- The Yangs have moved from Gansu, one of the poorest provinces in Northwestern China, and settled in Shenzhen in South China more than 20 years ago. Having hoped to find a future for their next generation, the Yangs only reckon that after many hard years of working in Shenzhen as construction and factory workers, the new Shenzhen no longer has a place for them. They return to their home village in Gansu. Yang Yaoting, their Shenzhen-born daughter, who has neither a Shenzhen residency nor a college degree, sees none of the future her parents have envisioned for her in modern Shenzhen. Amidst the harsh reality of daily life, the quiescent, soft-spoken Yaoting, along with her peers, leads a solitary life, and can only find solace in the fantasy worlds of virtual reality and WeChat. Seeing her parents having difficulty in readapting to a rural life back home, Yaoting decides to visit Gansu and bring her beloved parents back to Shenzhen.
- In 1980s China, Wu is an aspiring poet who also works at a coal mine in northern China, while his doting wife Hui lovingly supports him at every turn. Their chance at success finally comes when Wu's poem is published in a magazine and earns praise from a renowned poet. However, malaise and distrust between the two in the ensuing years send both their marriage and their social status plummet towards unimaginable depths.
- Eleven-year-old Xiaojie is a troublemaker who loves the sea. He lives with his uncle and his angelic daughter, who run a restaurant together. One day, Xiaojie has to prepare for a presentation on the sea for school. He desperately needs an encyclopedia, but financial difficulties at home prevent his wish from coming true. The situation at home gets worse after his uncle gets hurt in a car accident. His uncle and the villagers try to lead Xiaojie, who witnesses the car accident, to make a false statement for the settlement money. When he refuses, his cousin asks him to make a false testimony, promising to buy him an encyclopedia on marine life. However, when Xiaojie heads to the police station to make a statement, he learns a shocking secret about his parents. In the frustrating world of adults, Xiaojie chooses to do the only thing he can do. Over the Sea is a poignant film that evokes empathy and compassion by providing a look into the deep-seated wounds and thoughts of a boy who seems bright and carefree on the outside, through his unique world view that drifts between reality and fantasy. An outstanding performance of the young actor who plays the role of Xiaojie makes it difficult for the viewers to tear their eyes away from the screen until the very end.
