School of wannabe meanies

I skimmed the anime before years back so I do know the overall vibe of it but I know nothing about the plot so I can't tell if this is a good adaptation... however it does say "based on" so doubt it's going to be that similar. There's also a Japanese version that follows anyway?... now for this show. It's okay?

It's toned down but it retains some of the anime vibes to it especially with how some are dressed and the acting can get campy which might turn some people off. All I can say is that Miku Martineau as Yumeko is PERFECT. She delivered the crazy camp albeit toned down so well I never once felt weirded out too bad the rest of the cast didn't level up to her. They're just there. There's a lack of intensity with the way the characters play off each other.

The plot is alright. The thrill isn't so thrilling for me since the games end so quick and they took out the overly crazy way the characters act in the anime so it doesn't hit the same. They feel like normal gambling students with bad fashion sense. The school doesn't feel "elite" more like a school for delinquents.

What I totally love about this is the way it's edited. It's flowy yet choppy and just really giving anime edit. The music isn't so bad either. Overall it's fine. Nothing I'd rave about nor something I hate. I'll watch a season 2 if they ever get renewed but I'm not on my knees for it.

Not as bad as the reviews say it is.

Truly do not understand the terrible reviews. If you go into this expecting some sort of cinematic masterpiece then yeah, you're going to be disappointed and hate yourself. But that's on you.

I found the show oddly compelling and totally binged it, as evidenced by my writing a review on the whole thing, what, a day or two after it was released? Don't judge me, I have no life. 😂

The acting is touch and go - Yumeko is great, Ryan is good, Michael is freaking terrible. The plot is thin, because it spends too much time laser-focused on a singular aspect before blowing it wide open on the penultimate episode - this was a miscalculation that may cost the series a second season, though I find myself hoping not.

All in all, I'd watch a second season and -do- recommend the series...but you HAVE to go into it with zero expectations and just enjoy it for it what it is. Let yourself have some fun - it ain't gonna kill ya. ;)

Was gonna give it a 7, but subtracted a star for the Japanese RickRoll at the end of the finale.

Kakeguri gets the Netflix curse

Kakegurui didn't need this. The anime was stylish, chaotic brilliance, and the original live action adaptation already captured that well enough. This remake is a total insult. It reeks of lazy Americanization, stripping out everything unique and replacing it with bland, safe garbage. The actors look like they were pulled from a casting call for toothpaste commercials hawkweed, unattractive, and completely lacking the unhinged magnetism the roles demand. The cinematography is flat, the energy is gone, and every creative choice feels sanitized by clueless execs chasing trends. It's not just bad. It's embarrassing. Don't watch this.

Made me laugh

I'm by no means the target audience for this series; I don't like manga particularly and I'm 40 years old. I was simply bored and looking for a fun watch. And mostly, this was a fun watch. I liked how Yumeko was portrayed and I think she, and all the other characters, could have been way more over the top.

I didn't care much about the plot to be fair. And the sentimental bits I could have done without.

Sometimes it's just nice to watch something that requires zero thought. Plenty of serious stuff around to watch if I'm in the mood for it.

I went in expecting nothing. I left it having had some good laughs and sorta wondering what a second season could bring. Won't hold my breath for it but I'd watch it if I had a couple days off work.

By the way, just look at the writers' names to know it's Americanized. Not necessarily a bad thing. Ymmv.

Enjoyed watching this

I really enjoyed watching this show, in fact I binge watched it all within a day. I would really like for netflix to hurry up with the next series so I can watch more of it as soon as possible. Lots of twists and turns to lead up to the finale, there is a very much "mean girl" style hierarchy within the school which makes it exciting waiting for the hopeful downfall. I like Yumeko, she's fun, crazy and unpredictable, a fantastic actress for the role. However, the show could be set anywhere as there isn't much focus on the school aspect of it which makes it less of a "teen" show and more of a show for any appropriate age.

Don't trust 10/10 bias

Someone who gives something like this a 10/10 is just biased.

I'd rather recommend watching the Anime rather than checking this series out. Or, if you are interested in live-action adaptations, they already made a Japanese one, which is far better than whatever this was.

This doesn't deserve more than 7 at most, depending on your taste, but a 10? Even fans won't. When you already have the source material, how can you mess that up? Understandably, you might want to try something new, but at least try sticking true to the characters if you'll be using them.

Most reviewers have already mentioned what's wrong with the series, so I won't repeat them. I'll just say I wasted my time on this, so please try not to waste yours.

Omg Amazing!

At first after watching the trailer of this show, I was pretty sceptical about how this shows performance would come out but OMG were my thinkings so wrong. This show was immaculate it was incredible and It had that thrill seeking, tension bouncing all around, people rating it low clearly haven't seen a proper good show because compared to the anime, this was not sexualising teenagers and had the appropriate amount of adult/ children jokes and scenes. As i watched this I never expected to enjoy it so much as a person who was really intrigued by the anime but I did enjoy this live action way more.

Not a 10, but certainly not a 1 - fun to watch!

At one end of the critical spectrum I bet we have the anime faithful who feel betrayed in whatever capacity, and at the other I'll wager we have friends and families of the live action adaptation. I'm putting my money on Yumeko, since Ms. Martineau is clearly having a field day playing an unhinged gambler with a hidden feudal Japanese clan agenda. The rest of the cast is acting like they have an actual stake in this game, and the overall vibe is I daresay, delightfully mischievous, with a sprinkle of Sex Education (minus the good vibes). Plus, how can you go wrong with the message that the world is controlled by soulless cheats who run it like a roulette table with a hidden switch. Of course our true overlords are the tech idiot savants who are ruining the planet, but their avatars on this remake of Kakegurui will do.

Waiting for season 2.

Best series in a long time. Some holes to be sure. Missing some bits shown in previews. Refreshing to see a school based series that does not show classes or teachers. Many of the cast are over the top, campy and playing characters rather than being them. Truely, can't wait for season 2 - hope Netflix does not leave us hanging!

The series is clearly an adaptation with only a lite conection to the original material. Much like most book or comic to movie projects. Was not looking for a carbon copy so, it worked for me. Truly, liked it. Mirrored the powerful fantasy lives of the ultra wealthy. Has some of the disregard most not in that ultra wealthy club must live with.

The acting is super cringe!!

This is a much uneccessary adaption. The acting is super cringe and I have seen students' movies with much better acting. Mostly all the actors are over the age of enrolling in high school. The genderbend Suki character is uneccessary and the most cringy twist to this adaption. The writing for this character is subpar and the actor didn't do much better job in portraying the character. It comes off as a parody of a certain internet personality rather than a real person.

The plot doesn't focus much on games and twists which are the most exciting parts of Kakegurui. Instead, all the games scenes are portraying in a lackluster way while giving screen time for cringy dialog and more subpar acting.

Take a Bet on this show

I wasn't expecting much when I saw this on Netflix. It sounded like a fun premise so I decided to give it a chance and it turned out to be a pretty fun revenge fantasy show. It had its problems but most of these shows do. But the idea itself of a boarding school for the children of wealthy criminals, psychopaths and king makers that is ruled not by teachers or deans but by a students ability to gamble for real life stakes is an interesting enough concept and to be honest the show is at its best when it plays out the games between the main character and her current opponent. The show falters a bit with the personal stuff but it is necessary to move certain plots forward. All in all it won't win any awards but the show is worth the gamble.

A New Take on the Psychology of Gambling

First, I'd like to apologize in advance for any mistakes in my English, as it's not my first language.

As someone deeply immersed in the Kakegurui universe, from the manga to the anime and even the Japanese live-action. I approached BET with an open mind, knowing that adaptations are not direct copies but reinterpretations. This Canadian production preserved the characters and the core premise but reshaped the entire narrative. The result? A unique experience that is bound to divide opinions.

The cast delivers visceral performances, often exaggerated, something that aligns with Kakegurui's signature style, where theatrical absurdity is part of the essence. While some may find certain portrayals "cringe" if expecting complete faithfulness to the original, within the framework of this adaptation, the heightened emotions work well to convey the tension and psychological stakes of the games.

Unlike the Japanese live-action, BET opts for a visual style that balances luxury with psychological breakdowns. The dynamic editing, the use of subjective camera angles, and a carefully curated lighting scheme all intensify the instability, pulling the audience into the characters' mental whirlwind. If the goal was to explore the psychology behind risk and gambling, the visual direction achieves it masterfully.

The costumes offer a reinterpretation of the iconic outfits, making them more adaptable for a Western audience without completely abandoning the extravagance that defines the original work. While some fans might struggle with the changes, they help contextualize this version within its own universe.

Not everything lands perfectly. The gamble involving Suki, for instance, felt empty, lacking the impact it needed, and could have been developed better to heighten the tension. Additionally, Ryan's characterization was frustrating. In Kakegurui, Ryota may have disagreed with Yumeko but ultimately supported her. In BET, however, Ryan continuously holds Yumeko back, preventing her from taking risks, which goes against her very essence as a character driven by emotion and thrill-seeking.

It's crucial to remember that an adaptation is not a direct translation. BET took Kakegurui's foundation, the characters, the obsession with gambling, the psychological battles, and transposed it into a new reality with a different approach. Those expecting an identical recreation of the original material might feel disappointed. But for those who understand the intention and allow themselves to embrace this new vision, there is plenty to appreciate.

In the end, I truly enjoyed what the director aimed to convey. Instead of merely copying Kakegurui, they sought to reinterpret it through a fresh lens. And successful adaptations are those bold enough to reinvent themselves.

We enjoy it, lower your expectations

The Netflix series Bet, starring Miku Martineau as Yumeko, is surprisingly easy to watch if you don't take it too seriously. While it's clearly aimed at younger audiences with its high school gambling drama and over-the-top style, as an old millennial, I have to admit my wife and I enjoyed it together. The show follows Yumeko, a mysterious pro gambler with a shadowy past, as she shakes up the social hierarchy at the elite St. Dominic's Prep through high-stakes bets and a quest for revenge.

Though it's based on the popular manga Kakegurui, Bet takes a fresh, audacious approach that balances teen drama with suspense and quirky characters. The gambling games and school politics are engaging, even if some plot points feel repetitive or exaggerated. Overall, it's a fun, light watch that works well for younger viewers but can also entertain adults looking for something easygoing.

Horrible adaptation of the anime/manga

They've spent more money and time on the music instead of the actual series/storytelling.

All of the actors are either race-swapped or clueless.

At one point, it seems like you're watching iCarly, or something else that's supposed to remind you of teen drama/love story.

The entire show got something that's called 'Netflixed' when it comes to the cast.

I'm not even going to waste time explaining how they're trying to talk to the audience - it comes off like they're targeting brain-fried kids/teenagers from TikTok.

Costumes, preps, or even CGI were horrible.

The best part of the entire show, when it comes to CGI, was the intro.

Yet another miserable, low-effort attempt to adapt something that was once decent, and it completely fell flat.

If this series is getting positive reviews, it's a clear sign that popular taste-and society-are collapsing, thanks to people like that.

Unpopular Opinion

It isn't actually that bad if you stop comparing it to the anime. The plot is good and the charcters are designed to portray their personalities that follow the plot. The aesthetics of the series were also not so bad. I liked that they made the student council stand out with the black suits as well.

We can all agree to disagree that this series would have been better on its own though. But lets remember that it is BASED on Kagegurui, it is not meant to be accurate.

Miku did a great job portraying Yumeko and the rest of the actors did their best. A reminder to be kind to the actors as it is not their fault for being casted.

Somebody get these teenagers a textbook.

Background information: The 2025 tv series "Bet" is based off of Kakegurui, which has been iterated through a manga called "Kakegurui - Compulsive Gambler" and THREE different tv shows titled "Kakegurui" in which 2 are live action and 1 an anime. To be honest this show's creation is indisputably unnecessary. Why are there five iterations of this one concept? Along with that you may be asking "why was it even shot in Canada?" The answer to that would be, money. I would assume it is simply more profitable to produce the picture as english speaking because it appeals to a broad audience, it simply wouldn't earn a large amount of money if it wasn't. And without the aspect of it being an anime it's a (mystery and psychological) teen drama. And I can only assume for Netflix, a non- indie film company, the goal is not purely accuracy or enjoyment. I'll be honest, I've never seen any of the previous adaptations, and I went into this show completely blind. No trailers, no description. Just vibes. And surprisingly, I didn't hate it.

Synopsis: The tv show "Bet" follows Yumeko, a sharp-witted teenage girl born in Japan, who finds herself drawn into a ruthless world where gambling rules all. After being expelled from traditional school, she enrolls at the elite and infamous St. Dominic's Academy, a school where power, hierarchy, and survival are dictated by high-stakes bets. It's also the same school her parents once attended... before they were killed in a mysterious car explosion when Yumeko was just six. As secrets unravel, Yumeko sets her sights on a single goal: to uncover the truth behind her parents' death and take down the alumni who orchestrated it.

Things that work for me: Cinematography & editing: I'll admit that the first episode I was so tempted to stop watching entirely. For me, the world was too abrasive and there wasn't much to settle the absurdity of how dramatic it was. However, this is when the camera style really pulled in. It made me feel like they were honing into the absurdity of the overly dramatic outlook, aware of it, and wanted to make it a part of their style. It was reminiscent of Scott Pilgrim, where the intensity was intentionally playful and over-the-top.

Story driven: (Psychological) Teen drama handled with care? Impossible. This show actually does a great job at sticking to the central plot while having a bit of fun. In the tragedy of having dead parents and trying to avenge them, Yumeko encourages fun but not distraction, this can be seen in the risky ways she plays her games and the flirtation that she possesses. It strikes as a coping mechanism while she deals with the harder parts of her life.

Social dilemma: Especially now, the world is kind of at odds with the people that hold power to it. Meaning that Gen Z in first world countries are starting to live and see the outcome of corruption of the 1%. This makes the social dilemma in the show relevant to what we are currently witnessing in the news.

Humor: In my opinion the humor was absurd in a good way, at times, way too jarring and forced, other times just enough to laugh. "Play with my hairy balls!" - Rex on "Bet" (ep4) Romance: The romance in this show depicted more than teen hormones, lust, and drama. The relationship between Ryan and Yumeko is built off of a deep understanding that comes with having a dead parent. (Other than Ryan's pitifully displayed attraction.) Which, compared to the usual teen drama standards, often ethically or legally questionable, is a relief.

Things that don't work for me: Bitcoin? Really? It felt like a missed opportunity for the writers to invent a more original in-universe currency, especially in a world that leans so hard into stylization and dramatics.

Strip poker scene: The strip poker scene felt problematic given Yumeko's age.

Wardrobe: I don't like it.

Cast: I've read the reviews, some say that 1) the cast is too old, and 2) even more say the acting is poor. To dispute the claim that the actors are too old, I would say point 1: age isn't always relevant. As an 18-year-old myself, I can say they don't look far off from their characters' age. The oldest of the cast that plays a teenager is Mary's character who was born in 1999, still she looks the youngest of the cast. And the main actress was born in 2004 so, at the time of filming or casting she could have very well been a teen. And point 2: I wouldn't describe the acting as poor, but perhaps a bit raw. From episode 1 to episode 10 the acting vastly improves, and I would expect the same as the show continues.

In addition, a big argument is "why are they race swapped?" Given that the show was filmed in Canada, the diverse casting makes sense to reflect the local population and the multicultural reality there, rather than aiming for an all-Asian cast.

Things that could be better: Humor: Can be too exaggerated and forced.

Acting: There is room for improvement.

Romance: The side character's romances are strange and go almost unexplained.

Games: The games could be longer to build tension.

Dialogue: Not quite natural.

Conclusion: Had I read the reviews beforehand, I probably wouldn't have watched this show, and I'm glad I didn't (read the reviews). The harsh ratings feel disproportionate. Bet isn't a 10, but it's definitely not a 1. It's not a masterpiece, but it doesn't need to be. Sometimes, shows exist simply to entertain, to distract, and to let us breathe for a while. And in that sense, Bet delivers: flawed, absurd, and unexpectedly sincere. Although this show does a great job at developing current social dilemmas, it's a social dilemma in itself. Is it ethical to make a series like this? The show is making cultural transitions that feel somewhat exploited in my book, meaning this show was just made for profit and that's the only reason why they made so many cultural changes. I also want to add really quickly that in today's day and age, actors have a hard time getting jobs and it says a lot about the industry in itself, the fact that adaptations like this sometimes damage actors careers when all they attempt to do is be a part of a world that they are truly passionate about. That in no way should reflect the ultimate performance of this show. I think there is room for improvement in acting, but every actor I would say fit a mold that was impossible for them to fit. And to me that's a big kudos.

If I could give it a 6.9, I would. But since IMDb doesn't allow decimals, I'm rounding up to 7.

Additional note to fans of the original series: I respect your loyalty to the original adaptation. It shows that you really care about the perception of the show in your community.

Also as you can tell from my review, it's a misconception that this show is American, the directors of Bet are Canadian.

I didn't like the acting, and some other things

I honestly couldn't get into this show at all. The acting was incredibly bad it felt like the casting director just picked random people off the street. The performances were awkward and over the top (FORCEDD). It gave off serious amateur short film vibes (acting wise) Even though it's an anime adaptation, there's still a way to bring characters to life naturally something this show and actors completely missed. Every scene felt forced and unnatural, like no one involved understood the tone they were aiming for.

It's not just the acting, though. The overall production the script, direction, pacing all fell flat. Nothing pulled me in. This was just a frustrating watch from start to finish. Dont make a season 2.

Please, Netflix-let us go back. We're not done yet. " Bet"

"Bet" is a rare gem-quietly powerful, emotionally rich, and impossible to forget.

Each frame feels intentional, each silence meaningful. The storytelling doesn't just unfold-it lingers, it haunts, and it stays with you.

The cast? Remarkable. Every actor brought nuance and soul to their roles, turning even the smallest scenes into moments of truth. Clara Alexandrova and Miko Martino especially held the screen with such quiet gravity-I'm still thinking about Kira and Yumiko long after the credits rolled.

We need more. More layers to unfold, more character arcs to grow, more answers to the questions left aching in the air. What becomes of Michael's path? Will Dory find her voice? Can Riri heal?

Bet is not just a series-it's a world. One that deserves to be continued, explored, and lived in.

Please, Netflix-let us go back. We're not done yet.

Sloppification at its finest.

Netflix needs to stop producing anime adaptations or "inspired" stories that essentially ruin the original material. The writers often lack the skill to create something original, relying on the manga's name as a shield against criticism or as an excuse to draw in fans. I don't understand why every show feels compelled to include romance.

Anyone who gives it a 10 is delusional, lacking any critical judgment and blindly consuming whatever a multi-billion-dollar company produces. The money would have been better spent creating a new season than attempting to retell a story that works better as an anime.

This show tries to be more of a soap opera than a series focused on gambling and engaging games that are fun to watch.
