keaton's Batman returned in The Flash movie, hinting at potential legacy tributes to remaining 90s Justice League stars.

Michael Keaton's Batman joins forces with Christopher Reeve's Superman, as part of a major Justice League team set in the 1990s through new DC fan art. Before the Dceu movie timeline, there had been a number of different Justice League heroes portrayed on the big and small screens. Throughout the late 1980s into the 1990s, multiple beloved superheroes from the iconic DC team were depicted in live-action despite never crossing paths, as they all existed in separate universes.

Had the superhero landscape looked like what it does today back in the 1990s,...

“They don’t want the competition”: One DC Show Destroyed All Plans for a ’90s Daredevil Series Starring Lotr’s John Rhys-Davies as The Kingpin

1989’s The Trial of the Incredible Hulk was a made-for-television movie that served as a backdoor pilot for a Daredevil television series. The film also introduced viewers to Matt Murdock / Daredevil and Wilson Fisk / Kingpin. However, before they could go on to headline their own series, plans were scrapped for an unexpected reason.

According to actor Rex Smith, who played Daredevil in the movie, there was every intention for the backdoor pilot to expand into a television series. 90s Sci-Fi TV Shows With Awful Reviews That Are Actually Worth Watching
Image
We live in a golden era of sci-fi on TV, where "Star Trek" and "Star Wars" come in multiple flavors, "Stranger Things" is an event every season, and the CW recently wrapped up an entire universe of DC Comics superheroes on the small screen. Fortunately for all sci-fi fans, this is a time where the people who make such shows grew up loving them, and critics who review them were raised on the concepts and get it. This is all a relatively new phenomenon.

As recently as the '90s, TV critics weren't necessarily big on high-concept sci-fi, and the people making these shows didn't always know what they were doing either. Even if they did, producers over their heads weren't necessarily making the best decisions either. Superheroes on TV were entirely different three decades ago, and the weekly format was just discovering the notion of season-long arcs. There were growing pains to be sure,...

James Van Der Beek, Kerr Smith Recall Dangerous Jet Ski Incidents While Filming ‘Dawson’s Creek’

James Van Der Beek and Kerr Smith are looking back at filming Dawson’s Creek and recalled some death-defying experiences they had on jet skis at the time.

This week, the two actors told People magazine at 90s Con in Hartford, Connecticut, that things would sometimes get a bit wild behind the scenes of the hit teen drama when they were filming in Wilmington, North Carolina.

“A couple of the guys on the crew had boats and you know we had the guest stars come in and the writers come in every episode and we would take them out on the water on the weekends,” Smith, who played Jack McPhee, recalled. “We’d stop and eat crab in the morning yet. And we’d fill up the boats with whatever we needed. We would barbecue out on the island. We all had jet skis.”

Grant Gustin’s DC Return Could Be As The Flash (But Not The One You Think)
Image
Gustin had a successful run as The Flash in the Arrowverse, ending after nine seasons and multiple crossovers. Despite not appearing in The Flash movie, Gustin's chances of joining the new DC Universe have increased. Gustin could potentially return as Jay Garrick or play Reverse-Flash in a new DC Universe role.

Grant Gustin's chances of joining the new DC Universe just received a boost, and he could be perfect as a different version of the hero he played for years in The Flash. Gustin became famous worldwide for giving life to Barry Allen in the Arrowverse. The star debuted in a guest role in Arrow season 2, which helped set up the Arrowverse's main superhero friendship — between Stephen Amell's Oliver Queen and Gustin's Barry Allen — before the actor led The Flash's nine seasons. Not only did The Flash become the Arrowverse's longest-running series, but The Flash season 9 ended the universe.

Blue Beetle Nails a Vital Part of DC Comics That Other Movies Didn’t
Image
This Blue Beetle article contains spoilers.

At the start of Blue Beetle’s second act, protagonist Jaime Reyes (Xolo Maridueña) asks an important question: “Who the hell was Blue Beetle?”

A lot of viewers wondered the same thing when the Warner Bros. movie came to theaters earlier this year and they’ll likely be asking it again now that the movie is streaming on Max. People don’t ask that same question of Superman, Batman, or Wonder Woman, but not because Blue Beetle is at best a C-lister in the DC Comics bullpen. Rather it’s because the man behind the Blue Beetle mask has changed several times since Charles Nicholas Wojtkoski debuted the character in 1939.

The big-screen adaptation introduces Blue Beetle as Jaime Reyes, who is a recent college grad forced to the superhero identity after receiving an alien scarab from Jenny Kord (Bruna Marquezine), the daughter of inventor Ted Kord,...

Modern TV Superhero Series Were Always Doomed
Image
Canceled high-profile superhero properties is as much a part the history of Marvel and DC as are the billion-dollar, 20-part franchises. Daredevil is but one example in a long line of shows failing to meet expectations. Furthermore, Secret Invasion’s abysmal performance is not so strange either. For past generations of comic fans, any opportunity to see their neglected favorite Marvel or DC character on-screen was a gargantuan deal — it's hard to stress how rare and special it was. If you are under 30, you don’t remember how shocking it was to see Nick Fury on primetime network TV in 1998, or how painful it was to see the back-door pilot fail. Superheroes on television were, in many ways, harmed by billion-dollar blockbusters more than they were helped. The McU's Infinity Saga set the bar for what we expect and demand way too high for anyone on a TV budget to deliver.

Review: The Flash: The Complete Ninth and Final Season
Image
The Flash arrived on the CW as an antidote to the heavy, bleak world of Arrow. Our Scarlet Speedster was going to be a bright, upbeat superhero series and it was—at first. With each successive season, it grew bleaker and more chaotic as an overstuffed cast all demanded screentime and the writing staff never seemed to grasp that there were other villains than those connected to the Speed Force.

The 2022-23 television season brought us The Flash’s ninth and final season, providing a chance to give closure to the core characters. Tomorrow, Warner Home Entertainment releases The Flash: The Complete Ninth and Final Season.

Across the truncated season, everyone had a moment to shine, get their due, take a bow and move aside so the Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) and Nora West Allen (Candice Patton) center got to have the last word as they finally welcomed Nora to the preset.

The Flash missed the chance to bring back Henry Cavill's Superman and Grant Gustin's Flash despite having a multiversal plot and numerous cameos from other characters. Henry Cavill's Superman only appears through CGI recreations, while Grant Gustin's Flash is completely absent from The Flash, despite their previous meeting in Crisis on Infinite Earths. Andy Muschietti explained that the decision to exclude more cameos was due to the large number of possibilities, but it could have been managed differently to include important characters like Gustin's Flash and Cavill's Superman.

The Flash wasted the perfect opportunity to bring back two fan-favorite DC actors. Thanks to its multiversal plot, The Flash had free rein when it came to cameos and supporting roles from other DC characters. Michael Keaton, Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, and even George Clooney reprised their DC roles for what looks to be the last time, as the...

‘The Flash’ Ending Explained: When Worlds Collide
Michael Keaton, Ezra Miller, and Sasha Calle in द फ़्लैश (2023)
“The Flash” has finally arrived.

After several attempts (this iteration of the character has been brewing since at least 2013) and substantial controversy, the scarlet speedster has arrived in theaters with an accompanying whirlwind of both excitement and hesitation. Borrowing loosely from the event comic series “Flashpoint,” “The Flash” stars Ezra Miller as Barry Allen, a crime lab technician and superhero (or “metahuman” in DC speak) who decides to go back in time and prevent his mother’s murder (and his father’s arrest for said murder) but winds up being knocked out of his timeline and into an alternate reality that is very, very wrong. In this reality he is younger, doesn’t have superpowers and might be helpless to stop an alien invasion led by Zod (Michael Shannon), since this world doesn’t have any metahumans.

Can he find that world’s heroes, save the day, and get back to his own realm?...

Ahead of the Aug. 29 Blu-ray and DVD release of The Flash Season 9, Cbr is exclusively presenting a deleted scene, showing Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) surrounded by those closest to him at the celebration for baby Nora West-Allen. The clip begins with Joe West (Jesse L. Martin), holding baby Nora, Barry and Harrison Wells (Tom Cavanagh) admiring the newest addition to The Flash family. They are then joined by Jay Garrick (John Wesley Shipp) and Dr. Joan Williams (Michelle Harrison) -- the Earth-3 doppelgangers of Barry's parents -- with the latter remarking to Barry that she "only wishes your parents were here to meet her [Nora]." After a brief look at Joe, Harrison, Jay and Joan -- who have all acted as parental figures to...

10 Things We Already Miss About The Flash & The Rest Of The Arrowverse
Image
The Arrowverse's crossovers created a greater sense of interconnectivity than the Dceu, with small-scale crossovers helping with worldbuilding. Grant Gustin's Flash costumes were some of the Arrowverse's best, designed to work in action and often comic-accurate. The Arrowverse incorporated legacy DC cameos, honoring classic actors and featuring dozens of cameos in the "Crisis on Infinite Earths" crossover.

Following the end of The Flash series on May 24, 2023, the Arrowverse has come to an end, leaving an impressive legacy of DC adaptations for television. What was supposed to be a Green Arrow TV show spinning off of Smallville’s success became the starting point for one of the most successful shared superhero universes of all time. Arrow was an instant hit for The CW, proving that superheroes could work on television in a more modern TV show format. Arrow’s success would inspire both DC and Marvel shows for years to come,...

The Flash's George Reeves Cameo Reignites Conversations on Typecasting
Image
After an incredibly quick run, even for a speedster, The Flash movie is finally out on home video. This means that viewers are able to see its visual-effects-heavy third act in glorious Ultra HD. While the multiverse sequence gives people a lot to talk about, The Flash using a CGI double for George Reeves reignites controversy over the late actor's feelings about Superman.

One of the reasons SAG-AFTRA joined the WGA on strike has to do with the use of digital effects, artificial intelligence and how it erases human beings from the profession. One proposal reportedly allowed studios to scan background actors for $100. Then the studios would own that scan, and the actor's likeness, for eternity. They could appear in any movie doing anything without needing the actor's consent. While The Flash is a little different, the use of digital recreations of actors who've passed away is ethnically dubious. There's...

Every Actor to Play The Flash in Live Action in Chronological Order
Image
The Flash is not necessarily one of the most high-profile characters in superhero movies right now, but throughout the history of the DC hero there have been many onscreen representations that have delighted the fans over the years. That includes, of course, animated shows and movies, but this article will focus on the live actions and the incredible actors that have taken on the role in different years.

Each of the actors that have had the chance to portray the superhero have done their very best and left their mark on the character. Let's go over them.

Rod Haase - Legends of the Superheroes (1979)

Long before the Avengers assembled for the first time there was Legends of the Superheroes. This television special gave the world the opportunity to see the first ever live action portrayal of The Flash, in this case played by actor Rod Haase. Barry Allen was just...

Christopher Reeve Co-Star Hits Back At The Flash's Superman Cameo Backlash
Image
A Christopher Reeve co-star hits back at The Flash's Superman cameo backlash. There has been a long debate about The Flash's DC cameos, which brought back to life multiple deceased actors, including Reeve as Superman, for an extended multiverse sequence. The moment was off-putting to many, both due to the choice to bring back dead actors and the poor CGI the movie used to recreate its returning cameos. Ever since the cameos became public, fans have protested The Flash's choice to use Reeve and others.

On Twitter, Smallville Lionel Luthor actor John Glover, who worked with Reeve on the show and in multiple plays, defended The Flash's Superman cameo.

I think it’s up to his family / estate and not anyone else. Chris’ dedication to the franchise led him to Smallville as dr swan. He loved Superman and would have wanted to be included. And this is from...

The Flash Movie’s Jay Garrick Actor Finally Revealed And Makes Snubbed Cameos Even Worse
Image
While it wasn't Teddy Sears who played Jay Garrick in The Flash movie, the actual actor has now been revealed. After years of being stuck in development, The Flash movie arrived this summer, only to become one of the biggest comic book movie bombs of all time, with mixed reviews and commercial failure. The multiverse-centric film saw the Scarlet Speedster explore the consequences of time travel while also witnessing multiple other realities outside his world.

One of the biggest mysteries since The Flash movie came out was who actually ended up playing the Golden Age Flash, Jay Garrick. Despite looking a lot like the Arrowverse alum, who played the fake Jay before it was revealed that he was Hunter Zolomon, a.k.a. Zoom on The Flash TV show, it turns out that it was none other than Jason Ballantine that filled the role of Jay Garrick and not Sears.

Like Jennifer Garner, Halle Berry Needs a Shot at Superhero Redemption
Image
As superhero movies and comic book properties continue to make waves in the modern era, they're bringing back iconic faces from the 1990s and 2000s. This has been seen with John Wesley Shipp in The Flash TV series, while the MCU also did this with the previous Sony Spider-Men. Now, Deadpool 3 is reviving Jennifer Garner as Elektra.

It's not just about fan service, but showing there's a Multiverse that strings all these different realities together like the comics do. Garner fans would endorse it because after her fun role in 2003's Daredevil, she deserves redemption after her Elektra solo movie lacked direction. Ironically, with the Dcu now doing the same per Michael Keaton's Batman in The Flash, there's a chance to now create a better story for Halle Berry's Catwoman.

Dawson's Creek Almost Had a Very Different Ending Until Katie Holmes Stepped In
Image
The teen drama series Dawson's Creek could have have a completely different ending if Katie Holmes didn't put her foot down, insisting that it be changed. In the finale, Joey Potter (Holmes) was originally written to end up with Dawson Leery (James Van Der Beek). That was the idea that series creator Kevin Williamson had all along, so when he returned to write the finale after previously leaving the series after season 2, he penned his desired ending with Joey and Dawson winding up together.

However, per TVLine, Holmes' displeasure over that version of the finale is documented in the new book Freaks, Gleeks, and Dawson's Creek: How 7 Teen Shows Transformed Television. According to others who worked on the show, Holmes "freaked out" over the idea of Joey getting back with Dawson, feeling at this point that her character would much rather be with Pacey Witter (Joshua Jackson). Holmes requested that the ending be changed,...

The Flash: Who Actually Killed Barry's Mom, Explained
Image
Given the recent trend of the superhero genre to delve into alternate realities and different dimensions, it's only fair to answer who killed Nora Allen with the multiple answers provided across the recent multiple incarnations of The Flash.

The Answer According to The Flash Television Series (2014-2023)

Played by Michelle Harrison in varying versions of Nora Allen, this series presented the murder of Wally West's mother in the early episodes as the tragic result of an abusive, alcoholic war veteran.

Steeped in mythology, the trademark World War I helmet can be seen atop the rifle-wielding madman before Nora's untimely death. Wally West (portrayed by the incredible Flash franchise veteran John Wesley Shipp) uses this very same helmet as both a weapon and a symbol against his enemies in his later career. It's to be inferred here that the pre-Barry Allen, Wally West Flash had been inspired by the...

The Flash on The CW Visualized the Multiverse Better Than the Movie
Image
Cbr supports the hard work of creators and industry professionals to create movies fans all know and love, but it's important to remember the ongoing controversy with Ezra Miller. You can find Cbr's continuing coverage of Miller here.

The following contains spoilers for The Flash, which is in theaters now.

Ten years after star Ezra Miller was cast to play Barry Allen on the big screen, The Flash movie finally debuted in theaters. The film is DC's first big foray into its multiverse. Still, everything from the concept to the execution was already done by The Flash series on The CW, including visualizing the multiverse in a better, more respectful way.

Reports suggest the budget of The Flash is around $250 million (not including marketing), which is an astronomical budget for any film. Much of this cost, though to some critics not enough, is on-screen with the computer-generated visual effects throughout the film.

John Wesley Shipp Looks Back on ‘The Flash’ & Barry/Henry Scene That Brought All the Feels
Image
One of the smartest things that the producers of the Grant Gustin-led The Flash on The CW did was bring on Og Flash John Wesley Shipp, who played the Scarlet Speedster in the 1990-91 series on CBS. Shipp, a two-time Daytime Emmy-winner for his roles on As the World Turns and Santa Barbara, was tapped to not only play Barry’s dad Henry Allen but later, Jay Garrick (the Flash of Earth-3) and also his Barry Allen (from Earth-90). TV Insider sat down with Shipp to get his thoughts on what it meant to him both professionally and personally to play such integral roles on the revived series, which came to an end last month after nine seasons. What was his favorite Barry/Henry scenes? Read on to get the scoop! What did you think of The Flash series finale? John Wesley Shipp: I really appreciated the...

Thanos Creator Celebrates The Flash for Doing Something Different from Marvel
Image
Thanos creator Jim Starlin has seen The Flash and has a few things to say about how DC celebrates comic book writers very differently than Marvel does.

This week The Flash finally hits theaters, being one of the most anticipated superhero movies of recent times, and also one of the ones that have suffered the most from delays caused by the pandemic, changes in Warner Bros. Discovery, and the scandals starring its main star, Ezra Miller.

Since months before the debut, several actors and celebrities such as Tom Cruise and Stephen King have praised the work done by Andy Muschietti in the film, and now the creator of one of the greatest villains in the Marvel universe joins them.

Jim Starlin shared a brief review of The Flash on his social media, where he celebrates an important difference between the two largest comic book companies:

“Was really surprised by how...

All 8 Actors Who've Played The Flash In Live-Action
Image
Barry Allen will have his first solo movie in the upcoming film The Flash, but Ezra Miller’s iteration is hardly the first live-action version of the Scarlet Speedster. The Flash has been a major DC Comics superhero since the Golden Age of comic books. Barry Allen and other iterations of The Flash have appeared in numerous live-action adaptations, making the hero one of DC’s most popular characters outside of Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman.

Fascinatingly, Barry Allen’s introduction set DC Comics on a course toward a plethora of reboots and multiversal storytelling. Allen’s debut acknowledges Jay Garrick, prompting DC to later explain that the two heroes are each The Flash of their respective realities. Moreover, Barry Allen’s powers (later explained as a connection to a cosmic energy force known as the Speed Force) allow him to travel through time and into other realities, further popularizing the concept of the multiverse.

Recasting Grant Gustin After The Flash: 10 Marvel & DC Characters He Could Play Next
Image
Grant Gustin is open to playing another superhero after Barry Allen, and The Flash’s star would be perfect for a few Marvel and DC roles. Following The Flash’s ending, Grant Gustin discussed playing other superheroes now that his run as Barry Allen is over, noting that he is a fan of superhero stories and sci-fi in general. In the Arrowverse, Grant Gustin played Barry Allen for 10 years and nine seasons of The Flash.

The Flash season 9 concluded the show and, presumably, the entire Arrowverse. Not many actors get to play a character as big as the Flash for an entire decade, which is why Grant Gustin is already part of DC’s history. Between meta-castings and non-Flash-related roles, here are 10 DC and Marvel characters Grant Gustin could play after Barry Allen.

The Flash Director on the Possibility of Recasting Ezra Miller for a Potential Sequel
Image
Ezra Miller's future as Barry Allen may not yet have been set by James Gunn or Warner Bros. Discovery, but The Flash’s director is very clear about what he would do if the decision is up to him.

After starring in a long list of scandals in recent years, Miller was criticized by a large portion of the DC fandom and audiences, with many calling for them not to continue playing the Scarlet Speedster and be replaced by Grant Gustin or some other. However, the film's release is just around the corner, and most of the early reviews are praising Miller's performance as Allen.

That's probably why Muschietti has no doubt that if he gets to make a sequel to The Flash, he couldn't do it with anyone other than Ezra. This was confirmed by the director on the podcast The Discourse (via Variety):

“If [a sequel] happens, yes.

The Flash: Why Bart Allen Didn't Return for the Series Finale
Image
The Flash showrunner Eric Wallace recently revealed that scheduling conflicts prevented him from bringing back Jordan Fisher for the long-running Arrowverse show's series finale.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Wallace shared that the "timing just couldn't have been worse" regarding Fisher returning to reprise his role as Barry and Iris' second child, Bart Allen, in the series finale, "A New World, Part Four." Wallace explained that Fisher was busy starring in Broadway's Sweeney Todd at the same time The Flash was filming its series finale. Fisher previously portrayed Bart Allen, who fights crime as the speedster Impulse in the year 2049, in Seasons 7 and 8 of The Flash.

‘The Flash’ Season 9 Finale Recap & Ending, Explained: What Happened To The Legacy Of Flash?
Image
Judging purely from the downward quality graph of its last few seasons and even the major portion of the final one, it feels like CW’s The Flash should have wrapped things up years ago. Even the most sincere fans of the series will acknowledge that poor writing and being overcrowded by unnecessary characters have absolutely destroyed any sort of significance the series ever had. It makes the realization all the more painful that the impeccable first two seasons of the series were trendsetting in superhero adaptations because they wore qualities like novelty, optimism, and hope on their sleeve. With the series finale releasing, the realization will dawn heavily on the fans who have invested themselves in the series for nine long years, as with the conclusion of the series, the last vestiges of the Arrowverse, the TV universe it was a part of, are gone in a flash too.

All the Characters Who Came Back for The Flash Series Finale
Image
The following contains spoilers for The Flash Season 9, Episode 13, "A New World, Part Four: Finale," which aired May 24 on The CW.

The final season of The Flash on The CW wrapped up the story for the show's characters and the entire Arrowverse. This means that the entire final season was a bevy of guest appearances and cameos. Plenty of returning champs came back for the series finale, including villains and allies of Team Flash. After nine years and more than 100 episodes, it can be difficult to remember just who everyone is.

One of the most important returning characters was Rick Cosnett's Eddie Thawne, who came back for the final four episodes. Along with Iris's ex-fiancé, her daughter from the future Nora West-Allen, played by Jessica Parker Kennedy, is another holdover from the penultimate episode of The Flash. However, several other characters returned, many of them former Big Bad villains from past seasons.

The Flash's Greatest Gift Was the Original Barry Allen
Image
The end of The Flash came and went after nearly a decade on television. The Arrowverse series has been ambitious in its storytelling and visual effects, using fully CGI characters on a television budget. It also has heart, showing the main characters' capacity for love and compassion as a superpower. Yet the greatest gift The Flash gave DC Comics fans was the return of John Wesley Shipp -- the first actor to play Barry Allen in a regular TV series.

Rod Haase originally played The Flash in Legends of the Superheroes, two 1979 television comedy specials. The Flash debuted in 1990, featuring special effects that were state of the art at the time, but paled compared to CW standards. It was the actor in the super-suit who made the series live on long beyond its single season. Shipp was cast as Barry Allen, and it was on his performance to make the series work.
