A slow rise.

Decent story of a veteran dealing with PTSD, bad luck and bad people. This story has been told many times, rarely breaking new ground in the crime genre, only this felt more real than most. The low budget helps capture Dublin's grim urban landscapes with damp streets, dirty canals, dimly lit alleys that present a mood and create the right amount of tension. If you are entertained by depictions of urban despair and the gritty side of life and are not expecting a polished, high-budget thriller and you don't need a tidy happy ending you'll probably like it. If you're into happy sappy endings this definitely isn't it.

Bad acting and riddled with cliches

As per the title, the acting was vastly amateurish (particularly the young main character) to go along with an old, done to death theme.

Obviously extremely cheaply made but it absolutely.

With this type of movie there should be a connection to the characters from the viewer but poor acting and direction made that impossible.

A lot of 10 ratings in the reviews, one can only assume they have come from people connected to the movie, or connected to the people who are connected to the movie. There is absolutely no way whatsoever that this is anywhere near the high marks.

Do yourself a favour and give this one a miss.

Pointless waste of time

Another disappointing paddy film stupid tired story line plagued with stereotypical cliches. If you have any free time do not waste this thinking it's anything like Kin . It's not it's utter dug meat . I have had better trips to the dentist than this . In fact I once for probed by an alien in a very vivid dream ( or was it 🤔) that felt better than I did after watching this codswallop . Do yourself a favour of your thinking of watching this don't get yourself 8 beer a baseball bat and smash it off your shins it will give you momentum pleasure than realising you watched this monstrous production till the end . Your sincerely Graeme no life Smillie.

Echoes of Greatness

Amongst the Wolves is a gut-punch of an Irish thriller that doesn't hold back. Luke McQuillan is straight-up incredible as Danny, a homeless ex-soldier battling PTSD and his demons on Dublin's rough streets. His quiet intensity carries the whole film-every glance and move feels so real. The story hooks you when Danny connects with Will, a teenager (Daniel Fee) tangled up with a brutal drug gang led by Power, played by Aidan Gillen, who's as chilling as you'd expect.

The film's raw and grounded, with Dublin's gritty corners practically a character on their own. The cinematography's stark, and the sparse soundtrack lets the emotions breathe. Yeah, it hits a few familiar crime drama notes, and the ending wraps up a bit too quick, but man, it's intense and gripping. McQuillan's performance is the heart of it-you feel his pain and fight. If you're into hard-hitting, character-driven stories that dive into the dark side without flinching, this one's a must. Really stuck with me. 8/10.

Amongst the Wolves

"Amongst the Wolves" is an Irish revenge thriller crossed with a heart felt character study. Danny, a homeless ex-soldier, grapples with past trauma and PTSD on the mean streets of Dublin. Danny takes Will, a troubled young man under his wing. Will is harassed by a drug gang. Danny will face off against the gang, where his deadly soldier skills will come into play.

Director Mark O'Connor, already delivered one classic Irish gangster film in "Cardboard Gangsters". He's done it again with this film.

"Amongst the Wolves" is an excellent Irish revenge thriller crossed with a heart felt character study. I strongly recommend it.

10/10 must watch!

Excellent movie. A gripping Irish crime thriller which had me on the edge of my seat from the beginning to the end! Great performance from Aidan Gillen as always. It was also refreshing to see some newer Irish talent on screen - overall a very well cast movie. The story line was powerful with some interesting twists. While the movie is packed with intense, action packed moments, it also features raw, emotionally charged performances that give the story real heart and depth. My favourite Irish movie in a long time! Particularly loved that it was filmed around Dublin. Would highly recommend giving it a watch.

Amongst the Wolves

I've just seen this film in the cinema and it's one of the best indie films I've seen in 2025. It caught be off guard as I was not expecting it to be so powerful. The cinematography was breathtaking and really helped in showing the character's depths through certain frames and omissions. The directing by Mark O'Connor and acting were stellar, making it easy to be invested in Danny's story and his relationship with Will especially. It touches on important themes and is essentially a story about profound loss and represents a side of Dublin that often does not get represented. It's interesting how many different genres this film blends - thriller, family drama, action - and manages to switch between them to take an aspect from each one to make them all work together. Everyone should watch this film if they get a chance!

Very Strong Movie

Really enjoyed the movie. Haven't seen such a good one in a while (in terms of the story and the way it's conveyed). Very easy to follow and understand what's going on in the plot. Brilliant actors play - I could feel it like watching it in real life. I also liked that the movie shows the problems existing in our society but at the same time it gives a hope for a better future as it portrays state workers as rather positive characters than negative (as you often see in other movies).

I also liked the way they portrayed the main male character - strong man but at the same time - a real human, who has feelings and emotions and deals with them to the best way he can.

compassionate

This Irish film genuinely took me by surprise - a compelling and emotionally rich story that had me hooked from the opening scenes. The performances were incredibly authentic, especially from the lead, who brought real depth to the character. The film's mood is haunting in the best way, lingering in your mind long after the credits roll. Visually, it's stunning - the direction and cinematography really highlight both the rugged beauty and underlying tension of the environment. What stood out most was its honest portrayal of working-class life, something rarely explored with such sensitivity and realism in modern cinema. The cast is outstanding, and it was a real treat to see John Boy from Love/Hate in a role like this. Absolutely worth watching - a standout Irish drama that deserves more attention.

A raw and sad story .

I thought this film capture the exhaustiveness of being homeless , the characters were so perfectly flawed . Danny played by Luke Mc Quillan was brilliant such a raw anger played so softly at times . Dublin can be an unforgiving place for rough sleepers we all imagine we are good at our core and that this type of violence lives beyond our reach but when pushed and treated like trash it's only a matter of time before we become primitive , feral in the violence to protect the one s we love the film does exactly this , you can see Danny once had it all but through harrowing circumstance it's slips away the film should remind us all that Danny lies within us all .

The female characters in the film hold it together nicely against the back drop of a masculine violence.

Solid watch.

Humanity rises above misery

I was bracing myself a bit, before going to see this, as I knew it was about an ex-soldier and his PTSD. So, I thought it'd be a difficult watch.

But, I was surprised by it. It wasn't just about the brutality & misery that people inflict on each other. Those things were there, but they served as a back drop to the humanity & compassion of Luke McQuillan's character, Danny.

Even though Danny has a lot of pain, sheer bad luck, and looks like no way to get out of it, he rises above it, to help the teenage Will. (played by Daniel Fee) It's that compassionate humanity of Danny that just can't stay silent and do nothing.

You spend the whole movie hoping against hope that they'll beat the odds. Rooting for Danny especially, as he's put so much on the line.

The cinema was silent throughout the movie - everyone else was holding their breath too.

Yes, it wasn't a perfect movie - after all, it's Indie, low budget etc, but, Luke McQuillan was sooooo powerful & magnetic on the screen, you just couldn't look away. The perfect hero - the strong guy who has a heart, & protects those who are weaker. But not a trope. His character revealed itself slowly. He was still, & in control of his emotions, but you could almost read them out loud from his face. Brilliant directing from Mark O'Connor.

And I loved that I was guessing, & wondering, & never had those disappointing 'I know exactly what's going to happen next' moments.

I think Daniel Fee has a bit of a way to go, but as a first time actor, he gave a good portrayal of the unsure & often stupid teenage Will. It's just that Luke McQuillan owned the screen, & as the viewer, that's where you wanted to keep returning. More of Luke McQuillan please!!!!!

Aidan Gillen is always a riveting watch. He plays the gangland boss, Power. There's one scene (not a spoiler) where he's simply eating chips / French fries, and he's absolutely terrifying and menacing.

Power is a 'strong man' character too, as Danny is, but not the kind of man anyone wants in their life.

Mark O'Connor's skill as a director makes these characters so believable. And the locations he films in are real Dublin - I know because I live here. Beautiful parts, good parts, but tough & dirty areas too. Just like those characters.

Go and see it, & watch something real. Unless you only like slick, big budget, movies showing nice & tidy stories!

Original Take On Gangland

In a cinematic landscape often saturated with familiar gangland tropes, "Amongst the Wolves" emerges as a genuinely unique and compelling take on the gangland genre. Far from being just another tale of urban strife, this film deftly navigates the gritty underworld while injecting it with a profound sense of social awareness and an undeniable current of emotional depth.

What sets "Amongst the Wolves" apart immediately is its decision to pivot away from the typical power struggles and territorial disputes. Instead, the film zeroes in on pressing social issues, most notably the devastating impact of homelessness. This focus grounds the narrative in a raw, often heartbreaking reality, allowing viewers to connect with characters who are not merely cogs in a criminal machine, but individuals grappling with immense personal hardship.

While the backdrop may be familiar, the film's true heart beats as a gripping revenge thriller. The narrative masterfully builds tension, drawing you into a meticulously crafted plot driven by personal vendetta rather than the usual gangland politics. This shift in focus elevates "Amongst the Wolves" beyond its peers, transforming it into a taut, edge-of-your-seat experience that resonates long after the credits roll.

"Amongst the Wolves" isn't just about violence and retribution; it's a film with genuine heart. It explores themes of resilience, the bonds forged in adversity, and the human cost of societal neglect. This emotional resonance, combined with its fresh perspective on a well-trodden genre, makes "Amongst the Wolves" a must-see for anyone seeking a film that challenges expectations and leaves a lasting impact.

"A gritty, unflinching film

Raw and intense with its violence. Fantastic to see an Irish movie carry this kind of edge, echoing the ferocity of the revenge thriller Dead Mans Shoes by Shane Meadows. Both Aiden and Luke were fantastic. Surprised they had such a low budget to make this movie and shot it 15 days. I would love to see more of these type of movies being made in Ireland Overall, very impressed."
