He graduated from UCLA with a degree in mass communications, then earned his law degree from the Southwestern University School of Law in 1981. A member of the California Bar, he practiced real-estate law for two years, then got involved in television journalism when he became a legal analyst and general assignment reporter at KABC in Los Angeles in 1983.
