In Magadan, in May 1972, Professor Krabovskiy, demonstrating the operation of his invention in a forested area, stumbles upon a corpse. Colonel Kostenko is sent to the Magadan region to conduct investigative measures. He is partnered with young lieutenant Konstantin Tadava. Judging by the photograph, the body has not had time to decompose, so it can be assumed that no more than two weeks have passed since the murder.

Zhukov manages to establish the identity of the murdered man - Mikhail Goncharov. Together with Kostenko, they decide to talk to Deryabin, who had a scuffle with Zagibalov. He remembers the murdered man from a photograph, because he talked to him at the airport while waiting out the flight delay. He also lets slip that he sold him a gold nugget and never saw him again.

In Magadan, Kostenko and Zhukov search Milinko's apartment. Judging by the state of the mailbox, they understand that he has not been there for at least three weeks. Kostenko finds a page from a German phrasebook under the table leg and gives the order to take fingerprints and run them through the database. At the same time, Tadava goes to Severskiy, thanks him for his help in identifying him and shares his suspicions that the saboteur is still living in the country under Russian documents. He assumes that the one who now lives under the name Milinko is related to the special services of Nazi Germany and, theoretically, has traces in the archives.

Kostenko arrives in Sukhumi. He is informed about a disfigured female corpse that has been found. The expert describes the approximate age of the victim, specifies that she was pregnant, and that her head and hands were cut off. There are also hematomas and fractures on the body. It is impossible to determine the identity yet, but Kostenko assumes that the corpse belongs to Petrova. The main clue is a woman's shoe, which he plans to use to identify the murdered woman.

Zhukov cuts off the trim in the trunk of the taxi car that Milinko drove. He finds a trace of blood - reports to Kostenko, who continues to ponder the key link in the evidence base: Krotov's stuttering, which somehow evaporated. Kostenko has an idea - he calls the widow of his friend, who also suffered from stuttering. After which, he visits the professor, which helped him cope with this illness. He makes it clear that it is impossible to answer this question unequivocally.

Kira comes to Kostenko, tells him about her transfer to the capital and asks for help with material for her new work. He gives her Krotov's case to read, but does not allow her to make copies of it. Tadava volunteers to personally tell her about the criminal. He begins his story by saying that Krotov's mental problems stem from his childhood. This was facilitated by his father's tough character, as well as the school environment.

Krotov comes to Magadan to Petrova from a 'hunt' for nuggets. He notices perfume in her apartment, the girl explains that it is a gift from Deryabin. Then, his colleague at the taxi company Tsypkin shows him at the airport when the flight is delayed. It is while observing his meeting with Goncharov that Krotov learns about the nugget. He arranges it so that he can take him by taxi, but he fails to kill him, because a woman with a child gets in with them.

It becomes known that Krotov was identified in the port of Sukhumi. His colleague at work wrote a statement about the theft of his car, just on the day when Petrova's body was found. Kostenko talks about a place where he could hide. He hopes that he will not abandon his plan to flee abroad and will show himself sooner or later. At the same time, Kira, near Krotov's house, finds burnt things.
