Hallmark's 2024 Hanukkah on the Rock's was one of the better releases this season. The leading actress, Stacey Farber who plays Tory was very good and hopefully we'll see her in more leading roles in Hallmark movies, but the real star of this movies was Marc Summers as Sam Rosen. My wife and I were pleasantly surprised to see him in this movie because we were fans of his old Food Network show Unwrapped for many years. He's was superb in this movie. We enjoyed the story a lot despite several tropes, because it was really heartwarming and festive and a nice change of pace watching mature adults enjoying Hanukkah inspired cocktails in a grown up's bar versus "hot cocoa stands" and "building snowmen". The only reason I'm giving this 8 stars versus 10 is because the brief "misunderstanding" trope towards the very end really felt like a square peg in a round hole and was totally contrived and unnecessary in this movie.

As a 90s baby, I was a big fan of both Degrassi: The Next Generation and The Secret Life of the American Teenager. When I found out that Stacey Farber and Daren Kagasoff were the leads for this Hannukah film, I knew I had to watch it. When I saw Marc Summers playing sweet grandpa Sam, I started smiling ear to ear. After my viewing, I am happy to report that I loved it! This little movie was full of charm, tradition, community, family, romance...all the things that my Hallmark faves are known for. As a Christian who celebrates Christmas and the birth of Christ, I thoroughly enjoyed this Hannukah film. At its core, it had themes that everyone can relate to and enjoy, whether they are religious or not. I hope Hallmark Channel will continue to cast Stacey Farber and Daren Kagasoff in future projects because they are great actors with a sweet chemistry. Viewers will find themselves rooting for them every time.
I watch just abouy all the new hallmark movies each year, this was already on my list with much knowledge of what it was abouy or who was in it. Then I heard Marc Summers on a radio show promoting the movie and then I was even more intrigued to watch it and it did not disappoint! I really enjoyed this one, Marc summers was SO good! I heard him saying he's not an actor but I thought he did a great job!! All of the actors really did in this. It was one of my favorites this holiday season.

Here our lady MC loses her job at a law firm due to a merge and downsizing, and by a coincidence decides to work as a bartender for a while, as she had experience at the job while in college.
Of course, she doesn't want her parents to know, which is a little unhinged because she'd not looking for another job in the law immediately.
That's not the real focus of the movie, which contains plenty of interesting and sometimes amusing slice-of-Hanukkah life moments.
The writers came up with an interesting set of regulars at the bar, Rocky's, which serve for both plot activation and comic relief. Definitely worth a watch.

When hard-working attorney Tory (Stacey Farber) loses her job, she is given the opportunity to reevaluate her priorities through a local bar, which she helps turn into Hanukkah On The Rocks for the eight days of Hanukkah. Hanging out with her along the way is Jay (Daren Kagasoff), a radiologist who is in Chicago for a few weeks to see his grandpa. The grandpa, Sam, is none other than Double Dare host Marc Summers. It was great to see him on screen.
The main element of this movie that works is family and community. We don't have any zany parents or unrelatable family members trying to be funny. Just regular people who want the best for their family and friends.
The love story was a little paint-by-numbers for me. Honestly, Jay was a little stiff. Like he was too cool for school, or something like that. Our leads bond over going through the motions at work, but I never felt like we got anything else between them, except proximity to each other, which was light. Sam brings the emotional elements when discussing his wife.
When the sister is decorating cookies, she has every finger of her hands covered in blue frosting, like a glove of blue frosting. This is not how anyone in the history of the world has frosted cookies. Nobody has a butter knife to spread the stuff? It's a joke that doesn't land.
Writing your novel on two years of cocktail napkins is a dumb idea. So is typing it on an old-timey typewriter whilst inside a bar. For two years of effort, I would have expected a little more.
Measuring Christmas Magic: It's a Hanakkah movie. No magical elements apparent.
Cast Kudos: Marc Summers as Grandpa Sam. He was really great in this on camera role. Looking through his profile, it seems like he's been a busy executive producer for sometime, so it was nice to see him on screen again. He definitely steals some scenes and interrupts some kisses..
Alternative movie titles: No suggestions. This title fits perfectly.

6.6 stars.
The best word to describe a story set in a bar with a bunch of random people celebrating Hanukkah is: strange. I can't imagine a bunch of bar flies would be acting like normal, upstanding, sober people all through the holidays while they're celebrating Hanukkah in a dive bar in the big city. Where is the raucous behavior and the lewd comments? Where are the loud drunken conversations that become so overbearing that you have to vacate the bar at some point? None of the realistic stuff that happens in bars actually takes place in this film. Everyone is on their best behavior. Everyone is quiet, everyone is easy-going. It's a dive bar in the middle of a city!
This is why you don't see movies like this, because it's completely unrealistic to imagine a bunch of drunkards hanging out in a bar all day every day getting along and singing Kum ba yah.
All the above outrageousness aside, it's not a bad fabrication.

This is a rare Hallmark movie where even the dialog associated with the obligatory plot points is executed in a way that doesn't sound cliche. The imaginative games at the bar are a lot of fun with more interesting and quirky supporting characters than usual. The leads are engaging and have good chemistry. The "bubby" and the grandfather are both exceptionally well played. The different dilemmas unfold in the usual Hallmark way but enough fun stuff is chocked into the middle that it all seems more natural somehow. I think the Hallmark genre of movies needs to be rated on their own scale with enjoyment being the main criterion. As such. I enjoyed Hanukkah on the Rocks thoroughly and rate it a 9/10.
This. This is what all of us watch Hallmark for. Or what we hope for as we watch. A Hanukkah movie ( or any movie) without the silly tropes and cliches - with people who seem real to us, people we recognize, people treated with dignity and who treat each other (and everybody else) with respect, patience, and kindness. Thank you.
The entire cast was above the norm. Every single one. Upbeat even through their difficulties, they managed to keep this in a positive frame and made us feel good - and our interest and time investment validated - a perfect holiday movie. Not being Jewish myself, it taught me things as the movie progressed. What could be better than all this. Again, thank you.

Very cute movie, but I had to give five stars because of the poor pronunciation of the Yiddish words. Chutzpah is not probounced " shutspah!" They could have and should have made a bit more effort to have dialogue coaches for the people who were supposedly Jewish and used these Yiddish phrases frequently.
No offense to Canada, but the attempt to communicate a sense of cultural Jewishness amongst the patrons of the bar just did not work. It really felt more like a white bread Canadian vibe. Still, I recommended because there are not many holiday films with a Hanukkah theme. Perfect film to watch while you are making your Hanukkah cookies, your latkes, and your. Sufganiyot.

I never like it when the lead loses her job right off the bat. It's too depressing especially for a Christmas movie. Well in this movie, Tory bounces up right away. Believe it or not, she goes from a lawyer to a part time bartender and she's perfect for the job. So is Stacey Farber. She is really growing on me as a Hallmark lead. She and the rest of the cast have good dialogue to work with that is upbeat and fun. For a while the story isn't that complex. Obviously there is a guy spending time in the bar trying to convince his grandfather to go back to Florida to be with the rest of the family. But the story doesn't need more than that for a while because it's about the people with Farber's Tory being the center of everything. It works.
There is a secret hanging over Tory's head in that she doesn't want to tell her parents she lost her job. You know that will do something to interfere with how things are going at the bar and with Jay. That and the fact Jay lives in Florida. And there is an additional little surprise conflict.
Farber and Daren Kagasoff have great chemistry. The acting is good.
There is an element about family that gets stronger in the second half. It even leads into a really good ending, although a lot of things get tied up pretty quickly. (I was surprised the one big thing isn't completely tied down. Usually Hallmark movies put bows on every possible thing for an HEA.)

Excellent writing with several chuckle-worthy moments. Overall a fresh movie with only minimal use of standard Hallmark tropes. Throughout the movie we are treated to a believable story, and several fun and original moments. Acting is very good and the lead couple is believable. Another aspect which I greatly appreciated is that there were no groan-worthy moments with unrealistic story elements. Kudos to the producers, writers and actors. And, I would stop writing here except that IMDB requires a ridiculous long minimum word/character count so I guess I will just keep typing until...wait for it.. now.

I'm not Jewish, I'm not a drinker and have never been to a bar, but i absolutely love this movie and will save it (I've already watched several times)! Stacey Farber is perfect in this role. I think this is third movie I've seen her starring in and she's been believable in each. I look forward to seeing her in more. I wasn't familiar with Daren Kagasoff but he played the grandson just right (I love his "calming" voice)! Marc Summers couldn't be more fitting for this role - loved him! Actually all the actors were great - seeming like a family! I loved the atmosphere and friendliness of the bar and would love being there even without a drink! 🤗

Tori thinks she is making partner at her law firm, but instead looses her job. She meets Jay when they both try to purchase the same specific Hanukkah candles for their respective grandparents. Jay is a radiologist in town to convince his grandfather Sam to move to Florida where the rest of his family lives. Sam is a regular at a local bar that Tori gets roped into being a temporary bartender at. She comes up with these fun Hanukkah themed events for the bar that brings the regulars together and brings in the local Jewish community...including eventually Tori's sister and grandmother.
Lots of Hanukkah and no Christmas it was an ok Hallmark holiday offering. The main romance seems to be between two individuals who are absolutely perfect for each other and it was nice to see a small tight knit community in a big city.
