Frontline Acquires ‘Antidote’ Documentary Thriller On Investigative Journalist Caught In Kremlin Crosshairs
Image
Exclusive: A new documentary about Christo Grozev, an investigative journalist put on a Kremlin “kill list” for exposing Russian assassination plots, will make its broadcast debut on Frontline.

The long-running PBS investigative documentary series produced by GBH in Boston has struck a deal to air the film directed by James Jones the night of May 6 on PBS stations, as well as Frontline’s YouTube channel and the PBS Documentaries Prime Video Channel. The documentary will become available that same evening (at 7 p.m. Eastern/6 p.m. Central) at pbs.org/frontline and through the PBS App. Prior to the Frontline, Antidote will have a limited theatrical release in Los Angeles.

Grozev rose to international prominence by uncovering Kremlin schemes to poison Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny and Russian British activist and journalist Vladimir Kara-Murza. While that work earned him the sobriquet “rock star investigative journalist,” it didn’t endear Grozev...

He Exposed Kremlin Assassins, Now Putin Wants Him Dead: ‘Antidote’ Explores “Rock Star Journalist” Christo Grozev
Image
How do you live when Vladimir Putin wants you dead?

That’s the dilemma facing Christo Grozev, a man often described as a “rock star investigative journalist.” The story of how he became persona non grata — песона нон грата, if you prefer – with the Kremlin is told in the documentary Antidote, directed by James Jones, which just made its world premiere at Cph:Dox in Copenhagen.

“Someone asked me the other day, how many people are on Putin’s kill list? And I was like, ‘I have no idea,’” Jones says as he and Grozev join Deadline at a café at the Cph:dox hub. “But it is interesting that if you end up on their criminal wanted list… that’s a pretty good sign you’ve crossed some kind of line.”

Putin Assassination Target Christo Grozev on Why Life Has Become Even More Dangerous: ‘The Bad Guys Now Are Seen as Being Ok in the U.S.’
Image
Investigative journalist Christo Grozev, a key contributor to Oscar-winning documentary “Navalny” and central protagonist of “Antidote,” is one of Vladimir Putin’s most wanted men for having exposed his assassination operations against opponents such as the late Alexei Navalny. At Copenhagen’s Cph:dox documentary festival on Tuesday, he spoke about the dangers he is facing.

Grozev was part of a panel at the festival that looked at the guts and sacrifice that have to be made to expose truth through filmmaking and news reporting. He was joined on stage by the director of “Antidote,” Emmy-winning British filmmaker James Jones (“Chernobyl: The Lost Tapes”).

With “Antidote,” which won best editing at the last Tribeca Film Festival and screens at Cph:dox in an updated version, Jones told the audience that his initial idea was to investigate Putin’s poison program with the open source investigation platform Bellingcat with which Grozev was collaborating.

‘Griffin In Summer’, ‘Bikechess’, ‘Hacking Hate’ Take Top Awards At Tribeca Festival
Image
Nicholas Colia’s Griffin in Summer swept the narrative features award categories at the 2024 Tribeca Festival, nabbing honors for best U.S. film and screenplay, as well as a special jury mention for new narrative director.

Colia’s feature debut stars Everett Blunck as an aspiring 14-year-old playwright who falls hard for his mother’s handyman and struggling performance artist, played by Owen Teague. The jury mentioned in its notes Thursday that the film “straddled the very thin line between heartwarming, tragic, hilarious and awkward” and that it “fills a void in the marketplace for films that touch on sophisticated themes while remaining family friendly. Never pandering, always fresh, full of relatable universal experiences while being incredibly specific and nuanced.”

Jasmine Bearkiller Shangreaux won for Best Performance in a U.S. Narrative Feature for Jazzy, by Morrisa Maltz, a follow-up to her 2023 The Unknown Country starring Lily Gladstone. The Killers...
