During the Civil War, a young man joins the Union army. His sweetheart's brother, on the other hand, joins the Confederate forces. During a battle the Confederate is captured and brought to the young Union officer, who recognizes him, and later allows him to escape. For that action he is tried for treason, convicted and sentenced to hang. All that remains now is for President Abraham Lincoln to sign his death warrant.

Billings and Meeker are two brow-beaten husbands who are dominated by their wives. The women are leaders in a "Rights for Women" club, and they neglect their household duties to show the way to their sisters in the cause. On the day of an important meeting of the club, Billings and Meeker are forced to listen to harsh words from their wives and are in rebellious spirits and ripe for mutiny. The occasion presents itself for an attractive looking young woman calls on Billings soliciting funds for a charitable institution. Billings is favorably impressed and besides his wife has just given him a curtain lecture. The girl is susceptible to flattery, and before she leaves, the henpecked husband has arranged a little supper, at which Meeker and her chum are to be guests. Telephones are brought into requisition and the affair is arranged to the joy of the two husbands. They repair to the restaurant appointed and have an uneasy half hour waiting for their fair guests. In the meantime their wives are spellbinding the members of the club at a stormy session. The young women arrive at the café and the dinner proceeds. Meeker succumbs to the influence of the wine and becomes tipsy. Just about this time a young man calls and takes the solicitor and her chum away. Billings pays the check out of Meeker's wallet and lugs him to his home, lying him on a couch. Mrs. Billings returns and Billings eludes her. She sees Meeker just as his wife calls. Billings bursts in and accuses his wife of an affair with his friend. The women indulge in a hair-pulling match whereat the men wax jubilant, and the scene closes with the husbands getting good and even with their wives.

The boob is working in a country grocery store. One day, a farmer gets in an argument with him. Words lead to a fight and the farmer chases the boob out and up the street. In his endeavor to escape be jumps into an auto driven by a girl from the city who lives near the store. The girl assists him to escape. In the girl the boob sees the girl of his dreams, but in him the girl sees merely a boob. A traveling show comes to town and advertises for extra people for their show. The boob applies and gets the job. After several blunders he gets his part and comes out on the stage. The girl and her father are in the audience and see the boob make an ass of himself. A fire breaks out in the theater during which there is a stampede for the exits. The girl is left in the burning theater. Her father tries to save her but cannot face the flames. The boob rushes in and saves the girl's life. Shortly afterward, the girl and her father leave for the city and leave a note for the boob. The girl tells him that if he ever comes to the city to be sure and call upon her. Enclosed in the note he finds a check from her father telling him to use his own judgment in disposing of the money, but he would suggest that he use it in getting an education. The girl in the city grows tired of society life and longs for a real man. The shallow life and selfishness of the people she comes in contact with disgusts her. The boob has taken the girls advice and secured a college education. He returns to her rejuvenated and she is very much surprised at the change in him. The boob has indeed become another man. With the development of his mind, his character and even looks have changed. In him the girl sees all that she has been wishing for.

Lillian is an unfortunate woman. After leaving her baby at the door of a hospital she meets David, the author of her misfortune. It is a case of starvation or the "easiest way." She chooses the "easiest way." After eighteen years she again shows up, a social outcast and a tool for David's black profession. David has his eye upon a mere slip of a girl who works in a department store. He attempts to lure her to his resort, but fails. He then turns the case over to Lillian. Dorothy needs money for clothes. Lillian offers her the position and she accompanies the older woman to David's resort. Wallace, Dorothy's sweetheart, waits for her outside the house. Once inside the resort Dorothy is beautifully gowned. While changing her dress she takes a locket from her neck and lays it aside. Lillian finds it. Dorothy is her daughter. All the mother instinct and realization of her actions awaken in Lillian. She saves her daughter from David and her own fate and turns her over to Wallace. David is sent to prison. Lillian dies, despised and shunned, and Dorothy never knows that the woman who delivered her to evil and then saved her was her mother.

Unaware of the weakness of Bob Graham's character, Bess Dawson decides to marry him instead of the other cowboy who loves her, Cheyenne Harry. Before the wedding, however, some crooks induce Bob to take part in a hold-up. Then when Harry hears that a posse has been dispatched to catch Bob, he rides out to him and helps him escape. Determined to spare Bess from marrying a convicted criminal, Harry then lets the posse think that he himself, and not Bob, was involved in the robbery. Bess is horrified that Bob has let Harry take the blame and finally realizes that she picked the wrong cowboy. As a result, after Bob is killed in a gunfight and Harry has been cleared of the robbery charge, she quickly accepts his marriage proposal.

There is no reliable documentation that any film bearing this title was produced by IMP, or released by Universal at this time. Chances are production of the film was either suspended before completion, or else the title was changed before release, quite possibly to avoid confusion with the similarly titled Vitagraph release The Old Guard (1913) (q.v.).

After a prologue which shows several aerial views of the Acropolis, the story begins. The friendship of Damon, the senator, and Pythias, the soldier, is famous in Ancient Syracuse. Because the general Dionysius is infatuated with Calanthe, Pythias' sweetheart, he sends the soldier to fight the Carthaginians at the Battle of Agrigentum. Pythias returns in triumph, and then angers Dionysius even further when he defeats Aristle, the general's favorite, in a chariot race. During the wedding ceremony for Pythias and Calanthe, Dionysius has himself proclaimed sovereign while Damon is absent from the Senate. Shocked, Damon attempts to assassinate Dionysius, but he fails and is sentenced to death. In order for Damon to say goodbye to his wife and son, Pythias leaves Calanthe and takes his friend's place in prison, offering to die in Damon's place if he does not return. Despite several tests of the strength of their friendship, they remain loyal to each other and so impress Dionysius that he allows them both Free.

Bailey Dryden, a young millionaire, collects together his chums for a last voyage on his yacht before becoming a Benedict, the yacht is anchored near Mermaid Rock. There is a legend about the rock of a young mermaid who lives there and can assume human form every hundred years if she desires. The young men are delighted with the tale, and as Bailey stares at the rock the mermaid rises out of the water and beckons to him to come. Bailey, dumbfounded, calls his chums, but when they have reached his side the mermaid disappeared. The next day Bailey visits the rock himself and finds the mermaid asleep with her arm about a baby seal. As the young millionaire approaches the sea myth, she throws her arms around him, and then suddenly disappears. He returns to the boat, but will not explain his strange actions to his friends, and fearing he is unbalanced, they send word to his fiancée to come at once. Next day by means of a fish the mermaid sends him a message asking him to meet her at full moon on the rocks. His friends, sure that his mind is affected keep close watch upon him, and when he steals out that night to keep the engagement, his chum, Taber, tries to stop him. A struggle ensues and he is forced to gag and tie Taber to keep him quiet. Bailey and the little mermaid meet, and she tells him that she can assume human form and live with him always until he tires of her. She then, assumes the shape of a human being, and Bailey carries her back to the yacht. He tells Taber and the captain he found her on the rocks. There are no feminine costumes on the yacht so Bailey borrows a loose suit from the Chinese butler and she dresses in the Chinese costume. Next morning the mermaid is introduced to the young men, who are enchanted with her. She refuses to wear shoes of any kind, and she is happy in the new mode of living. In the midst of her joy Dora and her mother arrive. In a panic the men try to hide Algae, but when she sees Bailey kiss his fiancée she is filled with jealousy and throws herself past the men into Bailey's arms. Bailey explains matters to the mother and daughter, and asks Dora to lend the girl a few of her gowns. The Dryden fortune is too large to risk losing, so Dora, at her mother's mention, agrees to Bailey's request. Algae does not understand why Dora is permitted to go about in a diminutive bathing suit, while Bailey covers her up hurriedly when she appears in a bodice and short skirt. Her last escapade brings down Bailey's wrath upon her. She has refused to wear shoes and stockings that evening although dressed in an evening gown, and when pursued by the irritated Bailey, she dives overboard, ball gown and all. Bailey punishes her by refusing to speak to her, and sends her to her room to change her gown. To punish her further he purposely makes love to Dora just outside the porthole of Algae's room. Algae hears him, believes he has tired of her, and without stopping to question, the little mermaid casts off the dresses she wears and dives back into the sea nevermore to assume human form. Too late, Bailey discovers he loves her. She is gone. He is forced to set sail without her. On the rocks the little mermaid sobs her heart out while he stands gazing out at sea. Taber lays a hand on his shoulder, and with a start he awakens; it has all been a dream. With a sigh at the charm of his dream he finished the letter to his fiancée, and then thinks once more of the little mermaid whom he loved and lost.
