An all-new Star Trekscripted audio series is on the horizon in 2025. Recording for Star Trek: Khan, which was announced last year, has officially wrapped, per a release via CBS. But, the cast remained a mystery until now.
A former Lostcast member and a star of the Apple TV+ series For All Mankindwill lead the voice cast for Star Trek: Khan. CBS announced on Feb. 27 that Naveen Andrews, who played Sayid Jarrah on Lost, will voice Kahn Noonien Singh. Wrenn Schmidt, known as Margo Madison on For All Mankind, will play Marla McGivers, a former Starfleet lieutenant who followed Khan into exile and became his wife.
In the new audio drama, Star Trek: Khan, the life of the titular character will be explored in a way that has never been done before, and the rest of his story will be told. The audio drama is based on a story by Nicholas Meyer,...

Captain James T. Kirk's (William Shatner) first meeting with Khan Noonien Singh (Ricardo Montalban) in Star Trek: The Original Series is changed by Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. As a prequel, Strange New Worlds introduced Lieutenant LA'an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong), Khan's ancestor, and a love interest of Lt. James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) when he was younger and a frequent visitor aboard the Starship Enterprise. Further, Strange New Worlds has altered Khan's Star Trek timeline, adding new dimensions to Kirk's original encounter with Khan.
In Star Trek: The Original Series season 1, episode 22, "Space Seed," the USS Enterprise intercepts the S.S. Botany Bay, an Earth ship from the 1990s. Cryogenically frozen aboard are Khan and 70 of his genetically engineered followers. Welcomed as a guest aboard the Enterprise, Khan plots to hijack the starship. Seduced by Khan, Enterprise historian Lt. Marla McGivers (Madelyn Rhue) betrays Captain Kirk as Khan's followers take over the ship.

"Star Trek" is a workplace drama first and foremost, and it took place on board the well-organized U.S.S. Enterprise, a space vessel carefully divided into necessary departments, offices, and workstations. The main characters were, by necessity, deeply professional, and tended to keep their upper lips stiff as they faced unusual spatial phenomenon or aggressive alien visitors. Very occasionally, one of the main characters would lose their cool, make a foolish decision, or have an unexpected freakout, but for the most part, level heads prevailed. Many love the central cast of "Star Trek" for their ability to remain capable under pressure, and it's hard to hate someone when we understand they're so good at their job.
There were many characters throughout "Star Trek," though, that never had their wits about them. Indeed, there were whimsical agents of chaos, whiny incompetents, and corrupt captains that felt counter to the egalitarian spirit of "Star Trek,...

The latest episode of Star Trek: Lower Decks season 4 features the USS Cerritos visiting a menagerie that includes a Ceti eel, a terrifying alien creature from The Wrath of Khan. The chaos in the episode is caused by a seemingly adorable alien named Moopsy, who actually eats bones and is more dangerous than an Attack Tribble from Star Trek: Picard season 3. Lt. Mariner is wrongly blamed for setting Moospy loose, but she would never release a Ceti eel, clearly demonstrating her knowledge of Starfleet history.
Star Trek: Lower Decks season 4 subtly brought back the scariest alien in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Lower Decks season 4, episode 2, "I Have No Bones Yet I Must Flee," brought the USS Cerritos to Narj's Miraculous Menagerarium, a menagerie displaying all manner of alien lifeforms, including two humans. Lt. Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome), Commander Jack Ransom (Jerry O'Connell), and Ensign Gary are soon...

According to its own mythology, the utopia of "Star Trek" had to be earned. Sometime between the present day and the franchise's idyllic future, several destructive wars will break out, causing humankind to experience a reckoning. Recall that Trek creator Gene Roddenberry was born in 1921, so he had very sharp memories of World War II and all of the horrors it produced. Roddenberry came to feel that humanity ought to learn from such horrors, and began to depict war -- at least in "Star Trek" -- as humanity's "low point." Once faced with self-destruction, Roddenberry felt, humans would eventually set themselves on the path to healing and recovery.
It was antithetical, then, for Roddenberry to depict the character of Khan Noonien Singh (Ricardo Montalbán) the way he did. In the "Star Trek" episode "Space Seed", the Enterprise rescues Khan from a cargo ship called the Botany Bay. Khan and several...

Star Trek: The Original Series has undoubtedly had a huge impact on popular culture, and while it remains greatly entertaining 57 years later, the show is still a product of its time in many ways. With its premiere in 1966, Star Trek did not immediately become a hit, but after episodes began showing in syndication, it quickly gained a following. Following the adventures of Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and his crew aboard the USS Enterprise, Tos introduced the world to several beloved characters who have become iconic figures of popular culture.
Much about the 1960s was different than it is today, including the television landscape. Star Trek: The Original Series also had a notoriously low budget in its final season. Despite the sometimes cringe-worthy elements of the show, many aspects of Tos worked well then and still hold up today. The characters and the bonds established between them remain an important part of Star Trek,...

In "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow," Lieutenant LA'an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong) and an alternate reality version of Captain James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) time-traveled to 21st-century Toronto to stop an attack that would alter the timeline. LA'an discovers the target of a Romulan assassin named Sera (Adelaide Kane) was her ancestor, Khan, who is just a young boy.

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, season 2, episode 2, "Ad Astra per Aspera."Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has added new layers to the history of Star Trek: The Original Series' genetically enhanced tyrant Khan Noonien Singh (Ricardo Montalban) proving that the character still has a lasting influence on Star Trek decades after his first appearance. In "Ad Astra per Aspera" Number One (Rebecca Romijn) was put on trial for concealing the truth about her own genetic enhancements. The court case exposed the considerable prejudice that Starfleet had towards so-called Augments, rooted in their fear of the emergence of another Khan Noonien-Singh.
The shadow of Khan hovered over the proceedings in the court, as the reality of the Federation's ban on genetic enhancements became clear. In seeking to avoid the creation of another brutal warlord, Starfleet are revealed to be unwittingly condoning the persecution of species like the Illyrians,...

In Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, the eponymous villain, Khan Noonien Singh (Ricardo Montalbán), actually has a legitimate reason to hate Admiral James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and Starfleet. Of course, Khan's expression of his hatred was pure supervillainy, and he cemented his status as the greatest Star Trek antagonist in The Wrath of Khan. But while Khan is a madman, his core issue with Kirk does have a degree of merit.
Introduced in the Star Trek: The Original Series season 1 episode, "Space Seed," Khan was a genetically-engineered 'superman' who was once the ruler of a quarter of the Earth's population. Khan and other Augments seized power in the late 20th century, sparking a conflict known as the Eugenics Wars. Once he was on the losing side, Khan and his followers fled Earth on the S.S. Botany Bay and spent the next 300 years in cryogenic sleep until...

Comebacks are funny. Most of the time, in order for a comeback to make sense, everyone has to be aware of the thing or person that had left and is now returning. After all, the Empire can’t strike back if you’re not aware of how it was doing beforehand.
This may seem obvious, but it’s worth noting because every once in a while, in big sci-fi narratives, the opposite occurs: a comeback is a huge deal, but knowledge of anything pre-comeback is optional, or perhaps, irrelevant. It sounds nuts, but this specific kind of comeback perfectly describes Khan Noonien Singh in 1982’s The Wrath of Khan. 40 summers after Kirk screamed “Khaaaaan!!!” the true brilliance of this film is how it tricked everyone into “remembering” Khan in the first place.

Favorite director Don Siegel is in fine form in this 1967 TV movie, a keeper with qualities not seen in Hollywood’s mega-westerns of the day. Henry Fonda’s ragged drifter is hunted by a gang of railroad deputies, and chief deputy Michael Parks doesn’t intercede because he can’t control his own men. A great screenplay, Siegel’s direction, plus committed performances make it stand out: Anne Baxter, Dan Duryea, Sal Mineo, Bernie Hamilton and Madlyn Rhue.

Tony Curtis grew up idolizing the suave and funny Cary Grant, emulated his romantic moves as an actor and then performed a brilliant impersonation of Grant for Billy Wilder. The next step had to be co-starring with the great man himself. Blake Edwards’ amiable, relaxed submarine movie allows Grant to play with ladies’ under-things, while Curtis wrestles with a pig.

Alec Guinness: Before Obi-Wan Kenobi, there were the eight D’Ascoyne family members (photo: Alec Guiness, Dennis Price in ‘Kind Hearts and Coronets’) (See previous post: “Alec Guinness Movies: Pre-Star Wars Career.”) TCM won’t be showing The Bridge on the River Kwai on Alec Guinness day, though obviously not because the cable network programmers believe that one four-hour David Lean epic per day should be enough. After all, prior to Lawrence of Arabia TCM will be presenting the three-and-a-half-hour-long Doctor Zhivago (1965), a great-looking but never-ending romantic drama in which Guinness — quite poorly — plays a Kgb official. He’s slightly less miscast as a mere Englishman — one much too young for the then 32-year-old actor — in Lean’s Great Expectations (1946), a movie that fully belongs to boy-loving (in a chaste, fatherly manner) fugitive Finlay Currie. And finally, make sure to watch Robert Hamer’s dark comedy Kind Hearts and Coronets...

Yul Brynner (l.) and Jack Warden (ctr.) mean business in Escape from Zahrain.
The punchy 1962 action-adventure movie Escape From Zahrain stars Yul Brynner (The Ten Commandments) as a charismatic rebel leader fighting local corruption and foreign exploitation in a fictitious, oil-rich Arab sheikdom.
While this might sound like it’s “ripped from today’s headlines,” the tragic difference is that in 1962, Arab rebels were fighting for modernity, not fundamentalism!
Produced and directed by Ronald Neame (The Poseidon Adventure) and co-starring Sal Mineo (Rebel Without a Cause), Madlyn Rhue (He Rides Tall), Jack Warden (…And Justice for All) and James Mason (Bigger Than Life), Escape From Zahrain is brashly colorful on a very low budget — the flip-side to that same year’s Lawrence of Arabia, if you will.
