The name of the Tyga character "Yummy" is the name of real reputed Chicago gang member Robert "Yummy" Sandifer killed by his own gang at 11 years old.

Michael Ealy was offered the chance to reprise his role as Ricky Nash, the character he played in the first two "Barbershop" movies. Ice Cube claimed in an interview that Ealy was interested in co-starring in the sequel until he read the script. Cube reported that Ealy was displeased with the new direction the screenwriters were taking the film, and was disgusted by the dialogue and additional characters. Ealy allegedly said that this the new film was not the Barbershop (2002) he knew, and it tarnished the image and meaning of the original two films. Common was cast as an all new character and love interest for Terri, and the Ricky Nash character was written out of the final draft of the screenplay.

Elizabeth Dozier, who plays Principal Paula Walker in the film, was actually the real life former principal of Chicago's Fenger High School. She and her high school had previously been featured in the documentary miniseries Chicagoland (2014).
