It follows a vengeful teenager named Joanna Lawrence, who reunites with her biological father, Michael Lawrence, and moves in with him. His new family consists of his new wife, Whitney Hughes, and her two sons. Posing as an innocent high school goer, she makes her way into the family, finding opportunities to seek revenge on her stepmother. As Whitney is reeling from the devastating deaths of her mother and grandmother, she desires to get close to her father and get rid of any obstacle that comes in her way.

The thriller The Stepdaughter, which was released last year on Tubi, is all set to air on the Lifetime channel this month. The film, which stars Cassidey Fralin, Blue Kimble, and Annie Ngozi Ilonzeh in lead roles, received a 5.3 rating on IMDb.

It is a psychological thriller on the lines of movies like Orphan, which sees a family being haunted by the dad’s stepdaughter. Directed by Chris Stokes, who has directed many thrillers, the movie will be premiering on Lifetime this Saturday, August 30 (via Metacritic).

As Deadline reported exclusively today, several hundred employees are being laid off globally, with Disney Entertainment’s film and television marketing as well as television publicity, casting and development, as main targets.

According to sources, among those leaving is Eric Souliere, VP Casting for 20th Television, who had been working on Ryan Murphy’s American Horror Story and 9-1-1 series. He is not going far, though, as the former casting director will be transitioning to casting on the new spinoff, 9-1-1: Nashville, I hear.

Because the world does not feel dystopian enough, “Black Mirror” is finally releasing its Season 7 premiere date. The sci-fi anthology from Charlie Brooker will return on April 10 with six new episodes.

This new season will contain a previously announced followup to the Emmy-winning “USS Callister” starring Cristin Milioti. Fittingly, the trailer for this new season starts with Milioti’s Lieutenant Cole gasping as an unseen voice says “We’d like to welcome you back.”

The trailer then cycles between clips of wild scenarios that are never fully explained. One minute, a man is putting on a Batman mask. The next, Issa Rae is being transported into a black-and-white world filled with AI people. Still the next, Rashida Jones collapses like a powered off robot while pitching cereal in front of a class of children. You know, classic “Black Mirror” stuff.

Exclusive: Tracee Ellis Ross (American Fiction) is in production in New York City on Blow the Horn, an indie psychological drama marking the first narrative feature from writer-director Nacho Arenas.

The project is an adaptation of Bajo Terapia, the acclaimed Argentinian play by Matias del Federico, which has previously been adapted by Spanish filmmaker Gerado Herrero. Others in the cast include Wrenn Schmidt (For All Mankind), Dallas Roberts (Monsters), Joshua Boone (A Jazzman’s Blues), Ken Leung (Industry), and Lake Bell (Mother Couch).

Set in contemporary New York, the story follows three couples summoned to a group therapy session with their psychologist, where personal secrets and simmering tensions are exposed. The plot takes a strange turn when the hot shot therapist unexpectedly fails to show up, leaving the couples to confront their issues without guidance.

Peter “Navy” Tuiasosopo, an actor who appeared in “Necessary Roughness,” “12 Rounds,” “Street Fighter” and “New Girl,” died Monday in Phoenix at the age of 61.

His son Manoah Peter Tuiasosopo confirmed the death on Facebook.

“With a heavy heart, my family and I want to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers. Our father Peter N. Tuiasosopo passed away this morning at 3:16am. My dad lived an amazing life and in no way does his impact stop here. We will continue to live with him in spirit, and as saddened as we are, he is without a doubt in Heaven with his brothers, sisters, parents, daughter, and Jesus, and no longer in pain,” Manoah wrote.

Manoah told TMZ Tuiasosopo’s death was due to heart complications.

Kenya Barris is telling an American story, one can of soda after another.

In a new six-minute short film, the writer, director and showrunner, known for his work behind the ABC series “Black-ish,” helps Coca-Cola show the resonance its broader portfolio of beverages have had on Americans for more than half a century. The new commercial, called “Westside’s Finest,” features Barris, Omari Hardwick, Lionel Boyce, Lauren London and Nelson Franklin as the family that runs a local convenience store changes with the times and eras. There are also appearances by Coke, Sprite, Mr. Pibb, Honest Kids — and even New Coke and Tab.

By the time the piece ends, viewers may feel like they sat through a mini-series — one that is made for modern attention spans.

“It’s counterintuitive, but I think people do like to watch longer-form commercials when they’re done in an interesting way,” says Barris, during a recent interview.

A musical reunion becomes the gig from Hell in the new trailer for The Ballad of Wallis Island. Carey Mulligan stars in the new comedy from director James Griffiths. Focus Features will release the film in theaters on February 28, 2025. Griffiths is a veteran of TV, producing and directing series like Black-ish, Stumptown, and A Million Little Things. The Ballad of Wallis Island is his second feature film, after directing the Nick Frost/Rashida Jones dance comedy Cuban Fury in 2014.

Black-ish had some surprising celebrities as guest stars over the show’s eight-season run. Because Dre Johnson (Anthony Anderson) worked at an advertising agency, there was a natural avenue to bring in figures from the worlds of music, sports, and even politics as cameos. Despite having the incredibly funny main cast of Black-ish, new faces were always welcomed to bring a different flavor to the episode. A few of the guest stars had preexisting relationships with the creator, Kenya Barris, or stars of Black-ish, like Tracee Ellis Ross, but many guests did not.

Black-ish used comedy to explore issues of race, identity, and politics through the lens of Dre and his suburban Black family, and many stars wanted to be a part of Black-ish’s cultural conversation, with many even playing heightened versions of themselves. Some of these guest stars appear in some of Black-ish’s most powerful episodes.

Emmy-nominated and Oscar-shortlisted documentarian Catherine Gund’s new film “Paint Me a Road Out of Here” tells the story of how art and the women’s prison system intersect. Gund centers on the legacy of late artist Faith Ringgold, whose 1971 painting “For the Women’s House” made it from Rikers Island to the Brooklyn Museum.
