‘Delirium’ Netflix Review: A Confusing Mishmash Of Gangster Drama & Mental Illness
Image
Nonlinear storytelling wasn’t invented by Christopher Nolan; it’s a tool that’s as old as the medium of literature and motion pictures itself. Among the earliest examples are apparently Homer’s Iliad, Vyasa’s Mahabharata, and several stories in The Arabian Nights. When it comes to cinema, Buster Keaton’s Sherlock Jr., Alfred Hitchcock’s Rebecca, and Orson Welles’ Citizen Kane can be credited for both perfecting this gimmick and making it palatable to the general public. As for television, shows like True Detective (the first season), Pachinko, Sharp Objects, Dark, and The Haunting of Hill House are the pinnacle of nonlinear narratives, at least for me, primarily because the timeline jumps gave the themes a lot of depth and fleshed out the characters in a way that wouldn’t have been possible if it was given to us straight. However, much like anything that’s popular, talentless...

‘Matrubhoomi’ and the Curse of Men Without Women
Image
90,00,000. Or, 9 million. That’s the female births that went “missing” between 2000 and 2019 owing to female-selective abortions*. To set into context, the entire Delhi had a female citizenry of less than 8 million in 2011. From the ashes of the sin that is female foeticide, we might have created a New Delhi that is new in name and ideology – a sincere attempt at Matrubhoomi.

Manish Jha’s “Matrubhoomi: A Nation Without Women” (2003) welcomes the viewers into a village that took things to an extreme. When a girl is born, she is killed right at that instant. No consent, no deliberation, simply death. The celebration bells swiftly change into cries of help and distress. Naïve babies don’t know what’s going to happen with them, and ignorant fathers don’t comprehend what they are bringing onto themselves. Only the mothers, however scarce and helpless, are able to grasp the reality of these decisions.

Revisiting The Impact Of Kaun Banega Crorepati As It Completes 25 Years On July 3
Image
Subhash K Jha revisits the history of the hit game show Kaun Banega Crorepati to celebrate 25 years!

Within one week of this millennium, the face of Indian television changed beyond recognition. Nobody—not even the enterprising far-sighted Star Plus boss Sameer Nair who surreptitiously initiated moves to import Who Wants To Be A Millionaire into this country—could have guessed what was in store for and on Indian television in and from July 2,000 onwards.

The other channels were left looking like honorary denizens of the idiot box ( with the stress on idiot). From being a distant third Star Plus simply swept past the competition to emerge way ahead of Zee and Sony Entertainment who didn’t know what hit them until it was too late.

Who would have thought that Kaun Banega Crorepati would change us into a nation of knowledge-thirsty gamblers? Children in their free time no longer play—or watch—Antakshari.

The Mahabharat Over Dadasaheb Phalke
Image
Suddenly two of India’s most celebrated filmmakers are keen on making a bio-pic on the founding father of Indian cinema, Dadasaheb Phalke.

Raj Kumar Hirani is all set to make the Dadasaheb biopic with Aamir Khan, while down South, the redoubtable S S Rajamouli is prepping to tell the Phalke saga with Ntr Jr. in the eponymous role.

The almost simultaneous timing of the two biopics on a man who was born 155 years ago seems more than a coincidence.

Sources close to the development have some somewhat startling details on the double Dadasaheb aspirations.

According to a source close to the development, Rajamouli was planning his biopic for more than two years. “Then he suddenly hears that Aamir Khan and Raju Hirani are doing it. This came as a shock to Rajamouli, and not a pleasant one. This is not the first time Rajamouli’s ambition was in the...

Mukesh Khanna Unveils Book ‘Satyaki: Dwapar Ka Ajey Yodha’
Mukesh Khanna
Mumbai, India —In a grand literary event held recently, veteran actor Mukesh Khanna, renowned for portraying Bhishma Pitamah in the iconic TV series Mahabharat, officially unveiled the much-anticipated book “Satyaki: Dwapar Ka Ajey Yodha” written by acclaimed filmmaker and author Dushyant Pratap Singh.

This 32-chapter epic explores the untold saga of Satyaki, a mighty warrior from the Mahabharata, whose contributions to the war and ancient Indian history have largely remained overshadowed by more frequently cited names. The book promises to reintroduce Satyaki to modern readers through a powerful blend of research, imagination, and engaging storytelling.

A Warrior Rediscovered

While the Mahabharata is known for its rich pantheon of warriors and heroes, author Dushyant Pratap Singh believes that figures like Satyaki never received the recognition they truly deserve.

“Satyaki was not just a brave warrior — he was a symbol of loyalty, strategy, and dharma. This book is my effort to bring...

When Shah Rukh Spoke On 2004’s Main Hoon Na and the Indo-Pak Relations Storyline
Image
Subhash K Jha turns the focus once again on the Farah Khan directed Main Hoon Na, which released in 2004 and is now considered a cult classic. As a bonus, there is a throwback interview with the star Shah Rukh Khan that is not to be missed!

Hefty hints and wacky whispers harking back to the ‘golden’ era of masala cinema, carpet this perky piece of pop-art, buoyed and held aloft by the defiance of every law of gravity.

And how can you stay grave when Shah Rukh Khan as Ram Prasad Sharma (giggle!), in his most politically correct role ever( ahem!), goes back to college to protect his army- boss Kabir Bedi’s rebellious daughter Amrita Rao from harm? How can you stay serious as (chuckle!) Ram, disguised as an over-age student in scenic St Paul’s in Darjeeling(Munnabhai, move over), is heckled by the long-haired dude-with-an-altitudinal-attitude Laxman (Zayed Khan...

Image
Did Paiyaa almost have a different leading actress? (Photo Credit – Instagram/Prime Video)

Director N. Lingusamy recently spilled the beans on the behind-the-scenes intrigue that resulted in Tamannaah taking over and altering the history of the film.

The Casting Change: Nayanthara’s Exit

Little does everyone know that Nayanthara was Lingusamy’s top pick to be Charulatha in Paiyaa. However, the production team was pressed by the then-prevailing economic recession to cut some costs.

With a string of box office failures taking a toll on Nayanthara’s value in the market, the team asked her to lower her price.

But hold on to that thought! When she turned down the offer and negotiations collapsed, the movie was left without a leading lady, prompting Lingusamy to take a game-changing call.

Then he was in Shool, which focused on crime and politics in Bihar. He played Veerendra Pratap in Raajneeti, which was an amalgamation of Mahabharat and The Godfather. He was integral to the evolution of the landscape of Hindi cinema that was triggered by Anurag Kashyap’s Gangs of Wasseypur duology. He is currently the face of the Silence franchise. Through The Family Man and Killer Soup, he has shown he is incredibly comfortable with flexing his acting chops through the episodic format on the small screen. ‘Mahabharata’ 8K Restoration Brings Peter Brook’s Epic Back to Venice
Image
Nearly 35 years after its original debut at the Venice Film Festival, Peter Brook’s epic film adaptation of “The Mahabharata” is returning to the Lido in a meticulously restored 8K version. The restoration, spearheaded by the late director’s son Simon, marks a new chapter for the groundbreaking 1989 production that brought the ancient Indian epic to global audiences.

“The Mahabharata” holds a unique place in Peter Brook’s storied career. Based on his nine-hour stage production, the film version clocked in at a still-substantial three hours. It featured an international cast performing in English and was shot in a Paris studio. The ambitious project aimed to distill the essence of the vast Hindu epic, exploring themes of war, ethics and power across generations.

Brook wanted to make a six-hour film initially, but this was deemed unfinanceable, so the decision was taken to shoot concurrently a three-hour film version and a six-hour TV version.

Kalki 2898 Ad Takes A Major Inspiration From Mahabharat. (Photo Credit – Instagram/YouTube)

Kalki 2898 Ad is running in the theaters with mixed responses but overwhelming numbers. Starring Prabhas, Deepika Padukone, Kamal Haasan, Amitabh Bachchan, and others, the film has earned almost 280 crore worldwide and 149 crore in India.

Kalki takes its inspiration from Mahabharat and blends it with Vishnu Puran, where Ashwatthama, the lone warrior from the Battle of Kurukshetra, has been cursed by Lord Krishna as he kills Arjun’s son on the battlefield. Now, Ashwatthama awaits the tenth avatar of Lord Vishnu.

Kalki x Mahabharat

Mahabharat is an epic that always finds a place in the glorious stories of Indian Cinema. In fact, films like Rajneeti and Hum Paanch have used the caricature of Mahabharat to bring a modern-day tale. However, there have been films that have attempted to put Mahabharat on screen.

‘Kalki 2898 Ad’ Review: A Dense and Exhaustingly Action-Packed Dystopian Tollywood Epic
Image
No one does action films like South Indian directors.

This is a statement that mercifully requires little justification after the worldwide success of “Rrr,” a fever that will no doubt fuel the release of Nag Ashwin’s “Kalki 2898 Ad.” Seamlessly blending the best inspirations from sci-fi, fantasy, and Hindu epics, the film is a staggering cinematic experience — even if that experience drags toward the end.

We begin in the age of the “Mahabharat,” where Ashwatthama (a terrifyingly de-aged Amitabh Bachchan) is told by Krishna that he must deliver Vishnu’s final avatar Kalki to safety, whenever that day may come. Six thousand years later, it’s time, when the city of Kashi is the last vestige of civilization on the planet. Everyone is hungry, poor, and fighting for resources — everyone except those living in The Complex, a massive inverted pyramid hovering over the city, and ruled by a “god” referred...

“Kalki 2898 Ad Is A Whopping Spectacle Filled With Sound & Fury Signifying Something” – A Subhash K Jha Review
Image
Kalki 2898 Ad

Directed by: Nag Ashwin

Starring: Prabhas, Kamal Haasan, Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone & Disha Patani

It’s been a long wait for this repeatedly postponed big-screen epic buoyed by an eye-catching grandeur and pickled by a passionate penchant for hand-to-hand combats.

The wait, as they say, has been worth its weight in bold.

With Kalki 2898 Ad, Indian cinema reaches a new threshold of optical opulence. To say that every frame of this film exudes an apogean density would be an understatement. To also say that this is Amitabh Bachchan’s best-written role in years—after being grossly misused in a series of recent films—would be stating the obvious.

There is a fine line dividing visual resplendence from an emotional intensity. Director Nag Ashwin who has also written the sprawling screenplay, walks that line achieving a rare synthesis of perilous stunts and a deeply moving story of...

Shah Rukh Khan Was Not The First Choice For Darr? This Border Actor Once Said He Was Offered Play Rahul
Image
Shah Rukh Khan’s Darr ( Photo Credit – IMDb )

The first time Shah Rukh Khan worked with Yash Chopra in a Yrf movie was in 1993 for Darr. The superstar, who’s called the King of Romance and has given such romantic hits for the production house, started his journey with them in a negative role. In Chopra’s film, Srk played Rahul, an obsessed, one-sided lover who would go to any extent to win a girl. The movie also stars Sunny Deol and Juhi Chawla.

When one thinks of Darr, one will never forget the chilling scene where Rahul craves Kiran’s name on his chest with a knife. The bleeding chest and the madness and rage in his eyes are what make the scene stand out. We cannot imagine anyone else except Shah Rukh Khan playing the obsessive lover. But did you know another actor was offered the role? And...

Hindi cinema's story-driven, socially conscious filmmaker who even got 'police summons'

A unique combination of circumstances led to him landing in Bombay soon after the Partition and being tasked with directing a film, though his cinematic experience was limited to being a film journalist. He even managed to rope in a top actor – and on the very first day, questioned his rendition of a crucial scene.

Recalling the episode decades later, veteran Hindi film director and producer B.R. Chopra revealed that Ashok Kumar, who had somehow agreed to act in the film despite his misgivings at its totally green director, was taken aback.

“He then suggested that he would do the shot again in the way I suggested, and prints of both this and the way he had done, should be made, and he would check them the next day to see which was better,” he told Bollywood personality and chronicler Shashi Ranjan in an interview.

‘Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire’ Review: An Inside-Out Indian Epic of Violent Delights
Image
Leaning full-tilt into its duology structure, Tollywood action drama “Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire” has a winding, often confounding narrative aimed at building up a sequel, but its maximalist action tableaus always yield dividends. After his previous two-parter “K.G.F.” smashed Indian box-office records for Kannada-language films, director Prashanth Neel employs the talents of ultra-charismatic superstar Prabhas (the star of S.S. Rajamouli’s “Baahubali” series) as the silent, stewing protagonist Deva, in a grimy guns-and-gangsters melodrama.

At first, the story plays its cards close to its chest before transforming wildly and suddenly into a mythological epic about secret societies and millennia-old blood feuds. At 174 minutes long, with nested flashbacks overflowing with exposition, the movie has lengthy stretches that can feel like a chore. However, each extraneous segment eventually converges in some of the most exhilarating and cathartic on-screen violence Indian cinema has to offer.

Opening with a series of flashbacks,...
