In the original Dansk version there's a subversive undercurrent of sheer horror which is difficult to define. That makes it uncomfortable to watch as it keeps pulling you deeper.
The title of the movie describes only one part of the terror. The darkness sits within the antagonists and their manipulations. There's a realism to the performances. Without 'Hollywood' polish you feel like you can relate to the ordinariness.
This new version has none of the question of -- where is this going? What is really true here?
That's ok, but there's no effort to create any sort of mood.
The last act of the original is devastating. The last act of this new version is a very lean nothing.

A bunch of people trying to convince themselves how evolved they are only to discover their natural responses like self-doubt, jealousy, control and manipulation hobble their efforts. They keep forging onward (to the sound of one hand clapping) displaying their inadequacies and lack of self awareness.
This show is genuinely boring because nothing really happens. If the individuals were ever held to account for their subjective idiosyncrasies in relation to others it would be more interesting.

Came into this one knowing nothing. Didn't know it was an Aussie film, which within a few minutes was obvious; accents and gum trees!
The cinematography is excellent and the script is fast paced with some absolute gems of metaphoric brilliance.
The acting is excellent. Aussies familiar with each other are always 'having a go' at each other with deprecatory humour.
Most reviewers are bothered by the swearing, that's how Aussies speak. We are mostly discerning, however socially with our friends we let it rip! It's a cultural difference.
