After hearing and reading so many mixed reviews, I have finally convinced myself to start watching this series. I'm not one to write reviews on here, but I would love to give this show some credit. I have read the Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and I have read The Silmarillion (after many attempts). It was difficult coming into this show with an open mind. I grew up watching Peter Jackson's movies - I still go back and watch the extended versions every year. A LOTR marathon is absolutely necessary. And those movies are definitely a hard act to follow. But this series is not a remake of the original trilogy. It's set long before the events of the trilogy.
Because of all the other reviews, I decided it was best to clear my mind of any high expectations. I'm glad I did.
I think the show is visually stunning. The music is gorgeous, and there are performances in here that I find compelling and highly entertaining. The only reason I took away two stars from what I think would give this a perfect 10 out of 10, is the pacing. There are times where I feel like this show has dragged on and I'm just waiting for it to get to the action. Some of the scenes just feel like filler and don't really seem necessary. As a huge Apocalypse Now fan (my favourite film actually), I chuckled when Adar was introduced himself. The "River" dialogue is NEARLY identical when Captain Willard meets Colonel Kurtz in Apocalypse Now.
As of right now, my favourite characters are Nori Brandyfoot (Markella Kavenagh), I think the actress does an incredible job. The relationship between her community, her family, and The Stranger are so heartfelt and engaging, I'd say that these are probably my favourite scenes from the series so far. My other favourite character in this show is Durin (Owain Arthur). I always loved the dwarves. Gimli was my favourite character in the Lord of the rings movies, I love the hobbit movies a lot. Despite how many people chewed them out for being too cartoony and childish, Arthur did such an incredible job, keeping the proud and stubborn personalities that usually come with the dwarf characters.
The elves. Absolutely, you have characters that were portrayed by great, if not, legendary actors who did these characters such justice in the movies. When I hear Galadriel, Cate Blanchett will always come to mind. When I hear Elrond, Hugo Weaving. That being said, I am thoroughly enjoying the performances by these new actors. Very interesting takes on these characters. Elrond's relationship with Durin. Galadriel's relationships with Elrond, Elendil, Gil-galad, and Halbrand (yes, I know who he is).
I haven't started season two yet. Again, trying to keep an open mind when I go in and watch it. But it's so far I am enjoying the show. Slow, definitely a slow start, but I can't keep my eyes off of the screen. I think the show runners did an incredible job breathing life into the world, the characters, and the lore. There are Tolkien fanatics who love the show, but also Tolkien fanatics who actually go out of their way to rip the show a new one. The same way Peter Jackson fans go about expressing their opinions.
At the end of the day, you're either going to enjoy a movie or a show, or you're not. Or maybe in between. There are going to be parts that you are mesmerized by, and moments that make you cringe. It's your opinion, and your opinion is not wrong. If you did not enjoy the show, cool. If you did enjoy the show, also cool. I am enjoying the show. I am glad I took the time to watch it, And I look forward to seeing how the second season plays out.

This film is absolutely incredible! The concept is brilliant, the execution is hysterical, but most importantly, the characters are lovable.
Ryan Barrett's electrifying performance as Dale Domazar balanced beautifully with Liv Collins' hysterical "Karen-esque" performance as Kallie Jones. My favourite sequence was the duo's face-off with "Mr. Mort" (Matt Griffin). It had me crying.
Shout out to the DP, Mr. MacLaughlin, the film is stunning to look at. Bravo to the entire cast and crew.
The film as a whole does an amazing job of taking the concept of a death cult and making it a dark comedy.
I cannot wait to see what Collingwood Film Company does next.
