The Synopsis says "A modern re-imagining of the stories that lead up to the 'Wizard of Oz'." Does that mean that it takes place in dull, dreary Kansas before the tornado, or do we actually get to see stories set in the magical Land of Oz?

We have been told that the Beast Forever has appeared in various forms in the past, is this identity just a temporary one that is being used? In the season 1 finale it appears that Roquat, the flayed, and the first person imprisoned in the Prison of the Abject, is freed when Dorothy released all of the prisoners there. Roquat is the name of a re-occurring villain in Baum's books used for the Gnome King who is described as immortal. Is he actually the Beast Forever or just a temporary form that is being taken in the season 1 finale?
