The Exalted

With Lou-Ye-ian, shaky handheld camera work, a hybrid emotion of unease and confusion is brilliantly conveyed, with some carefully scouted and beautifully set up scenes to spice things up.

Unfortunately, it is a challenge to figure out what the film is all about underneath its beautiful and stylised shell. It's a melodrama that doesn't have much to say, and it looks like it's trying to highlight some trendy issues, but it doesn't even come close, so it ends up being a slapdash.

The film presents a sort of bourgeois image of delicacy and hypocrisy - but obviously not what the director wanted to shed lights on.
