The subject of bad influencers is endlessly mesmerising to me because it delves in to the human psychology of narcissists and why they do what they do.
Belle was desperate for friends and attention but did not receive them through the ways she wanted. And so she lied about having cancer. This later snowballs into excessive fraud and webs of lies that reach all the way to the top. She wanted desperately to be friends with Milla Blake, an actual cancer survivor who pushes alternative medicine in her own books.
While Milla was fooled into thinking there were other options to treat her illness, Belle aggressively campaigned for the shoddy treatments, while pocketing the donations for herself, while never actually having been sick. These two women wanted alternatives for their lives in different ways, but ended up lying and potentially harming other innocent people, along with themselves.
One big criticism I have is the constant flash forwards, flashbacks and the resulting non linear storyline. This was no doubt done on purpose as a way attempting to make sense of Belle's continuous story changes and fibbing. But it does get very confusing and frustrating at times.
The series also omits, changes and adds info and characters to the story that are not true, or half true. Backstory and family members of Belle that would have explained a little more why she is the way she is.
I found the acting to be very believable. Kaitlyn Dever perfectly fits the role as this fake victim opportunist with a driving force to keep up her lies. The last scene just re-enforces just how profoundly annoying and hateful she must have been to people who knew her.
It's a good job we are more attuned now to people's fake attitudes. Although scammers still continue to ruin people's lives.
