Who asked for this?!

Why was this made? Why did they think it was a good idea to remake this? Why does it take the plot of the original film and throw it out the window? Why does it look like an uninspired, totally predictable, and an overall sorry excuse of a horror film?! It's 2020, people! A new decade is already here... STOP REMAKING STUFF THAT DOESN'T NEED TO BE REMADE!!

So get this: it's a remake of the film that is a remake of the Japanese Horror film: Ju-On: The Grudge (fantastic movie, BTW) and they took that and made it into one of the most predictable stupid films ever. And it's already 2020, and I thought unnecessary remakes were outlawed (they should be). I don't even see who is the target audience of this film, and I don't see who will watch this film a second time.

Weak Storyline, Bad Cinematography, and Unnecessary Jump Scares makes this film not worth your money. What a complete disaster! TERRIBLE film!!

This movie makes no sense

Good photography and direction but the script makes no sense. From the beginning to the end I asked myself: why this is happening? What's going on here? I was a fan of the original one, the original story and the turn at the end made a great movie. So why this?

Awful

The writers behind this should hang their heads in shame. I was looking for a decent horror of 2020 and this was recommended The plot of the film goes like this... dialogue/creepy music/aaaaaagggh uuugghhhh/insert some 'horror' (not connected with anything)/repeat 15 times/end film. Rubbish.

I created an IMDb account just so that I could leave a 1 star review for this movie

Dull, messy and predictable. With scenes (and characters) that serve no purpose other than to pad out what feels like an eternity of an only 97 minute long film. An awful movie in it's own right, never mind comparing it to it's predecessors.

Horror Movie Garbage to start off 2020

Good: There really is not much good to say about this movie except that the acting isn't awful from Lin Shaye and John Cho.

Bad: Messy writing with convoluted plot lines with time frame switches from 2004-2006, cannot focus on one story at a time. There is barely any story and relies heavily on jump scares. There are so many bland scenes and an annoying ominous score in the background to create an atmosphere but utterly fails. There are also random cinematographic shots that provide no purpose other than to extend the runtime.

Overall: This is one of the worst horror movies I have seen in a long time that is awful and entirely unnecessary. The plot clearly sat at a desk and is now only being produced to make a profit from a low budget. The story does not add up to much or provide any additional lore and has no significant themes. No entertainment value from this!

The Curse

Detective Muldoon (Andrea Riseborough) moves to a small town in Pensylvannia with her son Burke (John J. Hansen) to work in the local Police Department. She is assigned to be partner of Detective Goodman (Demián Bichir), who has recently lost his partner Detective Wilson (William Sadler) that was obsessed by a murder case. When Muldoon and Goodman find the remains of a woman in a car in a closed road, Muldoon realizes that her address was the same of the murder case Wilson was investigating. She decides to investigate the house and soon she learns that there is a curse for those who enter in the house.

"The Grudge" (2020) is a horror movie based on the vengeful spirit from the excellent "Ju-on" (2002) and the American version "The Grudge" (2004). The cinematography is uncomfortable and the viewer startles in a couple of scenes and in the end, it is a reasonable entertainment. The conclusion is predictable. My vote is five.

I'd rather comb the ghost's hair for 100 minutes. It's only the 2nd day & my 2020 is already a horrible mess.

Don't buy the 4.3 rating, it's more 6-6.5!

Went into this seeing the 4.3 rating and being like aww man it's gonna suck, it's really not that bad, the film does a lot of time jumping around but you can follow it, the story line is mehhh, but theres a lot of scares, cringe moments, anticipation, it's not a 4.3! Watch it alone, late at night with headphones on and you will enjoy!

It's definitely not a 10 or a 1 get a grip reviewers

Basically it's a film that seems to rely on one jump scare scenario after another. The story is basic and not really intelligent. It's instantly forgettable. I have not seen the original so I am reviewing this as a stand alone film. If you want to watch this with your mates with a few beers it's perfect. The film is totally predictable and there is nothing new here. It serves a purpose for those who want a night in and stay up late because there is nothing else on. I don't get the 1 stars though as it's not that bad but it's never a 10. I think a 5 is fair and I would ignor the extreme reviews on either end of the scale. If you don't take horror to seriously then give it a go.

Not THAT bad

Holy crap, people love jumping on a bandwagon to absolutely drag a movie. I especially doubt many of you actually enjoying the horror genre. What you were expecting from a nearly twenty year old franchise? I'm seriously surprised they haven't gone to space with Ju-on. Honestly, this one isn't as bad as the cool kids will lead you to believe. It honestly tells a really nice ghost story with some pretty credible folks infront and behind the camera.

THE GRUDGE 1.5

I see some people here calling this a remake and I'm thinking "Where they even paying attention!?!". This movie is a sequel and takes place during the same timeline of the 2004 version and the years 2005 and 2006. Only this time the curse has been brought to the US by the first nurse that was taking care of the elderly lady from the first movie. Anyways, I have to say the editing is a mess and most of the characters are lifeless, but the actors did their best with what was given. I actually like the cast and I think Lin Shaye and Jacki Weaver are the highlights of the film. Its biggest mistake was not bringing back the iconic ghosts that fans have grown to love. This is their franchise.

Begrudged

This played out like a soft reboot, similar to Rings (sequel from The Ring, which ignored The Ring Two). It clearly exists in the same universe as the previous three American releases, but with time between them and other characters into the mix (plus new audiences watching), it kind of throws elements at you that the previous films had. Therein lies the problem.

Although this may be the slightly superior film to Rings, it also was a less necessary sequel. When you look back at what you saw, you ask yourself how the pitch meeting went to green-lighting this installment. I mean, what was the lure that got them to say this was worthy? Rings happened to evolve and modernize its story in a very sensical manner, but The Grudge didn't really breathe new life... and when it tried to, it fell a little flat on its face.

I don't know how much money was thrown at this, but it felt a little too produced. A lot of it had to do with the fact that it was brought to the States. I know that little Asian ghost girl horror was so two decades ago, but having that traditional Japanese setting that stemmed from the Ju-On series (shot on a taller frame and on film) gave the previous movies a bit of a rawer, grittier chill factor that this one loses. Not to mention the way they edit the jump scares this time around is Rings-cheesy. They are by far the worst parts of the movie, sadly enough. Props for the R-rating and I think that was excellently used, but I don't think the tone matched the maturer audience that was watching it... as it still had a PG-13 feel to the scares.

The thing that I liked most about this movie though was the nonlinear storytelling. They borrowed this from The Grudge 2, although that was kind of a twist in that film that you were jumping different timelines. I liked it so much from that one that you really had to work hard in what you were watching, and all it had to take from this movie was removing the big white lettering telling the year that it was in on shots. The timelessness feel kind of became a theme to the movie, and I think if they made the audience work a little harder at it then it would have a nice full circle feeling to it. But alas, you are always reminded where you are at in the film, so it's not quite as fun. Nevertheless, it was a cool ride to flash back and forward, though it was all exposition vomit anyway. I could have allowed them to stretch the film another 15-20 minutes for more present day substance if they could have found a way to fill it, but for what it did I'd say it was okay.

The movie whimpers out at the end for me though, and that was really where I wish it had something else to say about the franchise's evolution when it plainly couldn't. I think that's where it hits its weakest stride. I can imagine sequels to this happening, but they just won't be as fun or freaky unless they return to Tokyo again and have Kayako and Toshio again, throwing less money at it and making it raw and gritty if they're able to. This is a skipper, even for die-hard Grudgies.

One last note: This movie has the intentionally funniest scene transition since Napoleon Dynamite's "It's a sledgehammer" moment. That alone was actually worth the price of admission.

What a waste

2020 MOVIE #1:

THE GRUDGE (2020)

Wow is all I can say. I never thought they'd make a horror flick worse than The Grudge 2 (2006). Well I was wrong, consider me blown away for all the wrong reasons. This movie is absolute garbage. It's not even bad enough to be good it's inexcusably boring bad. What's wrong you might ask. Well the movie has a great cast and is filled with solid performances. The screenplay isn't too bad and has some interesting touches concerning the mythology and its pretty gory mostly unnecessary but still appreciated. The big problem here is the abysmal direction. Set between the first 2 American films it concerns a woman who brought the curse home with him from Japan and than ends up murdering her family which curses her house. During the film we are introduced to a group of characters who come into contact with that house and are killed one by one. Nicolas Pesce director of the acclaimed Eyes of my mother doesn't know how to execute a single scare in the entire 93 minute run time. Theres no real atmosphere. The film is clunky, sloppy and boring. And because of the amateur cut you can't really experience any engagement with the stories or the characters. What a way to start the year. I can pretty much say that I may stop watching movies if I see anything worse than this, this year. Just atrocious and embarrassing and I'm talking to you Sam Raimi for having a hand in this.

flat

The movie follows events in 2004 to 2006 in a small Pennsylvanian town. Nurse Fiona Landers brings the spirit from Japan to America. There are police detectives Muldoon (Andrea Riseborough), Goodman (Demián Bichir), and Wilson (William Sadler). Peter (John Cho) and Nina Spencer (Betty Gilpin) are a married real estate agent couple. Lorna Moody (Jacki Weaver) arrives to assist the struggling Mathesons (Lin Shaye, Frankie Faison).

Nobody cares that this ties in with the rest of the Grudge franchise other than the Japanese house. So the start is the only truly interesting part and then it slowly grinds to a halt. The scrambled timeline and the multiple interconnected stories somehow saps the tension out of the movie. The excellent cast has no chance. The jump scares aren't scary. It's all very flat.

Why was this movie made?

Typically sequels are done because the audience will support it. And reboots because something can be improved. This movie offered NOTHING new, not in terms of story or of innovation. The acting was mediocre, like they knew this movie was going to be a flop. I'm baffled as to why John Cho accepted this role because he's better than this. Another thing that was really annoying was the timeline clashing with props. 2004-2006 timeline, with TVs and Cars from The early 1980s. This made no sense. It was a mess. Don't waste your money.

Not bad

Greetings from Lithuania.

While i'm not a big fan of "The Grudge" series, i kinda liked this film more then i thought i will be after seeing 4,2 score on this site - which is not a good sign to say a least to begin with. Yet after finishing it, i can say that "The Grudge" is a very moody picture - its a almost always dark in there, and i doesn't show you many scary moments like i some other horror movies, yet its a very creepy movie. Performances were OK for this movie, as well character - and there much more of them that i thought it will be.

Overall, i did enjoy "The Grudge". Its a very creepy horror movie that kinda sneaks on you.

Total waste of time

Boring movie and probably has the worst jump scares that wouldn't scare you at all. The plot is scattered and unorganized. It's more like just copying the idea of that successful Japanese Ju-On movie and turned it into a trashy tasteless version.

Not even close to the originals

So this movie is not Ju-On. Not even close to it.

The story places itself in it's universe, it uses it's known sound effect and the idea of the curse. That's all.

Otherwise, you are going to see terrible actors without character. There's is no character arc at all. The story is just a CHEAP (with big letters) ripoff...

It's all about weak jumpscares (you even know when to expect it as they turn the sound off to warn you) and plotholes ofc.

I would not make horror movies as it's not my style, but there was a scene in a wardrobe.. How an Earth did anyone on set thought that it was the right setup?

They missed everything that made Ju-On good and put their amateur thinking into this movie instead.

Not worth the money. (There were 2 people walking out of it.)

Btw, the cinematography, the editing, the acting, the directing (especially) was just awful.

I wouldn't recommend it to anyone even if you liked any of the Grudge movies.
