I streamed Diani & Devine Meet the Apocalypse after enjoying Gabriel Diani and Etta Devine's first movie, the horror-comedy The Selling which I checked out from the local library. Diani & Devine Meet the Apocalypse delighted audiences at small indie movie festivals and it's easy to see why. It's one of those comical oddity gems, the type that you sometimes find distributed by Fox Searchlight pictures. Too bad this movie hasn't had the same kind of exposure. It begins by roasting the Hollywood star-making machine (maybe why it hasn't been distributed more widely) before it parodies those us-against-them apocalyptic survival flicks. It's all done with a clever script, fine acting and sharp editing. You'll want to watch it more than once to make sure you catch all the jokes.
My husband and I really enjoyed this one! So quirky and funny. Really great writing. Highly recommend!
This film is fun. It has a low budget feel that makes you like it. The actors are fun as they play themselves. And the writing is fun. It has an offbeat feel and on some level it is enjoyable. But on the other hand, it is rather forgettable. Nothing in it particularly shines. To where it is fun and likeable just not memorable in any way. Overall its a fun indie kind of film, but not memorable.
Why is it, whenever hollywood envisions the apocalypse, it's always people walking around in the desert? As soon as civilization collapses, all Californians head for that long, lonely highway. It's always in Nevada or Arizona. That's where they decide they should be. I mean, what about the Pacific Northwest? Or Montana? Or Florida? Or Appalachia? Someplace with trees? And fish and game? And fresh water?
This movie is probably a good fit for the entertainment crowd, people who love stage shows, singing and dancing numbers, vaudeville, that sort of thing. But for the rest of us it's just an occasionally funny movie that's apparently meant to be an admission that California liberals are pretty weak, for the most part.
Five out of ten, it made me laugh quite a few times.

A different take on surviving the apocalypse. A wry comedy that follows a pair of actors as they attempt to survive after society has broken down. A lot of the humor is subtle and comes from the characters low key reactions to stressful situations. The absurdity of politely chatting with acquaintances they ran into while out looking for supplies in an abandoned grocery store. Its an amusing indie movie,

- AnecdotesDiani and Devine funded the movie with a successful $100,000 Kickstarter campaign in 2013, where they described the project as "a modern take on the classic Abbott & Costello/Martin & Lewis/Hope & Crosby comedy team genre set against the background of the collapse of civilization." The campaign also said: "It's like one of those old Bob Hope/Bing Crosby ROAD TO... movies meets Cormac McCarthy's THE ROAD. It's THE ROAD TO THE ROAD!"
- Crédits fousSPOILER: After the end credits there is a brief scene slowly panning over desert bushes. Ed pops up from hiding with a bush on the top of his head as camouflage, quickly looks left and right, then drops back down into hiding again. As Gabe had predicted, Ed is still alive.
