Welcome to Cozy Anime Corner , your go-to place for finding the perfect anime to brighten your day! Every month I’ll highlight a comfy series with low stakes, calm vibes and people I wish I knew in real life. Nothing says summertime like baseball, and Catch Me At the Ballpark! wants to take you — yes, you — out to the ballgame! But this isn’t an edge-of-your-seat sports anime with bombastic action sequences. Catch Me At the Ballpark! is a slice-of-life anime about the people in the stands cheering on their favorite players, and the people who work hard to make sure they all have a fantastic time — like the tireless uriko, or beer girls, who pour drinks in the stands with a smile. Labeling “Catch me at the Ballpark” as a sports anime does it an injustice. The reason is simply because its main focus is not on engaging sport sequences, nail-biting moments of competition, or the thrill of victory and defeat. Instead, it revolves around the mundane and small aspects of what actually makes a baseball game special—the experience of attending the game in a stadium, not only to cheer and support your team with thousands of people you don’t even know, but also as a place where one can feel they belong.

Sports anime typically follow a particular formula where you see a group or an individual work their way up to success in their given sport. You see their trials and tribulations and you also witness a lot of whichever particular sport is the focus of the anime. How else are you going to get hyped with all of the competitive nature amongst everyone? Well, what if there was an anime that takes that formula and flips it on its head. What if there was a sports anime that foregoes everything about the actual sport and instead focuses on various surrounding aspects that make up a sport? Catch Me at the Ballpark! is technically about a baseball team. You will get to see some plays here and there and a few characters get a bit of time to stand out, but the majority of the show focuses on the unsung heroes of a major sports team.
