Barry Allen's version of The Flash has had quite a few live-action interpretations, but unlike fellow DC crimefighters like Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman, very few of his entertainment ventures have become mainstream.

In total, there are three live-action versions of the character that have hit it big with audiences: 1990's The Flash TV series starring John Wesley Shipp; 2014's The Flash TV show, starring Grant Gustin, and the Dceu version played by Ezra Miller, who appeared n 2016's Suicide Squad, Justice League, Zack Snyder's Justice League, Peacemaker and his own standalone film, 2023's The Flash. 

The fact that there are only three versios of him that have reached mainstream success got me thinking about who the best adaptation of Barry Allen might be. So, I wanted to turn the question to you. Who is your favorite live-action Flash? To keep things interesting, every single live-action take on the character counts.

The Flash stands out as fiction’s most famous speedster, having been adapted many times in both animated and live-action formats. Over the decades, various actors have portrayed the iconic character, with some resonating more with audiences than others. Fans on Ranker recently rated all actors who have taken on the Flash roles, including both voice and live-action performances. We’ve compiled a list of the top 10 based on their rankings. 10. Kenny Johnston DC

Kenny Johnston portrayed Barry Allen/The Flash for a brief period, appearing in the 1997 made-for-tv movie Justice League of America. This film, presented as a mockumentary about the titular superheroes, was originally intended as a pilot for a Justice League TV series that never came to fruition. Although his time as the Flash was short, Johnston’s role earned him a spot in the top 10.

Speaking to US Weekly, Philipps discussed the Dawson's Creek reunion she is in the midst of organizing with co-stars Katie Holmes and Michelle Williams. "We're really trying to figure something out, but there are a couple of people who have some work things that cannot be moved," Philipps said. "It's like playing chess, trying to get everybody's schedules to align. I'm very hopeful that at some point we will. The best Chad Michael Murray movies and TV shows include a mix of young adult releases, and in recent years, more adult drama fare. There are many things that DC Comics fans are longing for, but a third Injustice video game is definitely on that list. It's something we've been discussing since completing Injustice 2 and, with that having come out in 2017, it's been some time indeed.

With that in mind, let's do some more theorizing, this time about which characters could appear in Injustice 3 if it happens. To be honest, there are so many DC characters that haven't been used in the Injustice games that it would be impossible to list them all, so let's look at some of the ones that I want to see the most and the ones that fans have been clamoring over for years.

Canceled high-profile superhero properties is as much a part the history of Marvel and DC as are the billion-dollar, 20-part franchises. Daredevil is but one example in a long line of shows failing to meet expectations. Furthermore, Secret Invasion’s abysmal performance is not so strange either. For past generations of comic fans, any opportunity to see their neglected favorite Marvel or DC character on-screen was a gargantuan deal — it's hard to stress how rare and special it was. If you are under 30, you don’t remember how shocking it was to see Nick Fury on primetime network TV in 1998, or how painful it was to see the back-door pilot fail. Superheroes on television were, in many ways, harmed by billion-dollar blockbusters more than they were helped. The McU's Infinity Saga set the bar for what we expect and demand way too high for anyone on a TV budget to deliver.

The Flash arrived on the CW as an antidote to the heavy, bleak world of Arrow. Our Scarlet Speedster was going to be a bright, upbeat superhero series and it was—at first. With each successive season, it grew bleaker and more chaotic as an overstuffed cast all demanded screentime and the writing staff never seemed to grasp that there were other villains than those connected to the Speed Force.

The 2022-23 television season brought us The Flash’s ninth and final season, providing a chance to give closure to the core characters. Tomorrow, Warner Home Entertainment releases The Flash: The Complete Ninth and Final Season.

Across the truncated season, everyone had a moment to shine, get their due, take a bow and move aside so the Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) and Nora West Allen (Candice Patton) center got to have the last word as they finally welcomed Nora to the preset.

The Flash missed the chance to bring back Henry Cavill's Superman and Grant Gustin's Flash despite having a multiversal plot and numerous cameos from other characters. Henry Cavill's Superman only appears through CGI recreations, while Grant Gustin's Flash is completely absent from The Flash, despite their previous meeting in Crisis on Infinite Earths. After several attempts (this iteration of the character has been brewing since at least 2013) and substantial controversy, the scarlet speedster has arrived in theaters with an accompanying whirlwind of both excitement and hesitation. Borrowing loosely from the event comic series “Flashpoint,” “The Flash” stars Ezra Miller as Barry Allen, a crime lab technician and superhero (or “metahuman” in DC speak) who decides to go back in time and prevent his mother’s murder (and his father’s arrest for said murder) but winds up being knocked out of his timeline and into an alternate reality that is very, very wrong. In this reality he is younger, doesn’t have superpowers and might be helpless to stop an alien invasion led by Zod (Michael Shannon), since this world doesn’t have any metahumans.

The Arrowverse's crossovers created a greater sense of interconnectivity than the Dceu, with small-scale crossovers helping with worldbuilding. The Flash is not necessarily one of the most high-profile characters in superhero movies right now, but throughout the history of the DC hero there have been many onscreen representations that have delighted the fans over the years. The teen drama series Dawson's Creek could have have a completely different ending if Katie Holmes didn't put her foot down, insisting that it be changed. Barry Allen will have his first solo movie in the upcoming film The Flash, but Ezra Miller’s iteration is hardly the first live-action version of the Scarlet Speedster. The Flash has been a major DC Comics superhero since the Golden Age of comic books. Barry Allen and other iterations of The Flash have appeared in numerous live-action adaptations, making the hero one of DC’s most popular characters outside of Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman.

Fascinatingly, Barry Allen’s introduction set DC Comics on a course toward a plethora of reboots and multiversal storytelling. Allen’s debut acknowledges Jay Garrick, prompting DC to later explain that the two heroes are each The Flash of their respective realities. Moreover, Barry Allen’s powers (later explained as a connection to a cosmic energy force known as the Speed Force) allow him to travel through time and into other realities, further popularizing the concept of the multiverse.

Grant Gustin is open to playing another superhero after Barry Allen, and The Flash’s star would be perfect for a few Marvel and DC roles. Following The Flash’s ending, Grant Gustin discussed playing other superheroes now that his run as Barry Allen is over, noting that he is a fan of superhero stories and sci-fi in general. In the Arrowverse, Grant Gustin played Barry Allen for 10 years and nine seasons of The Flash.

The Flash season 9 concluded the show and, presumably, the entire Arrowverse. Not many actors get to play a character as big as the Flash for an entire decade, which is why Grant Gustin is already part of DC’s history. Ezra Miller's future as Barry Allen may not yet have been set by James Gunn or Warner Bros. Discovery, but The Flash’s director is very clear about what he would do if the decision is up to him.

After starring in a long list of scandals in recent years, Miller was criticized by a large portion of the DC fandom and audiences, with many calling for them not to continue playing the Scarlet Speedster and be replaced by Grant Gustin or some other. However, the film's release is just around the corner, and most of the early reviews are praising Miller's performance as Allen.

That's probably why Muschietti has no doubt that if he gets to make a sequel to The Flash, he couldn't do it with anyone other than Ezra. This was confirmed by the director on the podcast The Discourse (via Variety):

The Flash showrunner Eric Wallace recently revealed that scheduling conflicts prevented him from bringing back Jordan Fisher for the long-running Arrowverse show's series finale.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Wallace shared that the "timing just couldn't have been worse" regarding Fisher returning to reprise his role as Barry and Iris' second child, Bart Allen, in the series finale, "A New World, Part Four." Wallace explained that Fisher was busy starring in Broadway's Sweeney Todd at the same time The Flash was filming its series finale. Fisher previously portrayed Bart Allen, who fights crime as the speedster Impulse in the year 2049, in Seasons 7 and 8 of The Flash.

Judging purely from the downward quality graph of its last few seasons and even the major portion of the final one, it feels like CW’s The Flash should have wrapped things up years ago. Even the most sincere fans of the series will acknowledge that poor writing and being overcrowded by unnecessary characters have absolutely destroyed any sort of significance the series ever had. It makes the realization all the more painful that the impeccable first two seasons of the series were trendsetting in superhero adaptations because they wore qualities like novelty, optimism, and hope on their sleeve. With the series finale releasing, the realization will dawn heavily on the fans who have invested themselves in the series for nine long years, as with the conclusion of the series, the last vestiges of the Arrowverse, the TV universe it was a part of, are gone in a flash too.

The final season of The Flash on The CW wrapped up the story for the show's characters and the entire Arrowverse. This means that the entire final season was a bevy of guest appearances and cameos. Plenty of returning champs came back for the series finale, including villains and allies of Team Flash. After nine years and more than 100 episodes, it can be difficult to remember just who everyone is.

One of the most important returning characters was Rick Cosnett's Eddie Thawne, who came back for the final four episodes. Along with Iris's ex-fiancé, her daughter from the future Nora West-Allen, played by Jessica Parker Kennedy, is another holdover from the penultimate episode of The Flash. However, several other characters returned, many of them former Big Bad villains from past seasons.

The end of The Flash came and went after nearly a decade on television. The Arrowverse series has been ambitious in its storytelling and visual effects, using fully CGI characters on a television budget. It also has heart, showing the main characters' capacity for love and compassion as a superpower. Yet the greatest gift The Flash gave DC Comics fans was the return of John Wesley Shipp -- the first actor to play Barry Allen in a regular TV series.

Rod Haase originally played The Flash in Legends of the Superheroes, two 1979 television comedy specials. The Flash debuted in 1990, featuring special effects that were state of the art at the time, but paled compared to CW standards. It was the actor in the super-suit who made the series live on long beyond its single season. Shipp was cast as Barry Allen, and it was on his performance to make the series work.
