I know there has been a lot of controversy surrounding the production of Rust. Despite that, I'm a fan of western films and still wanted to give Rust a chance. I'm glad I did. It's a beautifully shot western with a story that fits well within the historical setting.
The film starts off slowly, more like the older westerns. This is used effectively to portray the harsh environment in which the story takes place. After the second act, the film picks up pace and the action increases. For a modern "action" film, it may not be much, but for a western, there's a fair amount of adventure and action.
Some choices might seem odd, but they still feel realistic within the world and the decisions certain characters would make. Some scenes might feel a bit redundant but are mainly intended as visual metaphors.
My only real criticism would be the editing. It feels less polished compared to the rest of the production. Some transitions are sloppy and feel unnatural. I also found the location title cards a bit childish for such a serious story. It's not a reason to skip the film, but it does make it a less strong movie than it could have been.
Overall, it's a good western that draws a lot of inspiration from the classics. The cinematography is beautiful, and the acting is strong. A solid western with a nostalgic feel.

Do you like westerns? I do and this one I enjoyed. It's starts with a gang of misfits who kill an innocent family and abduct their daughter. This seems like a simple set up for the movie but it goes it's own way. It blurred the lines between good and evil and although the story itself isnt without flaws it delivers this message.
We see a couple familiar face among the acteurs and they're at home in this movie. Overall the acting is pretty decent and the sets look great. The costumes are ok but feel a little to clean at the beginning. Nevertheless the western feel is real enough.
But this movie isn't without hiccups. I can understand why some people hate it and it feels cheap at some parts through the movie. The editing feels rushed and even early in the movie the cuts become repetitive. It feels unprofessional and combined with the special effects the movie feels like a B movie. The camera work isn't the best as some might notice and it looks like it's been shot on a lower-end camera. I think a big chunk of the money went into the cast and set and they had to cut cost in post. If the budget didn't allow it I think they made the good choice to focus on the story. If you can live with the somewhat sloppy camera and like westerns don't let the bad rating scare you and give it a try.
I've read so many bad reviews so I felt to clear things out. This is something I would call een anti movie. The story is what an 80's horror movie would have been but then turns it around. In the beginning it gives away the ending and does it through out the movie.
So if your expecting an trilling 80's style horror movie, you're gonna be disappointed because the story goes in against the Hollywood writings and there for is something only a few people gonna like.
The movie is slow, is kinda dorky and tries to make you feel uncomfortable but not in a scary way. I enjoyed it and I understand why some people don't. Still interested in watching this movie? Just try it and see for yourself and maybe you're like me.
