This German Thriller Is One of Netflix’s Most Popular Movies of All Time After Just 3 Months
Image
Whenever you feel like watching a thriller, German cinema is usually not your go-to option. Like any movie industry, though, Germany releases titles across every genre throughout the year. The story centers around a woman who goes to extreme lengths in order to find her missing son. The movie is available to stream now.

Exterritorial plays a bit with the premise that several franchises like John Wick and Takenused over the last couple of decades. In it, Sara (Jeanne Goursaud) panics when her son disappears and, from the looks of it, the boy has been kidnapped. This prompts Sara to enter berserk mode and surprise everyone who thought she was a harmless housewife. As the trailer showcases,...

'Spartacus' Creator Teases Which Characters Will and Won't Return in 'House of Ashur'
Image
When it was announced that Spartacus was returning with a new sequel series, fans were surprised by some things about the announcement. The biggest one was that the new series would follow Ashur (Nick E. Tarabay), a character who met a pretty much irreversible end in Spartacus: Vengeance. However, showrunner Steven S. DeKnight explained that Spartacus: House of Ashur takes place in an alternate reality. During a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, the series creator revealed what other characters are going to return for the new series.

During the interview, DeKnight revealed that Starz wanted to do a Spartacus follow-up for years, but a number of events got in the way. He mentioned the premature death of Andy Whitfield, who was the title character in the debut season — he was replaced by Liam McIntyre (Bring Him To Me). The showrunner revealed that Whitfield's death "took the wind out of everybody's sails,...

With Zach Cregger at the helm, Barbarian was a critical and commercial success, featuring Bill Skarsgård in a role that was very different from his usual dark characters. Three years later, Barbarian has become a hit on Netflix, shortly after its June 1 release, per Tudum.

For the week between June 2 and June 8, Barbarian debuted in the charts in seventh place. The Ben Affleck Movie That Kevin Smith Called “Aptly Named” Climbs up Netflix Charts
Image
One of the most heartwarming things about Kevin Smith's otherwise bland Jay & Silent Bob Rebootwas seeing him back on good terms with Ben Affleck. Before becoming an A-list movie star in the 1990s, Affleck several of Smith's indies; he's an integral part of the filmmaker's View Askewniverse franchise. Over the years, Smith has often spoken about their friendship — he even got an early glimpse of his Bat-suit, and Affleck cast a bunch of people from Smith's Red State in Argo — and has also taken every opportunity to poke fun at Affleck's career. During one of his question-and-answer shows, Smith said that Affleck had a "one for them, one for me" policy, and that the movie Paycheck was firmly a "one for them" kind of project. Smith didn't seem to be much of a fan, describing his buddy's movie as "aptly named."

Over two decades after its release in 2003, Paycheckis...

The #1 Most-Watched Movie on Netflix is Now a Twisted Thriller Based On Shocking Real-Life Events
Image
A Spanish crime thriller based on actual events currently sits as the #1 film on Netflix globally and claims the #2 chart position in the U.S. today! More specifically, we are talking about A Widow’s Game. The film landed on the Netflix platform at the tail end of last month (May 30) and has been making waves ever since.

The flick is inspired by the real-life case of Maria Jesús Moreno Cantó, who has been dubbed the Black Widow of Patraix. Cantó was accused and convicted of killing her husband, Antonio Navarro Cerdán.

Carlos Sedes directed this fictionalized retelling from a script credited to Ramón Campos, Gema R. Neira, Jon de la Cuesta, Ricardo Jornet, David Orea, and Javier Chacártegui.

‘Adolescence’ Officially Becomes Netflix’s No. 2 Most Popular English-Language Series
Image
It’s official: Adolescence is now Netflix’s No. 2 most popular English-language series of all time.

As Deadline predicted last week, the British limited series has comfortably passed Stranger Things 4 to secure the title, amassing 141.2M views since its March 13 debut. There is still about 10 days left in its 91-day premiere window, meaning it’ll likely rack up a few more views before its official total is solidified on the Netflix most popular list.

It’s hard to overstate what a feat Adolescence has achieved here, considering it is a modest, four-episode limited series with no star power attached. The series, about a 13-year-old boy (played by breakout Owen Cooper) accused of stabbing a female classmate to death after being drawn into the online manosphere, managed to generate a powerful word-of-mouth campaign that has allowed it to rival the latest installment of one of Netflix’s most popular franchises.

As we mentioned last week,...

Everything You Need To Know About Netflix’s A Widow’s Game
Veuve noire (2025)
Netflix’s 2025 crime drama A Widow’s Game dives deep into one of Spain’s most shocking real-life murder cases—known as the Patraix case. The film is directed by Carlos Sedes, known for his work on crime thrillers like Now and Then and Fariña. The movie is more than just another crime thriller. It’s a sharp, procedural story about control, deceit, and how love can become a weapon. The film doesn’t glamorize the crime—it unpacks how people believe what they want to believe, and how that can destroy lives.

In this article, we explore what the film is about, the real events behind it, the cast and characters, where it was shot, and how Netflix reimagines this true story for the screen.

What is A Widow’s Game About?

A Widow’s Game Ending Explained & Plot Summary: Who Was Arturo’s Killer?
Image
What makes movies of the true crime subgenre work is that the allure of probing into the mind of criminals is too fascinating for audiences to miss. While there remains an undeniable ethical issue regarding these movies cashing in on tragedies, a nuanced representation can contribute to doing justice by the victims by showing the truth to the world. Netflix’s latest crime thriller, A Widow’s Game, a fictional recreation of the 2017 murder investigation of Engineer Antonio Navarro Cerdan, does just that by keeping the narrative focus on the perspectives and mental mapping of perps and investigators without curtailing the significance of the actual event. While the investigation itself is pretty basic, the question of what self-serving motives can drive people to go to such heinous lengths is surely shocking if not scary.

A Widow’s Game Cast And Characters Guide
Image
Netflix has aced the true crime subgenre for a long while now, and the recently released movie, A Widow’s Game, is another testament to the fact. Based on the investigation of the brutal murder of Engineer Antonio Mario Cerdan in Patraix, Valencia, orchestrated by his wife, Maria Jesus Moreno—dubbed by the media as the infamous Black Widow of Patraix—the movie mixes up sensational real-life accounts of the crime with fictional details to make for a riveting experience. Charting the intricacies of love, lust, lies, and betrayal, the narrative successfully represents the incident with as much authenticity as one can expect, and a solid cast is one of the major reasons behind that.

Maje, played by Ivana Baquero Macias

Spanish actor Ivana Baquero Macias gained recognition through her performance as lead Princess Moanna/Ofelia in Guillermo del Toro’s iconic Pan’s Labyrinth and later also starred in the high fantasy series The Shannara Chronicles.

A Widow’s Game Review: Three Perspectives on a Dark Deed
Image
A Widow’s Game draws its chilling narrative from the fertile ground of Spanish true crime, specifically the 2017 murder of Antonio Navarro Cerdán in Valencia. The film opens onto this grim reality: a man slain in the mundane anonymity of a parking garage, an act of stark violence that immediately propels the narrative into a somber register.

At the vortex of the ensuing investigation stands María Jesús Moreno Canto, or Maje, the victim’s young widow. Her public displays of sorrow are immediate and pronounced, yet an unsettling current runs beneath the surface of her bereavement, a subtle dissonance that hints at far more intricate and perhaps disquieting truths.

This cinematic retelling positions itself not merely as a reconstruction of events, but as an inquiry into the obscured contours of the personalities enmeshed in the tragedy, inviting the audience into a labyrinth of unfolding revelations.

A Prism of Perspectives

The film...

Real-Life Arturo Ferrer In A Widow’s Game: Was He Abusive And Controlling In Nature?
Image
Antonio Navarro married the love of his life on September 3rd, 2016. It was a magical day, when the two partners swore to be with each other through thick and thin. We saw how Antonio (name changed to Arturo Ferrer Puig in the film) had imagined his entire life with Maje in A Widow’s Game. They moved from their hometown Novelda, Alicante to Valencia, where they had bought a cozy apartment on 14 Calamocha Street, Patraix neighborhood. Antonio always believed that it was the start of a beautiful journey for them. But things changed down the line, or maybe they were always the same way; only Antonio was too trusting to see the reality. In this article, we will try to theorize why Antonio trusted Maje even after he got to know that she had been unfaithful to him, and if he was as controlling and authoritative as Maje made him out to be.

‘A Widow’s Game’ Netflix Review: Spanish True Crime Drama Is An Interesting Character Study
Image
Even though I am a fan of investigative thrillers, the true crime subgenre has always irked me. I mean, imagine you have survived some horrific murder attempt, or worse, and after years of therapy, you have managed to move on. But then you see some hack job of a director or screenwriter bringing back all those memories while spicing things up with their creative flair. Alternatively, how would you feel if someone from your family or friend circle, who was the victim of a heinous act of felony, is brought back to life by the power of cinema and their last moments are now being displayed to the whole world in minute, gory detail? In addition to that, the movies and shows that populate this subgenre always seem to be lazily put together, because the creators think that the dramatization of a real event doesn’t need to have a perspective,...

Real-Life Salva In A Widow’s Game: Where Is Salvador Rodrigo Now?
Image
Salvador Rodrigo Lapiedra, also known as Salva, had been a family man when he first met the woman who was going to destroy his entire life. The 46-year-old man and his wife worked as nursing assistants at Hospital Casa de Salud and had a daughter who was in her twenties when Salva started an extramarital affair with his 26-year-old co-worker, Maria “Maje” Jesus Moreno. Maje was 20 years younger than Salva, almost the age of his daughter, yet the lover in him believed that he deserved a second chance in life so he could live it to the fullest. Behind his wife’s back, the two started exchanging romantic letters promising to spend the rest of their lives together. It was obvious that Salva was bewitched by the young girl’s beauty, and her rampant flirtation just made the matter worse. It made Salva believe that Maje “really” loved him, and...

‘A Widow’s Game’ Ending Explained: Did Maje Kill Arturo?
Image
The ending of A Widow’s Game was about Eva and the homicide unit of the National Police nabbing Maje and Salva for the murder of Arturo. On 3rd September 2016, Arturo married Maje, despite knowing that she had cheated on him with Andres. He assumed that Maje wouldn’t cheat on him anymore, but the truth of the matter was that she was involved in extramarital relationships with Andres, Daniel, and lord knows how many more men. When Arturo eventually found out about her sexual escapades, he said that he’d divorce her and throw her out of the apartment. Maje had a bit of a panic attack and had a discussion with Andres about how much she wanted to kill Arturo. During that interaction, she devised a plan to seduce Salva, her colleague at the hospital she worked at who was obsessed with her, and make him do her bidding.

Real-Life Maria Jesus In A Widow’s Game: Where Is Maje Now?
Image
In real life, Maria Jesus Moreno Cento, or Maje, infamously known as the Black Widow of Patraix, maintained her innocence till the very end and testified in court that she never asked her lover and co-worker, Salvador Rodrigo Lapiedra, to kill her husband, Antonio Navarro Cerdan, introduced as Arturo in A Widow’s Game. However, during the investigation, the homicide group had gathered evidence from two different sources that established Maje had been lying all along and was trying to set up her lovers to kill her husband.

Before Salva took the bait and carried out her wishes, Maje had pulled a similar stunt with a young guy named Tomas, introduced as Andres in Netflix’s A Widow’s Game. Both in the film and in real life, Maje had shared a casual relationship with Tomas since May 2016, that is, before her wedding, and she continued seeing him after the couple moved to Valencia.

Image
Netflix’s A Widow’s Game is based on the real-life murder case of Antonio Navarro Cerdan, a 36-year-old engineer who was found brutally stabbed to death. On 16th August 2017, the police found Antonio’s body in a parking garage located on Calle Calamocha Street, Patraix, a neighborhood in Valencia, Spain, where Antonio lived with his wife, Maria Jesus Moreno. He had multiple stab wounds on his chest with none of his personal belongings missing, which implied that the perpetrator had an intense relationship with the victim and killing him was their prime objective. But who could have had such beef with Antonio? You see, Antonio was a simple man who had been living a pretty decent life. A year ago, on 3rd September 2016, he’d gotten married to 26-year-old Maria, aka Maje, in their hometown, Novelda, Alicante, and the couple shifted to Valencia together for work. In the city, Maje...
