A CBS sitcom in development from Black-ish creator Kenya Barris and comic Mike Epps is experiencing online backlash since it was announced, as it’s set against the backdrop of the wildfire-devastated area of Altadena, where residents are still reeling from this January’s deadly and destructive wildfires.
The project — which is in its early stages and has no cast attached beyond Epps, nor any on-air commitment from CBS — would follow two brothers who move in with their late grandmother’s caretaker when their plans fall apart as they try to sell her property in Altadena, an area of L.A. that saw major devastation in January’s deadly Eaton fire; that blaze, one of several over a few weeks in January across L.A., killed at least 19 people and destroyed over 9,000 structures. It would mark a return to broadcast TV for BET Studios principal Barris, who has focused on...

The Television Critics Association has been doling out prizes for over 40 years now, with its first awards show in 1985 honoring The Jewel in the Crown and The Cosby Show. Fast-forward to this week, and the 2025 winners consist of The Pitt and The Studio (one win for Best Comedy Series). Since the TCA's champions are announced prior to the Emmys every year, and cover the same June 1-May 31 eligibility period, awards prognosticators often look to the organization as a pivotal bellwether on the campaign trail.
But that might be a fool's errand.
Over the past 25 years, the TCA Awards and the Emmys have only agreed 40 percent of the time for Best Comedy Series,...

Laurence Fishburne might be best known for his movie roles, but he's had a prestigious TV career as well. The actor has won six Emmy awards since he started back in the early 1970s and has appeared in a slew of well-known series, playing Cowboy Curtis in "Pee-wee's Playhouse," Jack Crawford in NBC's "Hannibal," and Earl Johnson in ABC's "Black-ish." Though he didn't win an Emmy for what was at the time his biggest TV role, Fishburne also starred in the CBS crime drama show "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" for multiple seasons, replacing the series' previous star William Petersen.
Petersen's Gil Grissom had been the series lead ever since the "CSI" pilot back in 2000. But with the actor set to depart the show in December 2008, the show's creatives pulled off a real coup by landing Fishburne as a replacement. Tracee Ellis Ross is known for starring on hit television shows like “Black-ish” and “Girlfriends.” But now, audiences are getting up close and personal with Ross in her hit Roku Original series, “Solo Traveling with Tracee Ellis Ross.” The series debuted to rave reviews last month and quickly became the most-watched unscripted series in Roku history, earning a Season 2 renewal.
Ross has always adored traveling, but it took a moment for the Emmy-nominated actress to realize that fans were flocking to her social media accounts to get a glimpse at her stunning vacations. “I came home from my regular summer trip that I do with my friends every year,” she tells Variety at the Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival (Mvaaff), where the series screened to a sold-out crowd on Friday night. “And the guy that was helping me at the airport was like, ‘Girl, every year we wait...

David Ellison finally has his prize.
On Thursday, the Skydance Media founder closed the $8 billion merger with Paramount Global that he orchestrated, enduring political turbulence and skepticism about the viability of the company’s TV and movie empire for over a year. In order for the deal to pay off, Ellison, who will serve as chairman and CEO of the newly rechristened Paramount Skydance, must maintain strong partnerships with the creative community. Before the sale, Paramount has lacked the financial resources of competitors like Disney and Netflix, but it has been the home of top talent. Keeping them happy and busy cooking up ideas for new film, TV and streaming franchises will be critically important if Paramount Skydance wants to outmaneuver other studios.

Marcus Scribner is the latest actor to join the upcoming Blue Bloods spin-off, Boston Blue. Variety reports that the Black-ish star will play Jonah Silver, a member of the Silver family, many of whom have been cast. The character's description hints at a dedicated lawman, much like other family members. He is "the youngest member of the Silver family and is in law enforcement like his mother and sisters, each of whom is formidable in their own ways," reads the official character description. "Always the cool kid growing up, Jonah carries himself with confidence and swagger in all situations, so he’s naturally frustrated at being a rookie cop on the sidelines of the city’s biggest investigations."
The Silver family tree consists of Mae Silver, Jonah's mother, who works as a district attorney. Gloria Ruben was cast in the role. Ernie Hudson plays Edwin Peters, Jonah's grandfather, who is a reverend.

Any television lover will tell you that there’s just something special about cast-directed episodes. While it’s no easy feat, and not necessarily a job for every actor, seeing a show through the eyes of someone who’s on it every day often feels like a treat. Earlier this year, Ghostsfans were treated to a delightful episode helmed by series lead Rose McIver, a longtime goal for the actress finally realized. When I spoke to her for that episode, she admitted that she’d given quite a few of her co-stars the itch to get behind the camera, in one way or another, themselves. Often capturing a plethora of behind-the-scenes content, Román Zaragoza told me last week he’d jump at the opportunity to direct, and back in March, Danielle Pinnock told me she’s writing a spec script while they’re on hiatus.

Looking for a truly original movie with a plot that keeps you guessing? Well, you won’t find it in Prime Video’s new release, “G20.” However, if you’re in the mood for a fun, predictable action movie—the kind you can watch without having to think too hard—”G20″ delivers guaranteed entertainment. It’s one of those movies that, precisely because it’s predictable, remains enjoyable, and its formula continues to be used time and time again.

Set against the backdrop of the G20 summit in Cape Town, South Africa, “G20” weaves a narrative of terrorism, betrayal, and the unwavering determination of a leader resolved to protect her family and the world.

Anthony Anderson took over Good Morning America, and Michael Strahan couldn’t do anything to stop him.
The recent GMA episode featured the Black-ish and G20 actor stopping by to chat with Michael, George Stephanopoulos, Rebecca Jarvis, and Lara Spencer.
Things got off to a hot start as Anthony shared that he showed up at the studio around the same time as the staff.
“I showed up when y’all showed up. I never been on this hour of Good Morning America!” he exclaimed as Michael tried to introduce him.
“You never cease to amaze us. You always got somethin’!” the GMA anchor told him as the interview began.
Anthony revealed that the car came to pick him up at his hotel at 6:45 a.m., but he had just walked into the hotel at 6:30 a.m., putting him in what Michael called “dangerous territory.”

Marsai Martin’s transition from child producer to 20-year-old mogul has made her wise beyond her years
“I was still so small. I didn’t even know what I was really walking into. I didn’t feel nervous at all,” Marsai Martin tells Variety, looking back at her early years in the business. “Nine-year-old me had the confidence to walk into any room.”
That self-assurance helped the gifted actor make history, becoming the youngest person to sign a first-look deal at a studio at 14 years old. The pact came about after the preteen produced a comedy, “Little,” that she pitched to Universal when she was nine. Martin co-starred with Regina Hall and Issa Rae in the 2019 film, which was a modest hit, earning $48 million at the global box office.
Now 20, Martin admits that the subsequent years in the rough-and-tumble entertainment business left some bruises. She scored with the 2022 sports comedy “Fantasy Football” on Paramount+,...

With a legacy spanning decases, it's still inconceivable that anyone could dislike "The Princess Bride." Released in 1987, the fantasy romantic comedy was written by William Goldman (already a two-time Academy Award-winner for his work on "All the President's Men" and "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid"), directed by Rob Reiner (then best known for directing "Stand By Me" the year prior), and featured a miraculously stacked cast. Though it did just okay at the box office, the film has since become a cult classic that -- in large part through the continued success of this cast -- retroactively vindicates those who were early champions of its brilliance.
Whether senior actor or child star, veteran of the screen or relative newcomer, everyone with a role in the core ensemble of "The Princess Bride" brings something wildly unexpected to their individual role no matter how small. Incidentally, the vast majority of these...

Earlier this month, Netflix revealed that Black Mirror was returning with a trailer that hinted at the themes of each of the new six episodes from the anthology series. Today, the streamer honored a Black Mirror tradition and released a new trailer that reveals the titles of each episode and provides an overview of what we can expect from them. Additionally, every episode has its own poster, which you can check out in this article. The series is set to return on April 10.
The trailer for the new Black Mirror episodes makes it clear that AI will be a big theme, which makes perfect sense given what the show is about. The season will kick off with "Common People," an episode that starts with a tragedy: Amanda (Rashida Jones) goes to the emergency room and while she fights for her life, her husband Mike (Chris O'Dowd) signs her up to...

Warning: The following contains major spoilers for Yellowjackets Season 3: Episode 6, “Thanksgiving (Canada).”
Fans of Showtime’s feminist horror series Yellowjackets have been dying for answers to two major questions: who will the girls eat while stranded in the woods and how will survivors of that horrific plane crash eventually find their way home? While larger mysteries still remain, the latest episode brings us one step closer to uncovering the truth.
After an excruciating murder/execution, the girls “honor” Coach Ben Scott (Steven Krueger) with a ritualistic feast which descends into chaos. In the present day timeline, Misty (Christina Ricci) continues to investigate Lottie (Simone Kessell)’s murder while Van (Lauren Ambrose) begins to wonder who Taissa (Tawny Cypress) really is.
The episode’s final moments leave us on one hell of a cliffhanger while taking the 1997 timeline in a bloody new direction.

Because the world does not feel dystopian enough, “Black Mirror” is finally releasing its Season 7 premiere date. The sci-fi anthology from Charlie Brooker will return on April 10 with six new episodes.
This new season will contain a previously announced followup to the Emmy-winning “USS Callister” starring Cristin Milioti. Fittingly, the trailer for this new season starts with Milioti’s Lieutenant Cole gasping as an unseen voice says “We’d like to welcome you back.”
The trailer then cycles between clips of wild scenarios that are never fully explained. One minute, a man is putting on a Batman mask. The next, Issa Rae is being transported into a black-and-white world filled with AI people. Still the next, Rashida Jones collapses like a powered off robot while pitching cereal in front of a class of children. You know, classic “Black Mirror” stuff.

Kenya Barris is telling an American story, one can of soda after another.
In a new six-minute short film, the writer, director and showrunner, known for his work behind the ABC series “Black-ish,” helps Coca-Cola show the resonance its broader portfolio of beverages have had on Americans for more than half a century. The new commercial, called “Westside’s Finest,” features Barris, Omari Hardwick, Lionel Boyce, Lauren London and Nelson Franklin as the family that runs a local convenience store changes with the times and eras. There are also appearances by Coke, Sprite, Mr. Pibb, Honest Kids — and even New Coke and Tab.
By the time the piece ends, viewers may feel like they sat through a mini-series — one that is made for modern attention spans.
“It’s counterintuitive, but I think people do like to watch longer-form commercials when they’re done in an interesting way,” says Barris, during a recent interview.

Eva Longoria's John Wick involvement is a surprising but pivotal part of the iconic action franchise. Known for her work in Hollywood spanning the past few decades, Longoria has acted in, produced for, and directed countless films and television shows in the English and Spanish languages. Longoria is immediately recognizable for her acting in the award-winning comedy-drama Desperate Housewives, the well-established soap opera The Young and the Restless, and nostalgic films like The Heartbreak Kid (2007) and Over Her Dead Body (2008).
While many know Longoria from her acting achievements, she has just as much experience behind the scenes as she does out in the limelight. Black-ish had some surprising celebrities as guest stars over the show’s eight-season run. Because Dre Johnson (Anthony Anderson) worked at an advertising agency, there was a natural avenue to bring in figures from the worlds of music, sports, and even politics as cameos. Despite having the incredibly funny main cast of Black-ish, new faces were always welcomed to bring a different flavor to the episode. A few of the guest stars had preexisting relationships with the creator, Kenya Barris, or stars of Black-ish, like Tracee Ellis Ross, but many guests did not.
Black-ish used comedy to explore issues of race, identity, and politics through the lens of Dre and his suburban Black family, and many stars wanted to be a part of Black-ish’s cultural conversation, with many even playing heightened versions of themselves. Some of these guest stars appear in some of Black-ish’s most powerful episodes.

Emmy-nominated and Oscar-shortlisted documentarian Catherine Gund’s new film “Paint Me a Road Out of Here” tells the story of how art and the women’s prison system intersect. Gund centers on the legacy of late artist Faith Ringgold, whose 1971 painting “For the Women’s House” made it from Rikers Island to the Brooklyn Museum. The 50-year journey for Ringgold’s masterpiece to be placed in a museum is at the crux of the feature. Ringgold died in 2024; she was 93.
The official synopsis reads: “A great painting tells a compelling story. When its provenance deepens that story, it becomes an extraordinary and impactful performance piece. Emmy-nominated and Oscar-shortlisted documentarian and activist Catherine Gund tracks the labyrinthine ordeal born by Faith Ringgold’s 1971 painting ‘For the Women’s House’ — originally created for the women incarcerated on Rikers Island, then relegated to mishandling, defacing, and deep storage. Can “Matlock” crack the case of the disappearing SAG Awards broadcast nominations? The CBS drama has been an out-of-the-box hit this fall, earning acclaim for star Kathy Bates and even already landing a Season 2 pickup. The folks at CBS Studios are bullish enough on its awards chances — particularly for the beloved Bates — that they’ve made it a priority in the kudo space this year.
And honestly, as it should be. Kathy Bates is an Oscar winner (for 1991’s “Misery”) and has earned three more Oscar noms since then — as recently as 2020, for “Richard Jewell.” The breadth of Bates’ work can be illustrated by her two wildly different Emmy wins: For sitcom “Two and a Half Men” in 2012 and the creepy series “American Horror Story” in 2014. Black-ish was a long-running sitcom about the lives of an upper-middle-class Black family living in a predominantly white neighborhood. Andre "Dre" Johnson (Anthony Anderson) grew up in Compton and worries his children are not in touch with their Black roots. While the show is a comedy, Black-ish also examines the nuances of Black identity. Many of Black-ish's best episodes address important, powerful issues.
Dre's perspective is almost always different from that of his wife, parents, children, and colleagues, leading to matters of race, family, and politics being discussed from multiple angles. Because Black-ish was generally a lighthearted comedy, when it delved into topics like police brutality, colorism, and women's health, the episodes carried even more weight. Luckily, the characters in Black-ish are played by talented actors who can deliver heartfelt scenes as well as humorous ones.

The fantasy comedy Little has dropped onto Netflix, adding another record-breaking hit to its digital library. This 2019 movie was executive produced by its young star, Marsai Martin, who plays a businessperson after she gets magically turned back into a child in the vein of Tom Hanks' Big; the adult version of her character, an unkind woman forced to self-evaluate by these events, is played by Regina Hall. Though Martin was initially hired as the executive producer for Little, she didn't want to stop there.
Living up to her reputation as one of Hollywood's most ambitious young actors, Martin sought to star in the film she created alongside Hall and Issa Rae. Additionally, before starring and producing Little, Martin was primarily famous for her role as Diane Johnson on ABC's hit sitcom Black-ish. Since Little and Black-ish, Martin has established herself as one of Hollywood's most prominent young talents, having worked...
